Course Orthodontics I

Purposes of the course The course aim is to teach students: etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis,
prevention and treatment of dentofacial system anomalies and
deformations of the adolescence and adults.
Admission preconditions Prosthodontic Dentistry Phantom Course II
Learning outcomes Students will develop competencies, which are in relevance with the goals
of this course and deliverables of the entire program.

Grading system A student’s knowledge and skills are assessed through 100 points grading
system.

Grading system allows:


a) Five types of positive assessment
(A) Excellent – 91 -100 points;
(B) Very good – 81-90 points;
(C) Good – 71-80 points;
(D) Satisfactory – 61-70 points;
(E) Acceptable – 51-60 points.

b) Two types of negative assessment

(FX) Fail – 41-50 points, meaning that a student requires additional work to
pass the course and is given a chance to sit make-up exam after
independent work;
(F) Fail – 40 points and less, meaning that the work of a student is not
acceptable and he/she has to study the subject anew.
Credit is obtained if a student:

a) Has scored minimum required point of final exam;

b) Has scored minimum 51 points out of 100 points.


Make-up exam is scheduled with no less than 5 days interval after
announcement of the final exam results.

Evaluation criteria:

1. Oral presentation – 10 points

Is held 5 times, each is graded with 2 points.

Method Description:
Demonstration of knowledge of theoretical topics, discussion over specific
issues in the form of narration or answering questions.
2 Points: The student is well prepared, thoroughly proficient in syllabus
material. The answers to the questions are correct, justified and reasoned.
The student is thoughtful and well versed in the problem area.
1 Points: The student knows only part of the syllabus topic, the answers to
the questions are correct but incomplete / unreasonable.
0 Points: The student is completely unprepared. Does not have a syllabus
topic, cannot answer any questions.

2. Quiz – 40 points

The quiz is held 4 times during the rotation. Each quiz is graded with 10
points and includes 20 MCQs or 10 short answer questions.

MCQ
Method Description:
Students will be given a closed test with several possible answers. The
student must circle only one correct answer.

Criteria:
Assessment is done by tests with many optional answers each test is scored
0.5 points.

Short Answer Questions


Outcome Description:
The student will be given a question, without probable answers, the student
must answer correctly.

Criteria:
Each short answer question is rated 1 point.

3. Direct Observation of Procedural Skills - 10 points

Is held 2 times, each is graded with 5 points.

Taking a snapshot, model casting.

Method Description:
The student will be given an assignment - practical manipulation that has
been performed several times before on practical training.

The evaluation of a Direct Observation of Procedural Skills is determined


according to the evaluation checklist so that the total evaluation amounts to
5 points. The evaluation sheet is developed considering the specifics of the
task to be performed directly.

 Final exam - 40 points.

 40 MCQs-each test is graded with 0.5 point – 20 points;


 20 Short Answer Questions - each is graded with 1 point

Plagiarism and cheating are serious forms of academic misconduct and


violation of the norms and requirements for academic integrity. Using
somebody's ideas and opinion without proper citation and referencing is not
tolerated. If there are any precedents of plagiarism, a lecturer is required
not to assess and evaluate a student's work. Written assignments, which
require citation and referencing are checked through plagiarism detection
software (Turnitin). Written assignments with any occurrence of plagiarism
will not be assessed and a lecturer should provide feedback to a student
clarifying the reason. A student is eligible to appeal the decision about
nullifying an assignment. The appeal is studied in accordance with the
University Code of Ethic and Disciplinary Liability.
Administrative remarks  On the first lecture of the course, the lecturer is obliged to inform the
students on the work requirements of the program and the strategies
for the proceeding work.
 The student must:
 Carefully study the course syllabus.
 Comply with the requirements set forth in the syllabus (to comply
with homework, prepare for seminars and practical work, testing,
presentation, etc.).
 A student is admitted to the final exam if he/she has scored
minimum required points of mid-term evaluation (50% = 30 points
of mid-term evaluation ).

 A student has a right to take make-up exam in case he/she has
scored 41-50 points out of final grade, or 51 points out of final
grade, however, could not score required minimum points of final
exam (50% +1 of final exam).
 The final exam is considered as passed if the student has at least 21
points (minimal competence limit).
