USER MANUAL Rev 1.6
Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm System or “BNWAS” systems have been a class requirement on one
man operated vessels (often referred to as “One Watch Bridges”) for a number of years now.
The importance of ensuring that the Officer on Watch (OOW) active on the bridge is both alert and
competent to carry out their duties is paramount. This has been recognised by the International
Maritime Organisation (IMO) and BNWAS will become mandatory for the majority of commercial sea
going vessels.
The timescale is dependent on size of vessel and whether it is intended to carry passengers:
• All new build vessels ≥ 150gt plus all new passenger vessels built on or after 1st July 2011
• All Cargo Vessels ≥ 3000gt by 1st July 2012 plus all existing passenger vessels
3 selectable Modes:
Operational Sequence:
• The system displays on each standard reset module a visual countdown to action. This is
configurable over a range of 3min to 12mins (Td).
• At the end of the Td both bridge wing and standard bridge mount resets present a visual,
flashing indication warning the OOW that action is required.
• If not reset after 15seconds the WatchKeeper activates the 1st Stage Bridge Audible Alarm
along with the visual alarm to act as a final prompt for action
• If not reset the Second Stage Alarm is then activated in user selectable zone(s)

USER MANUAL Rev 1.6
When communicating at high data rates or over long distances differential data transmission offers
superior performance in most applications. Differential signals can help nullify the effects of ground
shifts and induced noise signals that can appear as common mode voltages on a network. The RS-
485 specification meets the requirements for a multi-point communications network. The maximum
range of the WatchKeeper RS485 communication path is 300m.
The optional WatchKeeper modules utilize a 2.4GHz RF network to transmit and receive critical data
to support the BNWAS functions. The system operates as a mesh network with wireless nodes that
are capable of direct communication with its immediate neighbour. This results in a failure tolerant
system whereby messages are automatically re-routed to the intended target. All modules have a
range of approximately 30m and the ability to repeat signals to a neighbouring device. The
installation process is assisted through the use of the Net-Logic “Range Finder” assisting the
installation engineer to determine the ideal location of each individual unit. The Repeater Module
can be used to relay the signal to modules out of range of the transmitting device.

3.0 INSTALLATION
This section details the installation process and covers mounting options and connectivity of each
unit.
Module Installation should be carried out by a fully trained technician/ engineer noting the following
installation criteria:
• All reset modules shall only be installed in positions on the bridge giving proper look out
• Audible Alarm modules shall be installed in locations whereby the audible output power
is not impaired
• RF modules should be positioned in locations without structural obstructions and where
practical at minimum height 1.2m from the floor
• It is advised that the WatchKeeper wired elements are installed first followed by the RF
modules
• For approved usage of the RF modules it is stated that a third stage Audible Alarm
module is wired into the system
The Alarm Interface unit is designed to be installed within the bridge console and has 4 mounting
points. Details of these points can be viewed in section 7 of this document.

Correct installation of the RF modules is essential to obtain correct functionality and should only be
carried out by qualified installation engineers. The RF signal path should be identified through a
preliminary site survey of the vessel prior to installation.
The desired signal path is to have repeater locations along corridors and down stairwells. This
removes the need for the RF signal to be passed through main structural elements of the vessel.
The cover the distance between the bridge and crew mess it is not always possible to obtain a direct
wireless solution. To overcome this, RF repeater modules can be mounted in-between destination
points.
Starting from the bridge [point 1] the recommended path can be seen to transmit signal to the crew
mess [Point 5].
The AIU and all optional RF modules utilise the pre-configured security key system to ensure data
transferred cannot be accessed by unauthorised individuals and systems using the same/ similar
technologies within the system.
An encrypted router or coordinator is configured to allow secured joins only; the key will never be
transmitted over the air. For the WatchKeeper system each node in the network is pre-configured
with the encryption key. Encryption keys cannot be read via the serial port; they are write-only.

The AIU requires power from the vessels main battery back-up 24Vdc supply or the primary 24Vdc
and a reserve 24VDC battery backup supply input ensuring the system is able to function fully in the
event of power failure on board the vessel. Dual input 24Vdc configuration should be connected as
shown below:
Please note in-line fuse recommended for installation of AIU module into the vessels 24VDC supply.

The General Purpose Contact Closure input allows for the connection of equipment capable of
registering physical activity and mental alertness by the OOW. This function can be further extended
by parallel connection of the inputs into these ports.
Contact Closure 2 is linked to the change-over relay governing the main power and the reserve
power inputs. As described in the event of a main 24VDC input failure the system will automatically
switch over to reserve input and trigger CC2 to indicate the fault.
Contact Closure 4 is used in the transfer of unacknowledged alarms from systems on the bridge
capable of generating this output via contact closure.

A System Error warning message appears if either a communication error has been detected or a
module loses power. This message is shown in the info panel of the main reset screen. If a
communication error occurs between the AIU and the MCU the screen enters failure mode. In Event
of Main power loss the Battery icon is displayed to indicate reserve power.

In the event of a system error the WatchKeeper through the AIU module is able to repeat the
System Error malfunction indication to central alarm panel(s) if available. Section 3.6 of this manual
details this output.
In the event of a system error the AIU shall illuminate a system error LED for indication a fault has
occurred. This LED shall immediately return to default state when error is cleared.

The watchdog timer built into the WatchKeeper is a software timer that triggers software reset if the
main program suffers a hang and finds itself in an unresponsive state. This reset will bring the
system back to its original working state.
In answer to the heartbeat, every minute, from the AIU, the Sounder replies with it current state
with regards to Power Status. The AIU relays this information to the MCU which displays a Battery
ICON when any unit is on battery power as shown below.
The fault will also be reported through the ALR string output of the AIU module as below:
$BNALR,000,A,V,B1=02,B2=a
The string example denotes audible alarm (Node A) has switched to battery backup.
The minimum voltage required for normal operation per module is governed by the worst case
component. This Audible Alarm module requires 2.8VDC minimum for the Xbee module to function.
The battery output is fed directly into a linear regulator IC which drops 100mV with a 100mA current
draw. The Audible Alarm module has a maximum current draw of 108mA and so the output
required from the battery is 2.8 VDC + 0.1VDC = 2.9VDC.

The Reset Module including bridgewing reset and RF repeater has an integrated Buck-Boost feature
which requires 2.7VDC to generate the required 3.3VDC for normal function.
The audible alarm module has Status and Power LED indication on the front panel. The function is
described below:
The status of each RF module and Power supply is shown clearly on the front of each unit as
described below:
RF Reset modules status:
• No communication - Amber LED / Solid Blue Switch LED
• Communication - Countdown sequence (normal
Operation) / no illumination
Modules status:
• No communication – Red LED
• Communication – Green LED
Power status:
• Main Power – Green LED
• Battery Back Up supply – Red LED
