Group Activity for Police Officers: Leadership Simulation Exercise

Activity Name: Leadership in Action: The Scenario Challenge

Objective:
To enhance leadership skills among police officers by simulating real-life scenarios that require
effective decision-making, teamwork, and communication.
Duration:
1.5 hours
Materials Needed:
 Scenario cards (each containing a different policing situation)
 Whiteboard and markers
 Timer
 Notepads and pens for each group
Activity Overview:
1. Preparation (15 minutes):
o Divide participants into small groups of 4-5 officers.
o Distribute scenario cards to each group. Each card should outline a policing
situation requiring leadership, such as a community event, a high-stress incident
(like a protest or emergency), or an internal team conflict.
2. Discussion and Strategy Development (30 minutes):
o Each group reads their scenario and discusses the following:
 Identify the key challenges in the scenario.
 Determine the best leadership approach to take (e.g., transformational,
servant, or adaptive leadership).
 Develop a plan of action, including how to motivate team members,
communicate with the community, and ensure ethical decision-making.
o Groups should jot down their strategies on a notepad.
3. Role-Playing (30 minutes):
o After the discussion, each group presents their scenario and their proposed
leadership strategy to the entire group.
o The presenting group should role-play their response to the scenario,
demonstrating their leadership approach.
o After each presentation, allow for 5-10 minutes of feedback from the other
participants, focusing on strengths and areas for improvement in their leadership
approach.
4. Reflection and Debrief (15 minutes):
o Conclude the activity with a group discussion on what they learned about
leadership in policing, emphasizing the importance of adaptability, collaboration,
and ethical decision-making.
o Encourage participants to share insights on how they can apply these leadership
skills in their daily duties.
Outcome:
Participants will enhance their understanding of various leadership styles in a policing context,
improve their teamwork and communication skills, and develop practical strategies for handling
real-world policing challenges effectively.
