Quarter 2
Self-Learning Module 3
Measuring Tools
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education 9) Self-Learning Module
on (Measuring Tools)!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education 9) Self-Learning Module
on (Measuring Tools)!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

LESSON

Introduction

In computer technology, measurements usually materialized in determining

computer’s function. The word “measurement” means determining a dimension,
capacity, or quantity of an object, or the duration of a task. These measurements
include whether a storage medium has enough space to store a file in its memory,
current temperature, speed and performance of the CPU.

Measuring tools

A measuring tool is a device used to calculate a measurable quantity. It is

also used to take a count of quantitative data, such as weight, length, time and
temperature.

Rulers and scales are two common types of measuring tools used in Computer
Aided Design (Auto-CAD). The types of rulers include yardsticks and tape measures,
that can measure different distances. Rulers are useful because they can have
multiple measurement systems, such as metric and imperial units which are simple
to use because it has marks denoting subdivisions.

On the other hand, the instruments used to measure any quantity is called
measuring instruments. It measure the basic electrical quantities, such as voltage
and current. Multimeter is the most commonly used instrument in computer
technology to measure the quantities such as voltage, current, and resistance one
at a time. It can be used to measure DC & AC voltages, DC & AC currents and
resistances of several ranges.

Types of Basic Measuring Instruments

The basic measuring instruments are classified into two:

1. Voltmeter
2. Ammeter
Voltmeter

It is a measuring instrument which measures the voltage across any two points
of an electric circuit. The units of voltage are volt and the measuring instrument is
meter. Hence, the word “voltmeter” is obtained by combining the two words “volt”
and “meter”.

We can classify the voltmeters into the following two types based on the type
of voltage that it can measure:
1. DC Voltmeter- measures the Direct Current voltage across any two
points of an electric.

2. AC Voltmeter- measures the AC voltage across any two points of an

electric circuit.

https://www.tutorialspoint.com/electronic_measuring_instruments/measuring_instruments.htm

Ammeter

It is a measuring instrument which measures the current flowing through any

two points of an electric circuit. The unit of current is ampere and the measuring
instrument is meter. The word “ammeter” is obtained by combining “am” of ampere
with “meter”.

Ammeter can also be classified into two types based on the type of current that
it can measure:

1. DC Ammeter-can be used to measure the DC currents from 0 to 50

amperes.

https://www.tutorialspoint.com/electronic_measuring_instruments/measuring_instruments.htm
2. AC Ammeter-measures the AC current that flows through any two points
of an electric circuit from 0-100 amperes.

CLASSIFICATION OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS

The measuring instruments are classified into three types:

1. Electrical measuring instruments- are used for measuring electrical

quantities such as current, voltage, power, and others. The good examples
of electrical instrument are ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter.

2. Mechanical measuring instruments- are used for measuring the physical

quantities which have static and stable condition.

3. Electronic measuring instruments-are used to measure anything that

gives quick response time. This electrical and mechanicals instrument
provide quick response as compared to the mechanical and electrical
instrument.
