Tittle: Authentic Materials to Foster Writing Skills in College EFL Learner

Introduction
Writing is one of the most important communicative skills in learning English. Cited
from Yulianti, (2019)most people believe learning English is hard, especially in writing. Writing
has become frequently studied skills. According to Yulianti, (2019) writing is a process to create
some ideas of students’ knowledge to be a written. Writing is the ability to express idea,
opinions, and feelings through written language. Al-Atabi, (2020.) also defined writing is the
activity of putting sentences together to form a text. Cited from Hasbullah, (2023) writing is an
interactive activity that involves reader’s imagination and texts. Moreover, students will easier to
imagine and think what they want to achieve. RahmtAllah, (2020) defined writing is the effective
communication of complex ideas in the purest form of words. According to Aryanika & Pd, (2021),
writing is a process of expressing ideas, thoughts, and feelings of the writer by using a
conventional system. Thus, the readers will understand about the message that been sent. It could
be concluded that writing was as important as other skill. The students needed to know how to
write and how to make a good sentence. Therefore, the reader could understand the massage or
the information of the written text. Then, writing can be used to communicate because it is from
thoughts, feelings, and opinions
In school, students learning about how to write a paragraph and essay because it is one of
the essential skills. According to Mostafa & Alghamdi, (2022)Writing is one of the most important
linguistic activities. Thus, writing can provide students with rich opportunities to express their
emotions and feelings. It can help the student getting ideas and experiences especially for the
future needs. Stated from Rahmt Allah, (2020) writing is the most important of the many skills
students need for the University. Furthermore, without the ability to write, it is difficult to
survive in a competitive learning environment where the university student will continue to
commit errors such as spelling and grammatical errors. For the example when the students have a
good writing so they have good meaning to develop interesting ideas and each sentence and
paragraph that are coherent so that it can be understood by the reader. After that, the use of rules
in writing such as word selection, use of grammar, use of punctuation and other rules must be
applied in a writing. So, it will help the students improve their knowledge and English skills,
especially in writing.
English as an international language has spoken by many students around the world and
become a hard language to learn. Cited from Saleem Khasawneh, (2021) students faced many
difficulties to learn English, such as the students are unable to comprehend and understand
written texts. According to Yulianti, (2019) most of students were difficult to find and others do
not have idea in writing. Moreover, they have lack of vocabularies. Writing is a skill that very
important to be learnt well. As the writer, she/he should know how to develop paragraph or text
into good composition. It includes the ideas, unity of paragraphs, sentence pattern, grammar,
correct punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, and capitalization Aryanika & Pd (2021).These are what
things that must be focus by the students. However, Aryanika & Pd, (2021)stated that the problem
that occurs in writing is a problem caused by students. Some students are still not careful in
making writing, and also do not understand how to find ideas and develop an idea. The problem
also about problems in writing are grammatical problems, sentence structure problems, word
choice problems, and cognitive problems.
Teacher has a big role to teach and give materials for students. It is important for students
to generate their ideas. Authentic material can be an alternative way to help the learning process.
According to Chamba, (2019) there are two main qualities that make authentic material
appropriate for classroom use. One is the linguistic feature, since it represents the actual learning.
The other is the motivational factor which connects language learning’s means and objective. In
other words, the effective and interesting materials can boost student’s motivation and interest to
improve writing skills. Chamba, (2019) stated that authentic material has widely use to help
students learn about EFL. Moreover, it consists of many kinds so that teachers can use it to make
the learning process interesting. (Primadona & Prastiyowati, n.d.) cited that English as a foreign
language that is taught at school and the teacher must be able to choose and use appropriate
teaching material to support their teaching so that it will make the students more interested in
learning English.
In line with this, Fitrawati & Safitri, (2021) stated the main benefits of using authentic
material include an optimistic result on beginner enthusiasm, compromise acquaintance to
genuine language, narrate additional diligence to students’ desires and support a supplementary
ingenious tactics to teach. Providing interesting and authentic materials for language teaching is
not a big problem anymore Sundana, (2017). Thus, the teachers can find the necessary material
for teaching everywhere and every time through the internet, newspapers, and magazine. Cited
from (Setyowati & Sukmawan, 2019) authentic material really gives a big impact to give the
students motivations while learning and studying language. Moreover, it is interesting and
motivating if used in the classroom. It is like bringing the real world. Authentic materials prepare
students to face the real world outside the classroom. It is motivating for the students because it
provides real language, real culture and a variety of genre used by the professional community
into the classroom. Look at the example, if the teacher used authentic material for improving
writing skills, they can use many kinds of it, they can use movie, podcasts, poems, or even songs.
The students will find many words that they did not know yet, so it can help them to get more
vocabularies.
As a teacher, teaching writing is not easy and we need to find a strategy that suitable for
students. According to Velasco, (2021), authentic materials in the ESL classroom can also help
students become more critical in their approach to reading. So that, it can make the students
easier to understand about the material. Especially nowadays, the students must to understand
about how to use technology. Authentic materials have many types that can help the students
learn English more interesting. Cited from Setyowati & Sukmawan (2019) basically there are two
broad categories of authentic materials for teaching writing, namely the printed materials and the
web-based materials. The printed materials may in the form of printed magazines, printed
newspaper, printed itinerary, invitation, letters, printed literary works such as collection of short
stories, novels, poems, and play, and other printed texts or documents. The second type of
authentic materials is the digital one or the web-based materials, such as pictures, YouTube,
movie clips, electronic books, novels, short stories, poems, and web-based application. For the
example, the students will read a novel and then they will make a summary and review about the
intrinsic also extrinsic of the book. It can help them to improve their writing skill by that
assignment.
Nowadays, how teacher teach the students really give a big impact for learning process.
Teachers are responsible of what happens in the classroom such as what is taught, the resources
used, the type and order of activities, classroom management, assessment, feedback, correction,
and many more. So that, teachers must to have an ability to choose what material that suitable for
the students. According to Primadona & Prastiyowati (2018) , authentic learning material and
activities are designed to imitate the real-world situations. Moreover, authentic material as a
printed material which is used in the classroom in the same way they would be used in real life.
In conclusion, authentic materials are the material that can exposed the students to the real
language. Setyowati & Sukmawan (2019) cited that it can be from anything that we can found
around the class. For the example, video, novel, etc. Authentic material is related to how the
students improve their English skills, especially writing skills. It is not just giving the
motivations but it can help them to find many vocabularies and experience in writing. So, they
will be well prepared to write paper in the future.
