Quiz-8: Solutions
Question #1
• Consider the circuit of Figure 1. The transistor in the circuit
operates in saturation mode at ID = I and |VGS| = |VDS| = 3 V. Also
|Vt| = 1 V. (Neglect the effect of λ).
• Find the output voltage V1.
• If |Vt| = 1 V and I = 2 mA , find the largest resistor that an be
inserted in series with drain while maintaining saturation.
• What is the largest resistor that can be placed in series with gate?
• If the current source I requires at least 2 V between its terminals to
operate properly, what is the largest resistor that can be placed in
series with MOSFET source while ensuring saturation-mode
operation of the transistor at ID = I ?.
[10 marks]
Figure 1
Solution:

a) 𝑉1 = 𝑉𝐷𝑆 = 3V [2 marks]

b) In order to calculate 𝑅𝑚𝑎𝑥 that can be inserted in series with the drain, 𝑉𝐷𝑆 has to be equal to 𝑉𝐺𝑆 − 𝑉𝑡 , so that the
device is operating on the edge of saturation :
|𝑉𝐷𝑆 | = 3 - 1 = 2V.

Note that since 𝑖𝐷 is the same, 𝑉𝐺𝑆 stays the same.

3−2 𝑉
𝑅𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑥 = = 0.5 kΩ [3 marks]
2 𝑚𝐴

c) In order to calculate the largest resistor added to the gate, note that since the gate doesn’t draw any current, the value
of resistor is immaterial. [2 marks]

d) Now we calculate 𝑅𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑥 assuming that the voltage drop across the current source is at least 2V.

𝑉1 = 8V, the 𝑉𝐺𝑆 = 3V ⇒ 𝑉𝑆 = 8 - 3 = 5V

5𝑉
𝑅𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 2 𝑚𝐴 = 2.5 kΩ [3 marks]
Question #2
• In the circuit shown in Figure 2, both the transistors
are characterized by |Vt| = 2 V, k′W/L = 1 mA/V2,
and λ= 0.
• a) Find the voltages V1 and V2.
• b) Replace the current source with a resistor in the
circuit. Select the resistor value that yield a current
as close to that of the current source as possible.
Find new values of V1 and V2. [10 marks]

Figure 2
Solution:

Refer to Figure 1.

The MOSFETs are in saturation as 𝑉𝐷𝑆 ≤ 𝑉𝐺𝑆 − 𝑉𝑡 . Therefore we have

1 𝑊
𝐼𝐷 = 𝑘′ (𝑉𝐺𝑆 −𝑉𝑡 )2
[2 marks]
2 𝐿

In the circuit, we have drain current, 𝐼𝐷 = 2mA and 𝑉𝑡 = -2V. [2 marks]

⇒ 𝑉𝐺𝑆 = -4V (𝑉𝐺𝑆 cannot be 0V as MOSFET will be in cutoff in this case).
⇒ 𝑉1 = 6V
⇒ 𝑉2 = 𝑉1 - 4V = 2V [3 marks]

If we replace the current source with a resistor in the circuit :

2𝑉
R = 2 𝑚𝐴 = 1 kΩ so 𝑉2 is still 2V, and 𝑉1 = 6V . [3 marks]
Question #3
• Calculate the small signal gain vo/vi of the circuit in Figure 3(a) in terms of RL,
gm1, and gm2. Assume that both of the MOSFETS are operating in the
saturation region, and that the small-signal models of the MOSFETS are as
shown in Figure 3(b).
Figure 3

[10 marks]
Solution: Current through MOSFET M1 is given by
𝑖𝐷1 = 𝑔𝑚1 𝑣𝑔𝑠1 = 𝑔𝑚1 𝑣𝑖
[2 marks]
Current through MOSFET M2 is given by
𝑖𝐷2 = 𝑔𝑚2 𝑣𝑔𝑠2 ≈ −𝑔𝑚2 𝑣0 [2 marks]

The approximation can be made because current flowing into gate is nearly zero .

In the circuit we that

𝑖𝐷1 = 𝑖𝐷2
⇒ 𝑔𝑚1 𝑣𝑖 = −𝑔𝑚2 𝑣0 [2 marks]
Hence, we have
𝑣𝑜 𝑔𝑚1
⇒ =− [4 marks]
𝑣𝑖 𝑔𝑚2
