Media Studies Evaluation

Looking back to your

preliminary task, what
do you feel that you
have learnt in the
progression from it to
the full product?

When carrying out our preliminary task I found

that all the skills we learnt were incredibly
useful to us when we began filming for our final
product. During the process of filming the
preliminary product, I took the role of the
cameraperson, which meant that I had
developed skills on how to use a professional
camera and how to use the equipment that
came with it.

Teamwork
Teamwork was a skill that was necessary from the beginning till the
very end of the production.
I learned to develop further skills when it came to producing our
main production. I noticed that while filming the preliminary task
our group lacked teamwork and cooperation. Despite it being a
minor task, we were unable to produce an adequate preliminary
video the first time and so, understood that a change in group
and positions had to be made.
The new group consisted of me being the camera person instead of
being the director, like the first time. I focused on improving on
the skills that required more attention, for example, I ensure
that there were enough shots, and the correct shots used, I also
contributed to the directing, ensuring that it was carried out
properly in order for the actors to know what they were doing.

Camerawork
The preliminary task was one that did not require a large amount of shots, angles or camera
movements. It was very simple in comparison to the camerawork (shots, angles and
movements) used in our final product. All the skills we developed were taken further into
account and bettered as we began to look at including more creativity in our final product.
For example:

We strongly took into account the 180 rule which seemed to be a struggle for us. When
filming we found that the 180 degree rule was one that would break the continuity in the
final product if it was not taken into account, this idea was developed from the information
we learned while carrying out the preliminary task.

Match on action, was another skill that was put into practice in the preliminary task. This
was then used in our production effectively by the camera person whom I assisted in
ensuring the shot was correctly taken. For example, when Stefania (main protagonist)
reached in to switch the television on, we present a shot that showed precisely this.

With little intelligence in the media sector I was previously unable to effectively master the
shot reverse shot. But later found that this is a shot commonly used for presenting a
conversation between two or more people, or it could be used to present an action taking
place and the characters reaction shown, and then back to the action again we had used it
to do this with additional , when the ghostly figure appeared behind Blaire in the scene,
startling the audience as it was the first time they can seen the figure.

Camerawork continued
From all the basic skills we learnt from the preliminary task we began to develop
more creative shots in order to connote further meaning
I made sure that we considered the 180 degree rule, as well as involving match on
action, shot-reverse-shot and additional creative shots and angles to supplement
them in order to produce a final product that would engage and interact with the
audience fully .
For example when we used the low angle shot from below the table, In an almost
canted angle producing a tension filled atmosphere. This atmosphere was
constant until the very end through a number of different camerawork
techniques (point of view, over the shoulder shot)
With the composition of shots, I found that there was inadequate framing whilst
filming the preliminary task, so I made sure, that learning form this, the
organisation of the characters and elements and the framing of them was
contributing to help develop a story from the shots to present to the audience.
The depth of field often changed in order to bring specific aspects in the shot
into focus, this was an element that was not necessary in the prelimary task,
however, was encompassed in the main product.

Planning
It was obvious that more planning was needed when
filming/creating the real product. We had to plan out
every shot before the actual filming day.
I developed understanding of the equipment: Cannon
600D/700D, Cannon XHA1. I was then able to assist the
camera person in producing the correct amount of shots.
Furthermore, in the planning of the production, my group
became familiar with the necessary softwares and
equipment, I ensured that I had basic understanding of
this too, developing skills on using final cut pro on the
Macbook.

Editing
When editing the preliminary task, there were not a lot of shots that were used to put the
sequence in order to create a productive narrative, however, this was not the case for
the final product. For that, we had to ensure that all the necessary shots were present so
they could be used in chronological order while editing.
We used continuity editing in order to present our linear storyline however, following our
90 minute synopsis, this scene is the basis of a non-linear story. With a number of
different shots, a multifaceted form of editing was needed to complete our final product.
It is clear that the preliminary task required a simplistic form of editing consisting of one
specific transition, this was the jump cut, which produced basic continuity. However, in
the final product we had to ensure that the construction of the sequence would allow the
audience to engage and gain thrill through aspects of fast paced editing of jump cuts.
Sound was the main element of the build-up of tension within the sequence. Sound was
not something that was focused upon in the preliminary task and only included diegetic
sound recorded directly from the primary shots taken , however, in the final product the
case was completely the opposite. We used a non-diegetic score music in order to build
tension and diegetic whispers that blended in with the score music.

Finally
I learnt that the overall skills developed from the
preliminary task were effectively carried through
to the final product and further developed with the
range of different elements within the media
sector.
