TOPIC/SUBJECT MATTER:

Calculating Speed
OBJECTIVE:
Calculates speed of a
moving object from
a certain school to
Suribao river.
MATH CONCEPT:
The speed can be calculated
by finding how much distance
travelled by the body and in
how much time with respect to
the point of observation.
Once we find these two things (distance
travelled and time taken to travel the
distance), we can divide the distance
travelled by the time taken to obtain the
speed of the object using formula;
Speed = distance/time
Where
d= distance travelled
t = time taken
A. DRILL
Find the value of X in the following
equations:
a. X – 10 = 7
b. 5 – X = 2
c. 11 + 5 = X
d. 8/X = 4
e. X/5 = 7
B. REVIEW
Find the value of the variable in the
following equations given that b = 10, c =
12
a. A = bc
b. A = b/c
c. A = c/b
d. 2a = bc/2
e. a/2 = b/c
Boronganons are fond of
travelling out of town or even go
to the beach and visiting beautiful
sceneries. Have you ever tried to
do so? What particular place did
you visit? How long did it take
you to ride this distance?
Ormoc
city
Bilira
n
Calbayog
city
San-Julian
Have you been to this place?
Where do you think we can see this?
Suribao River is one of the rivers
found in our place. It has many coconut
palms growing on its banks and
naturally flows into the pacific ocean,
which at that point normally quite
placid.
This is a natural boundary or “delta”
between the town of Maydolong and
the City of Borongan.
What is the distance from the city proper
to Suribao River?

If we will visit the place, how long

do you think shall we take there
using tricycle as a means of
transportation?

From your answers, we can now compute
the speed of the tricycle using the formula:

S=
Where:
S is speed
d is distance
t is time
Group yourselves into four.
Each group must have 1
runner, starter, timer and a
recorder. The other
members will serve as
watchers/ observers.
Procedure:
1. Measure 50 meter distance with a meter stick.
2. Mark the starting point with a pole.
3. Assign a recorder and a time keeper.
4. Take turns in running the given distance.
5. Record the data.
Runner Distance Time Speed
1 50m
2 50m
3 50m
4 50m
6. Calculate the speed using the
given formula.
7. Answer the following questions:
a. Who is the fastest runner?
b. How about the slowest?
How do we compute the speed of a
moving object?
What is speed?
What is distance?
What is time?
Let us try this!
What is the speed of a bicycle if
its takes 2 hours to Suribao
Bridge from Sabang Central
Elem. School?
Calculate the speed of the
DLTB bus if it runs 160 km
in 2 hours.
Assignment:
Conduct an interview of a
tricycle driver on how much is
their travel time from Lalawigan
National High school to
Borongan City proper and
compute the speed.
