INTRODUCTION
All living organisms show remarkable changes in their size,
weight and volume during their lifespan this is called growth.
It is the fundamental property of all living organisms. The mere
increase in size of a plant or a plant part may not necessarily be
due to growth. For example, a flaccid cell when absorbs water
increases in size, dry seeds when soaked in water, imbibe and
certainly increase in volume and weight a leaf in a turgid
condition increases in its area. But this increase in area or
volume cannot be considered as growth as the removal of water
will reduce their volumes or sizes. Growth is defined as a
permanent and irreversible change in the volume or size or
form of an organism accompanied by an increase in its dry
weight.

The growth and development are interlinked and occur in a

well-coordinated manner. This growth and development, in all
organisms, is under control of chemical substances known as
hormones. So, hormones are also known as growth regulators.
They are synthesized and secreted at specific sites in very small
amounts and then are transported to various other parts of the
body where they show their effects. In plants, hormones are
secreted mainly at the root and shoot tips. There are mainly four
groups of hormones in plants: auxins, gibberellins, cytokines
and abscisic acid. They all control various functions of the plant
body.

There are various ways by which the rate of growth can be

measured. Any one of the following measures can be suitably
applied in determining the growth rate and total growth of an
individual organ of a plant or the whole plant:

5
1. Increase in weight.
2. Increase in volume.
3. Increase in height.
4. Increase in number of cells produced.

In the present project report, increase in the length s of radicle

and plumule is taken as a parameter to measure growth. The
effects of quality of light have been studied on the growth of
gram seeds.
