TYPES OF ACCOMMODATION

1. Accommodations in the Organised Sector

a)Five star Deluxe Hotels(International Hotels):

These hotels are modern western style hotels located in almost all metropolitan and other large
cities as well as at principal tourist destinations. Usually, they are located at a prime location in
the city.

These hotels are luxury hotels and are classified based on an internationally accepted system of
Classification grading and international level of services. There categories range from atleast
Five star grade depending upon the facilities and Services provided by these hotels. In addition
to accommodation various other facilities are provided To make the stay more comfortable.
These facilities include – information counters, banquet halls, Conference facilities, a number of
shops, travel agency desk, business centre facilities, money Changing and safe deposit facilities,
theme restaurants, beverages, swimming pool, gymnasium, health Clubs and other
entertainment programmes in the form of games, music and dance, etc.

Price of the room varies depending on the category of hotel. The facilities available also affect
the Pricing. Usually the clientele is business executives and up budget tourists. To name a few are
Hilton, Marriott, Taj, etc.

b) First class Hotels/ A class Hotel: The fulltime hotels with grading at least Three star are known
as First class Hotels. This is the full service hotel – A dependable hotel with a full range of services,
amenities and facilities, comfortable public areas, many with meeting space –
Accommodations suitable for all travelers, may have workspaces or all-suite options.

c) Commercial Hotels:

These hotels are located near the business or commercial centres of the city and have easy
access to Transportation. They provide accommodation, parking space for guests and their
visitors, restaurants and sometimes business centre facilities as well.

Size of such a hotel varies from small to medium. The rooms of these hotels are priced lower than
International hotels. To name a few in Agra city are Holiday inn, PL Palace, Lemon tree, etc.

e) Apartment Hotels/Residential Hotels:

These hotels can be described as an apartment house complete with hotel services. These
hotels are largely located in big cities and they mostly operate under the European Plans where
no meals are provided to the guests. These Accommodations are suitable for people who must
stay far from their homes or permanent residence for a long time on monthly rent basis or daily
rent basis.

The concept of residential hotels started in America where people found that permanent living
in hotel offers many advantages. These are very popular in United States and Europe.

d) Resort Hotels: A resort hotel is one which is visited by holiday maker or tourists for relaxation,
recreation and/or for entertainment. Resort hotels cater to tourists and are located near place
of some scenic beauty, i.e., the sea, mountains or in ‘off the beaten track destination’. These
days, resorts are also found in wildlife sanctuaries or national parks.

The primary reason, for visiting a resort is rest and relaxation and these hotels are built with the
objective of indoor recreation activities giving visitors special welcome and atmosphere of
informality. The services and amenities offered by resorts include swimming pool, tennis court,
skiing, boating, Surfing and many others. The clientele of resort hotels is mostly persons with
considerable income Looking for relaxation and recreation.

Resorts can be of various types and can be classified on the basis of climate and topography.
Broadly, they fall in the following categories:

i) Summer Resorts,

ii) Winter Resorts,

iii) All Seasons Resorts,

iv) Hill Resorts

v) Health Resorts.

f) Floating Hotels: As the name suggests, these hotels are located on the surface of the water. It
may be on seawater or river water or even on a lake. These hotels provide all the facilities and
services of a hotel and are very popular with the tourists. In many cases, across the world old
ships have been converted into these types of hotels and have become popular among the
tourists.

The size and price depend upon the hotels. Sometimes they are part of a hotel chain or they
can be owned by individuals as in case of the houseboats in Kashmir.

g) Heritage Hotels: Heritage Hotels are old monuments and palaces that are converted into
Hotels that provide guests with royal and luxurious experiences. Heritage Hotels covers
palaces/monuments/old Havelis/ Hunting lodges and residences built before 1950.

2. Accommodations in the unorganised sectors

a)Motels:Motels are the accommodations located mainly on highways and major roadways
with parking facility. They generally have only one or two floors while hotels may be high-rise.
Motels will also generally have less features and more limited food and beverage offerings.
There’ll be fewer staff and a smaller number of specialised staff.

b) Youth Hostels: A place where people, especially young people, can stay cheaply for short
periods when they are travelling for leisure and educational purposes. Rooms can be available
at individual, twinning, and even beds in dormitory rooms. These are not profit Organisations.

c) Campaign Sites: Campaign sites are usually found in open spaces far from the hustle and
bustle of cities. These are the type of accommodations that can be found at holiday
destinations. The space provided is usually sufficient for tent pitching, parking, water and
sanitation facilities. These sites are more eco friendly as they do minimum damage to the space
and landscapes due to temporary stay. It also requires less investment in setting up such sites.

d) Airport/ Railway Retiring Rooms: Railways Retiring Rooms are rooms which are available on
Railway Stations across India, They are available in Single, Double and Dormitory type of
occupancy with AC and Non AC combination. The main purpose for establishing retiring rooms
at railway stations and airports is to provide staying facilities to travellers who do not wish to go to
inner city because they have interconnecting Trains or flights from a particular destinations. This is
excellent option to take a halt and stay while travelling through train or flight.

e) Lodges and Tourist Bungalows: Lodges are accommodations typically located in more rural or
wilderness areas, typically near national parks or ski resorts. They offer a range of room options
and often feature outdoor activities such as hiking or skiing. These lodges are mostly used by
budget or middle class tourists at the destinations.

State tourism and tourism departments also provide facilities such as rest houses in scenic
locations and near by to less popular destinations which are known as Tourist Bungalows.

f) Bed & Breakfast establishments(B&B): B & B are smaller establishments that offer a more
personalized and homey experience. They typically offer a few guest rooms, frequently with a
shared bathroom, and provide guests with a breakfast meal included in the price of their stay.
Bed & Breakfast are typically located in residential areas or historic buildings Catering to the
needs of en-route travellers.

g) Tourist Holiday villages and Homestays: Tourist villages are accommodations located in
remote locations, far from cities, making cultural and natural offerings to the tourists. These are
close to nature where a tourist gets experience of farming, cattle feeding and villagers lifestyles.
Primarily these villages are managed by social groups, NGOs and tourist organisations.
Homestays are the accommodations where a tourist resides with a local family and eats from
the same kitchen.
