The Wives
Prophet S married around 13 women, with the permission and consent of
Allah. The marriages were restricted in the 8th year of Hijrat with this verse;
“Marry women of your choice, two, three or four….”. After this revelation,
Prophet S did not contract any marriage.
The possible reason to marry so many women would be; as most of them were
helpless in the society, dejected, widows or divorcee, elderly, out of the
religion etc.
To set an example for the Muslim men, that they should not only look for
matrimony the young maiden girls, rather, they can marry all the above
mentioned categories.
1. Hazrat Khadija RA
2. Hazrat Sawdah RA
3. Hazrat Aisha RA
4. Hazrat Hafsah RA
5. Hazrat Zainab bint Khuzaima RA
6. Hazrat Umm e Salamah RA
7. Hazrat Zainab bint Jahash RA
8. Hazrat Jawairiah bint Harith RA
9. Hazrat Umm e Habibah RA
10. Hazrat Safiyah RA
11.Hazrat Rehana RA
12. Hazrat Maimoonah bint Harith RA
13. Hazrat Maria Qibtiya RA
These are the names of all the wives of Prophet S, and also known as Ummhat
ul Momineen (Mothers of the faithful).

1. Hazrat Khadija RA bint Khawlid:


• Prophet’s S first wife
• The only wife of the Prophet S until she died
• Mother of the only surviving children of the Prophet S
• Helped Prophet S most in his early years
• 15 years elder than the Prophet S
• Before marrying the Prophet S, she had been married twice and
widowed
• Was a renowned female trader of her times

• Hired Prophet S for a trade trip to Syria after hearing accounts of his
trustworthiness
• Her slave, who accompanied the Prophet on the trip, told her how well
he had handled the affairs
• In 595 A.D she sent a marriage proposal to the Prophet S
• It was accepted on the Prophet’s behalf by his uncle
• She gave the Prophet S moral and financial support, which alleviated
many of his worries
• They lived together for 25 years, and had six children, 4 daughters and
2 sons who died in infancy
• She comforted and reassured the Prophet S after he came home with his
heart beating severely after receiving the first revelation
• She took him to her cousin and Christian scholar, Warqah Bin Naufil
• Was the 1st person and 1st woman to accept Islam and learn how to pray
• Remained with the Prophet S throughout and suffered persecution with
him
• Spent her wealth in the way of Islam; died at the age of sixty five
• She was buried in Makkah. The Prophet S has said, “The noblest
women of the world are Maryam AS and Khadijah RA”

2. Hazrat Sawdah RA bint Zama’a:


• 2nd wife of the Prophet S - Married in 620 A.D
• Married the Prophet S few months after Hazrat Khadija’s death
• She was 30 years old and the Prophet S was 50
• She was a widow and amongst the early converts to Islam
• She had migrated to Abyssinia along with her husband
• Took care of the Prophet S and his children
• Migrated to Madinah once her apartment had been built over there
• Was very punctual about prayers
• Wholeheartedly welcomed the new wives of the Prophet
• Did not even perform the Umrah after the Prophet’s directive to not
leave the house
• Narrated 5 traditions. Died in 23 AH . Hazrat Aisha RA narrated,
“Sawdah gave up her turn to me (Aisha) and Prophet S used to give me
both my day and the day of Sawdah.”

3.Hazrat Aisha bint Abu Bakr RA:


 Amongst the most favorite wives of the Prophet S
 Daughter of Hazrat Abu Bakr RA
 Prophet S visited her house since her childhood
 She was 10, when the Prophet married her

 Their marriage was solemnized in Madinah
 Prophet S used to play games with her
 Held special place in Prophet’s S life
 Her beauty and lively character attracted him to her
 The hypocrites played a role in slander against her after she was seen
coming home from a fair with an unknown man; however verses of
Quran were revealed to prove her innocence (24:11-13)
 Prophet S has said, “Aisha enjoys superiority over all other women.”
 During his last days, the Prophet S requested to be shifted to her
apartment and even died in her lap
 She was 18 or 25 when the Prophet S left this world

 She lived quietly during the 1 two caliphates

 Showed disagreements over the policies of the 3 caliph, but opposed
killing him
 Fought the Battle of Camel against Hazrat Ali RA– which she lost and
was escorted back with privilege
 She freed many slaves
 Hazrat Umar RA kept for her double allowance in pensions for widows
 She was often sought by the leading Muslims and her approval was
considered important
 She narrated 2210 Ahadis and has a whole section on her name in
Hanbal’s Musnad
 Died in 58 AH and buried in Madinah. (Add Reference/s Page 86)
4. Hazrat Hafsah bint Hazrat Umar RA:
• Daughter of Hazrat Umar RA
• Married to Khunais - Migrated to Abyssinia
• Husband died in Battle of Badr
• Prophet S married her in 3 AH to strengthen ties with Hazrat Umar’s
tribe
• Lived with Hazrat Aisha and Sawdah and became their good friend
• Spent her time reading and writing
• She was fasting when the Prophet S left this world
• She kept in her safe custody the 1st ever copy of Holy Quran (Mashaf e
Hafsa) - Asked her brother to distribute all her property amongst the
poor at her death bed
• Narrated 60 ahadis - Died in 45 AH. The Prophet S has said, “She is the
one who keeps fast during the day and who stands during the night for
worship”.
5. Hazrat Zainab RA bint Khuzaymah
• Daughter of Khuzaymah bin Abdullah
• Married to Abdullah bin Jahsh
• Husband died at Battle of badr

• Prophet S married after a year after she was widowed to give her
protection
• She was called Umm-ul-Masakeen due to her generosity
• She died within three months of her marriage to the Prophet
• The Prophet S himself led her funeral prayer, and himself lowered her
in the grave.
• She is buried in Jannat-al-Baqi.

6. Hazrat Umm e-Salamah RA:


• Amongst the early converts who migrated to Abyssinia
• 1st woman to migrate to Yathrib
• Her husband was wounded in Uhad and passed away at another
expedition, leaving behind many children
• She initially refused to the Prophet’s proposal to marry but later agreed
on persuasion
• She went to battles with the Prophet S
• Suggested that the Prophet give Sadqah after the treaty of Hudaybia
• The Prophet S consulted her in some matters. When the treaty of
Hudaibiya was concluded, the Muslims had to go back to Madinah.
Prophet S ordered them to shave their heads and offer sacrifice their
animals, but the companions showed some reluctance. When the
Prophet S told this to Umm e Salamah RA, she suggested him to offer
sacrifice and shave his head at first. When the Muslims saw this, they
followed the Prophet S example/
• Her style of recitation was identical to that of Prophet’s

• Died in 60 AH and buried in Jannat-al-Baqi. (Add reference/s)
7. Hazrat Zainab RA Bin Jahsh:
• 1st cousin of the Prophet S - Married to Zaid bin Haris RA
• She did not want to marry Zaid bin Harith RA since he was a slave but
she did so on Prophet’s insistence
• However her marriage with Hazrat Zaid was unsuccessful and they got
divorced
• Then the Prophet S proposed to marry her
• She was initially reluctant but got married after orders to do so came in
the Quran :”Then when Zaid has dissolved his marriage with her, We
joined her in marriage with you”(33:38)
• Bought along a dowry of 400 dirhams
• Used to do needle work to meet expenses
• After the death of the Prophet S, she refused to take allowance from the
state and gave it to the needy

• Was the first one to die after Prophet’s death in 20 AH. Prophet S
foretold about her death in these words, “My wife with long hands will
be the first one to meet me after my death”
8. Hazrat Jawayria RA Bint Haris:

• She was a captive taken from an expedition against Banu Mustaliq in 5


AH
• Given to Sabit Bin Qaisin as booty
• She wanted to pay her ransom to get freedom
• Prophet S saw her nobility and agreed to pay ransom and married her
• Likewise, all her tribesmen were freed
• Her father - a tribal chief - also converted to Islam
• She died in 50 AH

9. Hazrat Umme Habibah RA bint Abu Sufyan:


• Formerly named as Ramlah
• Daughter of Abu Sufyan, one of the chief and bitterest enemy of
Prophet S
• Early convert
• Migrated to Abyssinia with husband, Ubaidullah bin Jahsh
• There he converted to Christianity so she divorced him
• On hearing this, the Prophet S married her and built for her an
apartment
• When her father came to see the Prophet S she did not allow him to sit
in the Prophet’s bed
• Took food and water for Hazrat Usman RA while he was besieged
during his caliphate
• Died in 44 AH. (Add any reference)(Page 88)

10. Hazrat Saffiya RA Bint Huyyay:


• Daughter of a Jew: Huyyay Bin Akhtab – one of Prophet’s leading
opponents
• Left Madinah when her tribe, Banu Nadir, was exiled in 3 AH
• In 7AH, Muslims conquered Khayber, where her tribesmen were settled
• She was initially given to another Muslim, but when the Prophet S saw
her, he put his cloak on her as a sign of marrying
• This is why she was called the chosen one. Prophet S has once said,
”indeed you are a Prophet’s daughter (Hazrat Haroon AS), and indeed
your uncle (Musa AS) was also a prophet and you are the wife of a
Prophet”.
• She accepted Islam from the Prophet S

11. Hazrat Maimoonah RA bint al - Harith:


• She had been married twice before and was a widow
• She was sister in law of Hazrat Abbas RA, Prophet’s uncle
• Hazrat Abbas suggested her marriage to the Prophet S while he was
performing Umrah in 7 AH
• Prophet S proposed her during pilgrimage
• He invited Makkans to a feast but since the Makkans wanted him to
leave in 3 days as agreed, they married outside Makkah
• She died in 61 AH , at the same spot where they were married
• She was last of the Prophet’s wives to follow him.
• Prophet S called her “Symbol of goodness”. Hazrat Aisha RA narrated,
“…she surely was the most righteous amongst us and the kindest
towards her relatives”

12. Hazrat Rehana RA bint Sham’oon:


• Belonged to Banu Nadhir, married to a Jew from Banu Quraidha
• Captive of war - Prophet proposed - Initially reluctant, but finally
agreed
• Died 10 years after the death of the Prophet S

13.Hazrat Maria Qibtia RA:

 She was a Coptic Christian


• Sent by the archbishop of Alexandria Maqauqas, in Egypt as a gift to
the Prophet S in the 7th year of Hijrat, when Prophet S invited the
Emperors and Kings towards Islam.
• She accepted Islam before reaching Madinah
• Prophet S married her, and built a garden house for her stay.
• Gave birth to Prophet’s 3rd son Ibrahim, unfortunately who too died in
10 AH
