𝑽 = 𝑽+ + 𝑽− 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏 Where, 𝑽 + − 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝑽 − − 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒗𝒆

Power Wave

The Waves going towards the port are “a”, the waves travelling away from the port are
“b”. By definition current going into the port are counted Positive and current flowing out of
the port are counted Negative.

In order to make the definitions consistent with the conservation of energy, the voltage
is normalized to√𝒁𝟎 .
𝑽+
𝒂= → 𝑽 + = 𝒂 √ 𝒁𝟎
√ 𝒁𝟎
𝑽−
𝒃= → 𝑽 − = 𝒃 √𝒁𝟎
√ 𝒁𝟎
Substitute the Value of 𝑽 + 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑽 –in Equ. (1 & 2)

𝑽 = 𝒂 √𝒁𝟎 + 𝒃 √𝒁𝟎 = √𝒁𝟎 ∗ (𝒂 + 𝒃) 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟑

ABCD Parameter Equation:

𝑽𝟏 = 𝑨 𝑽𝟐 − 𝑩 𝑰𝟐 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟓

𝑰𝟏 = 𝑪 𝑽𝟐 − 𝑫 𝑰𝟐 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟔

Substitute the Value of Voltage & Current from Equ. (3 & 4) in (Equ. 5)
(𝒂𝟐 − 𝒃𝟐 )
√𝒁𝒐𝟏 (𝒂𝟏 + 𝒃𝟏 ) = 𝑨 √𝒁𝒐𝟐 (𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐 ) − 𝑩
√𝒁𝒐𝟐

𝑨 𝒁𝒐𝟐 (𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐 ) − 𝑩(𝒂𝟐 − 𝒃𝟐 )

(𝒂𝟏 + 𝒃𝟏 ) = 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟕
√𝒁𝒐𝟏 √𝒁𝒐𝟐

Similarly for Equ.6

𝑪 √𝒁𝒐𝟏 𝒁𝒐𝟐 (𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐 ) − 𝑫 √𝒁𝒐𝟏 (𝒂𝟐 − 𝒃𝟐 )

(𝒂𝟏 − 𝒃𝟏 ) = 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟖
√𝒁𝒐𝟐
w.kt. 𝒁𝟎 = 𝒁𝒐𝟏 = 𝒁𝒐𝟐 𝒐𝒓√𝒁𝟎 = √𝒁𝒐𝟏 = √𝒁𝒐𝟐

By assigning the some variable to normalize the Equ.7 &8

𝑨 𝒁𝒐𝟐 𝑩 𝑩 𝑪 𝒁𝒐𝟐 √𝒁𝒐𝟏 √𝒁𝒐𝟏

𝑫 =𝑫
√𝒁𝒐𝟏 √𝒁𝒐𝟐 √𝒁𝒐𝟏 √𝒁𝒐𝟐 𝒁𝟎 √𝒁𝒐𝟐 √𝒁𝒐𝟐

Now, Equ. (7 & 8) becomes,

̅ (𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐 ) − 𝑩
(𝒂𝟏 + 𝒃𝟏 ) = 𝑨 ̅ (𝒂𝟐 − 𝒃𝟐 ) = 𝒂𝟐 (𝑨

S – Parameters Equation:

𝒃𝟏 = 𝑺𝟏𝟏 𝒂𝟏 + 𝑺𝟏𝟐 𝒂𝟐 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏𝟏

𝒃𝟐 = 𝑺𝟐𝟏 𝒂𝟏 + 𝑺𝟐𝟐 𝒂𝟐 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏𝟐

If, Port 2 is Perfectly Matched a2 = 0. Substitute the value of a2 in Equ. (9, 10, 11 & 12)

𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟗, ̅+𝑩

(𝒂𝟏 + 𝒃𝟏 ) = 𝒃𝟐 (𝑨 ̅) 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏𝟑

To find S21 – Simply, to add the Equ. (13 & 14)

̅+𝑩
𝟐 𝒂𝟏 = 𝒃𝟐 (𝑨 ̅ +𝑪

̅) 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏𝟕
𝒃𝟐 𝟐
= = 𝑺𝟐𝟏 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏𝟖
𝒂𝟏 (𝑨̅+𝑩

To find S11 – Simply, to subtract the Equ. (13 & 14)

̅+𝑩
𝟐 𝒃𝟏 = 𝒃𝟐 (𝑨 ̅ −𝑪
̅−𝑫
̅) 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟏𝟗

Rearrange the Equ. 17

𝟐𝒂𝟏

̅+𝑩
(𝑨 ̅+𝑪 ̅+𝑫

Substitute the value of 𝒃𝟐 in Equ. 19, then

𝟐𝒂𝟏 ̅+𝑩
𝒃𝟏 (𝑨 ̅ −𝑪

𝟐 𝒃𝟏 = ̅+𝑩

If, Port 1 is Perfectly Matched a1 = 0. Substitute the value of a1 in Equ. (9, 10, 11 & 12)

𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟗, ̅−𝑩

𝒃𝟏 = 𝒂𝟐 (𝑨 ̅ ) + 𝒃𝟐 (𝑨

To find S22 – Simply, to add the Equ. (21 & 22)

̅−𝑩

𝒃𝟐 (−𝑨̅+𝑩
̅ −𝑪
̅+𝑫̅)
𝑺𝟐𝟐 = = 𝑬𝒒𝒖. 𝟐𝟓
𝒂𝟐 ̅+𝑩
(𝑨 ̅+𝑪̅+𝑫

To find S12 – Equ. 21 has divided by a2, then

𝒃𝟏 𝒃

𝒂𝟐 𝒂𝟐

Substitute the Value of Equ.25 in the above equation, then

𝒃𝟏 (−𝑨̅+𝑩̅−𝑪̅+𝑫̅)
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = ̅−𝑩
= (𝑨 ̅ ) + {[ ̅+𝑩
] ∗ (𝑨 ̅ )}
𝒂𝟐 ̅+𝑩
(𝑨 ̅ +𝑪

Final Solution of the above equation are,

𝒃𝟏 ̅𝑫

𝑩 𝑩
𝑨+ + 𝑪 𝒁𝟎 + 𝑫 𝑨 + + 𝑪 𝒁𝟎 + 𝑫
𝒁𝟎 𝒁𝟎

From the above equation finally we get, (𝑨𝑫 − 𝑩𝑪) = 𝟏

Then,
𝟐
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = 𝑺𝟐𝟏 =
𝑩
𝑨+ + 𝑪 𝒁𝟎 + 𝑫
𝒁𝟎

If the Network is Symmetrical,
