Chapter 5.1
NORMAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS
(Introduction to Normal Distributions and the Standard Normal Distribution)

PROPERTIES OF ANORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Try it yourself #1.

Consider the normal curves shown at the right. Which normal curve has the greatest
mean? Which normal curve has the greatest standard deviation?

1. Find the location of the line of symmetry of each curve. Make a conclusion about
which mean is greatest.
The line of symmetry of curve A occurs at x = 45. The line of symmetry of
curve B occurs at x = 60. The line of symmetry of curve C occurs at x = 45. So,
curve A has a greater mean.

2. Determine which normal curve is more spread out. Make a conclusion about
which standard deviation is greatest.
Curve C is more spread out than curve A and Curve B. So, curve C has a
greater standard deviation.
Try it yourself #2.
The scaled test scores for the New York State Grade 8 English Language Arts Test are
normally distributed. The normal curve shown below represents this distribution. What
is the mean test score? Estimate the standard deviation of this normal distribution.

1. Find the line of symmetry and identify the mean.

Because a normal curve is symmetric about the mean, it estimate that μ =
660

2. Estimate the inflection points and identify the standard deviation.

Because the inflection points are one standards deviation from the mean,
you can statement that o = 35
Try it yourself #3.
1. Find the cumulative area that corresponds to a z-score of -2.19.
The cumulative area that corresponds to a z = -2.19 is 0.0142

2. Find the cumulative area that corresponds to a z-score of 2.17. Locate the given
z-score and find the area that corresponds to it in the Standard Normal Table.
The cumulative area that corresponds to a z = 2.17 is 0.9849
Try it yourself #4.
Find the area under the standard normal curve to the left of z = 2.13.
1. Draw the standard normal curve and shade the area under the curve and to the
left of z = 2.13.

2. Use the Standard Normal Table to find the area that corresponds to z = 2.13.
The cumulative area that corresponds to a z = 2.13 is 0.9834
Try it yourself #5.
Find the area under the standard normal curve to the right of z = -2.16.
1. Draw the standard normal curve and shade the area below the curve and to the
right of z = -2.16

2. Use the Standard Normal Table to find the area to the left of z = -2.16.
The cumulative area that corresponds to a z = -2.16 is 0.0153

3. Subtract the area from 1.

z = -2.16 is Area = 1 – 0.0153 = 0.9847
Try it yourself #6.
Find the area under the standard normal curve between z = -2.165 and z = -1.35.
1. Use the Standard Normal Table to find the area to the left of z = -1.35.
The cumulative area that corresponds to a z = -1.35 is 0.0885

2. Use the Standard Normal Table to find the area to the left of z = -2.165.
The cumulative area that corresponds to a z = -2.165 is 0.0151

3. Subtract the smaller area from the larger area.

= 0.0885 – 0.0151
= 0.0734
4. Interpret the results.
So, 7.34% of the area under the curve falls between z = -2.165 and z = -1.35
