Introduction
When designing and installing a photovoltaic system in a home, several important aspects
must be considered to ensure an efficient and sustainable implementation. First, it is essential
to perform a detailed analysis of the home's location, considering factors such as the
orientation and angle of the roof, the amount of available sunlight, and possible obstructions
that may create shadows. In this way, the type of installation equipment can be considered to
meet the home's electricity consumption.

On the other hand, evaluating the home's energy demand is essential to properly size the
system, ensuring that the installed capacity can meet daily electricity needs. In addition, the
system's components, such as solar panels, inverters, mounting systems, and wiring, must be
taken into account, selecting those that offer high efficiency and durability.

Another important aspect, which is the consumer's stakeholder, is economic viability,

considering the initial installation costs, possible government subsidies or incentives, and the
payback time of the investment. It is taken into account that safety is also a priority. Therefore,
the installation must comply with local regulations and be carried out by certified
professionals.

When estimating and quoting a photovoltaic installation for domestic use, the maintenance
and monitoring of the system must be planned to ensure its long-term performance, thus
guaranteeing a clean and reliable source of energy. These aspects combined allow not only
to optimize the installation of the photovoltaic system, but also to maximize the
environmental and economic benefits that are beneficial to the consumer.

Consumption analysis

Based on the user's energy consumption record, the bi-monthly data recorded was taken into
account, considering the period for the total sum in order to obtain the total consumption. To
carry out the calculation, the consumption figures for the consumption period (month) were
taken from the following graph.

Based on the coordinates of the location, to calculate the maximum temperature, average temperature
and minimum temperature, the data from NASA's POWER Data Access Viewer was consulted based

Considering that the system will be installed based on a slope to the latitude of the site, the
solar resource to be considered will be that of the latitude with respect to the average
irradiance, which is 6.27 PSH.

Integration to the grid:

Based on information from CFE, the available integration capacity to the General
Distribution Network is 23 kW as of June 2024. Therefore, it is not necessary to make a
request for reinforcement works to be able to interconnect the user's power plant.

6
Photovoltaic power

Considering that the system will carry out its based on the analysis of the user's total consumption,
the estimated photovoltaic power will be calculated based on the following equation:
𝑄𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙
𝑃𝑃𝑉 =
365 ∗ 𝑃𝑆𝐻 ∗ 𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑

Where:
𝑃𝑃𝑉 𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 is the estimated generator power to be installed (kWDC).
365 days in a year (day/year).
𝑃𝑆𝐻 peak solar hours in the region (h/day).
𝜂𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 estimated efficiency of the PVS which will be 77%
Sustituyendo valores:
914𝐾𝑊ℎ/𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟
𝑃𝑃𝑉 = = 0.51𝐾𝑊𝐷𝐶
365 ∗ 6.27ℎ/𝑑𝑎𝑦 ∗ 0.77
The 𝑃𝑃𝑉 𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 es de 0.51𝐾𝑊𝐷𝐶

Thermal characterization

Next, the performance of the modules must be characterized to achieve the daily energy
production, where the operating temperature at the site will be first calculated using the
equation:
𝐻𝑆𝑇𝐶
𝑇𝑃𝑉𝑀 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 + (𝑇𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 − 𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 ) ( )
𝐻𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇
Where
𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 is the average site room temperature (°C).
𝑇𝐶𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 is the Nominal Operating Cell Temperature (°C).
𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 is the room temperature at Nominal Operating Cell Temperature conditions
(°C).
𝐻𝑆𝑇𝐶 is the Standard Test Conditions irradiance (1000 W/m2).
𝐻𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 is the Nominal Operating Cell Temperature irradiance (800 W/m2).

7
To take into account the value of 𝑇𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 , it will be obtained from the technical sheet of the
AXIpremium XL HC 430 - 455 Wp module.

parameters Value
Nominal power (P) 455Wp
Open circuit voltage (Voc) 50.34 V
Short Circuit current (Isc) 11.54 A
Temperature coefficient (Isc) (%/°C) 0.048
Temperature coefficient (Voc)( %/°C) -0.27
Temperature coefficient (Pmp)( %/°C) -0.35
NOCT(°C) 45

Replacing values

 The 𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 is considered as the Tmax of the site

1000 𝑊/𝑚2
𝑇𝑃𝑉𝑀 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 35.63°𝐶 + (45°𝐶 − 20°𝐶 ) ( ) = 66.88°𝐶
800 𝑊/𝑚2

Therefore, the temperature difference is calculated with the following equation:

∆𝑇 = 𝑇𝑃𝑉𝑀 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 − 𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝑆𝑇𝐶
Taking into account that 𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝑆𝑇𝐶 is a temperature of 25°C we substitute the data.
∆𝑇 = 66.88°𝐶 − 25°𝐶= 41.88°C
Once the performance of the modules has been calculated, the thermal characterization of
each electrical parameter is calculated with the following equations:
𝑃𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 𝑃𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 [1 + ∆𝑇 ∗ γ ]
𝑉𝑂𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 𝑉𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 [1 + ∆𝑇 ∗ β ]
𝐼𝑆𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 𝐼𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 [1 + ∆𝑇 ∗ α ]
Where:

𝛼 is the temperature coefficient for current (%/° C).

𝛽 is the temperature coefficient for voltage (%/° C).
𝛾 is the temperature coefficient for power (%/° C).
* In percentage values, divide by 100 to remove this parameter.
𝑃𝑃𝑉𝑀 is the nominal PVM power (Wp).
𝑉𝑂𝐶 is the nominal PVM open-circuit voltage (V).

8
𝐼𝑆𝐶 is the nominal PVM short-circuit current (A).
These values can be found in the module's technical data sheet.
Replacing values:
𝑃𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = (455 𝑊)[1 + 41.88°𝐶 ∗ (−0.0035)] = 388.30W
𝑉𝑂𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 50.34𝑉[1 + 41.88°𝐶 ∗ (−0.0027)] = 44.64V
𝐼𝑆𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 11.54𝐴[1 + 41.88°𝐶 ∗ (0.00048)] = 11.77A
Based on the results of the above calculations, the photovoltaic system will be designed as a
reference.

Inverter sizing

The total number of photovoltaic modules to be installed was calculated based on the
following equation.
𝑃𝑃𝑉 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑
𝑁𝑃𝑉𝑀 =
𝑃𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
Considering the previous calculations we substitute in the equation:

0.51𝐾𝑊
𝑁𝑃𝑉𝑀 = 388.30𝑤 = 1.31≈ 2 módulos

Based on the 2 estimated photovoltaic modules, the installed nominal capacity is obtained with the
following equation:

𝑃𝑃𝑉 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙 = (2)(455𝑊𝑝) = 910𝑊

For the interconnection, the GROWATT inverter, MIN 4600 TL-X2, with 4.6 kW of power and 220
V AC, 2L+N+PE, was chosen. The data provided in its technical sheet can be found in the following
table.

Parameter Value
Maximum PV input power (STC) 6900W
Start voltage 50V
Maximum current per MPPT 16A
Nominal voltage 360v
Efficiency 98.4%
MPPTs number 2
Maximum Voltage 550v

9
The number of inverters to be estimated for the installation is obtained from the following
equation:
𝑃𝑃𝑉 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙
𝑁𝐼𝑁𝑉 =
𝑃𝐼𝑁𝑉
Replacing values:
910𝐾𝑊
𝑁𝐼𝑁𝑉 = = 0.19 ≈ 1
4600𝑊
1 inverter will be used for the photovoltaic system.
An oversizing is then carried out to achieve correct operation of the inverter with the
following equation:
𝑃𝑃𝑉𝐺
𝑅𝐼𝑁𝑉 =
𝑃𝐼𝑁𝑉
Where:
𝑅𝐼𝑁𝑉 is the inverter ratio and it expresses the oversizing .

Replacing values:
0.910𝐾𝑊
𝑅𝐼𝑁𝑉 = = 0.19𝐾𝑊
4.6𝐾𝑊
How the maximum temperature is measured, now to know the number of maximum and
minimum chains it is necessary to characterize with the minimum temperature of the site for
the voltage parameters, which is done with the following equations.
1) First part with minimum temperature of -4.66°C
𝑊
1000 2
𝑇𝑃𝑉𝑀 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = −4.66°𝐶 + (45°𝐶 − 20°𝐶 ) ( 𝑚 ) = 26.59°𝐶
𝑊

𝑚
∆𝑇 = 26.59°𝐶 − 25°𝐶 = 1.59°𝐶
𝑉𝑂𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 = 50.34𝑉[1 + 1.59°𝐶 ∗ (−0.0027)] = 50.12V
2) Second part, minimum and maximum of series
The following equations are used:
𝑉𝐼𝑁𝑉 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡
𝑁𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑃𝑉𝑀 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 =
𝑉𝑂𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑡𝑒 (𝑇𝑚𝑎𝑥)

The string length will be between 2 and 10 modules in series to achieve the inverter voltage
parameters without damaging it. However, the user only needs 2 modules for his installation,
which only considers the series connection between the two modules.
The following table summarizes the details of the designated photovoltaic system design.
