Art:
You see it everywhere you go. Some of it’s not-so-good and sometimes it
stops you in your tracks.
But creativity and the act of making art are more important to our planet than
you think.
Can you imagine a world without art?
It’s horrifying.
Sure, earth has many beautiful wonders and mother nature produces some
stunning artwork. But there’s something about the individuality of humans
and our creative minds.
Art is everywhere we go, and we must continue to cultivate creativity in our
communities to ensure that it stays alive.
If you’re wondering why you should even care.

22
Have you ever wondered what ART is? Is it only
about painting? And sculptures found in museums?
How about the jingles we hear in Television
commercials, advertisement, or those decorations and
styles on our food, is that considered art? And
definitely YES! All of that are arts, meaning
everything you see in this beautiful world is an art
manmade and not. Art is a tool for communication.
23
SULIT © 2021
Whether it is a painting or a performance as long as it
is a venue for one to convey or express a thought,
emotions, or aspirations, it is considered art. Art
offers us the chance to learn and understand artists
and her society. Art offers us the chance to learn and
understand artist where they belong through their
works.
24
SULIT © 2021
Why do people create art? Did you ever stop and
reflect why people make songs? Perform dances or
draw? Art, unlike food and shelter, is not necessary
for humans to live. But what makes us or drives us to
create and perform? Why is art so special to us
humans?
25
SULIT © 2021
Art is one of the earliest and most basic forms of
communication. This is seen in the prehistoric visual
artworks like the cave drawings and other early
artifacts. This is also evident in our folk songs and
rituals. The visual and performing arts are ways for
people to express themselves share their individual
insights to others. Through these arts, they catch
other people’s attention, imagination, and admiration.

The origins of art history can be traced back
to the Prehistoric era, before written records
were kept. The earliest artifacts come from
the Paleolithic era, or the Old Stone Age, in
the form of rock carvings, engravings,
pictorial imagery, sculptures, and stone
arrangements.

B. CALLIGRAPHY
The art of beautiful handwriting. The term may
derive from the Greek words for “beauty” (kallos)
and “to write” (graphein). It implies a sure
knowledge of the correct form of letters—i.e., the
conventional signs by which language can be
communicated—and the skill to make them with
such ordering of the various parts and harmony of
proportions that the experienced, knowledgeable
eye will recognize such composition as a work of
art. Calligraphic work, as art, need not be legible in
the usual sense of the word.
46
SULIT © 2021
C. DANCE
The movement of the body in a
rhythmic way, usually to music
and within a given space, for
the purpose of expressing an
idea or emotion, releasing
energy, or simply taking
delight in the movement itself 47
SULIT © 2021
E. DRAWING
The art or technique of
producing images on a
surface, usually paper, by
means of marks, usually of
ink, graphite, chalk,
charcoal, or crayon.
48
SULIT © 2021
F. LITERATURE
A body of written works. The name has
traditionally been applied to those
imaginative works of poetry and prose
distinguished by the intentions of their
authors and the perceived aesthetic
excellence of their execution. Literature
may be classified according to a variety of
systems, including language, national origin,
historical period, genre, and subject matter.
49
SULIT © 2021
G. FILM
Also called motion picture or movie, series
of still photographs on film, projected in
rapid succession onto a screen by means of
light. Because of the optical phenomenon
known as persistence of vision, this gives
the illusion of actual, smooth, and
continuous movement.
50
SULIT © 2021
H. MUSIC
This art concerned with combining vocal or
instrumental sounds for beauty of form or
emotional expression, usually according to cultural
standards of rhythm, melody, and, in most Western
music, harmony. Both the simple folk song and the
complex electronic composition belong to the same
activity, music. Both are humanly engineered; both
are conceptual and auditory, and these factors have
been present in music of all styles and in all periods
of history, throughout the world.
51
SULIT © 2021
I. PAINTING
the expression of ideas and emotions, with the
creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in a two-
dimensional visual language. The elements of this
language—its shapes, lines, colours, tones, and
textures—are used in various ways to produce
sensations of volume, space, movement, and light
on a flat surface. These elements are combined into
expressive patterns in order to represent real or
supernatural phenomena, to interpret a narrative
theme, or to create wholly abstract visual
relationships.

I. PRINT MAKING
an art form consisting of the production of images,
usually on paper but occasionally on fabric,
parchment, plastic, or other support, by various
techniques of multiplication, under the direct
supervision of or by the hand of the artist. Such fine
prints, as they are known collectively, are
considered original works of art, even though they
can exist in multiples.
54
SULIT © 2021
I. SCULPTURE
an artistic form in which hard or plastic materials
are worked into three-dimensional art objects. The
designs may be embodied in freestanding objects, in
reliefs on surfaces, or in environments ranging from
tableaux to contexts that envelop the spectator. An
enormous variety of media may be used, including
clay, wax, stone, metal, fabric, glass, wood, plaster,
rubber, and random “found” objects.
55
SULIT © 2021
I. THEATER
in dramatic arts, an art concerned almost
exclusively with live performances in which the
action is precisely planned to create a coherent and
significant sense of drama.
Though the word theatre is derived from the
Greek theaomai, “to see,” the performance itself
may appeal either to the ear or to the eye, as is
suggested by the interchangeability of the
terms spectator (which derives from words meaning
“to view”) and audience (which derives from words
meaning “to hear”).

According to Waves Institute of Fashion Designing in
India they define Arts and Crafts as a type of “ARTS
that typically refers to the assembling of handmade
goods. This type of arts typically involves making items
that are not only attractive, but useful as well and
generally well made from raw natural materials like
fibers, wood, textiles, candles, stuffed toys, jewellery,
ceramic, soap, coal, and a lot more. An Arts And Craft
has been around for centuries and an individual of any
age irrespective of their gender can learn it very easily.

Handicrafts are a variety of useful work to create
decorative objects which are made completely by hands
or with simple tools. Handicrafts applies to a wide range
of creative, design activities that are related to making
things, objects, showpiece items with one’s hand and
skill. Handicraft is usually applied to traditional
techniques of creating items.

ELEMENTS OF ARTS
134
SULIT © 2021
The elements of art convey meaning,
and express ideas and feelings. They
are firmly rooted in the experiences in
particular cultures, their values and
priorities.

The Three Key Elements of Art are:
Form
It is the surface feature of an artwork. It does not have
anything to do with the arts in depth meaning. Like this
saying,“What you see is what you get.” form is just what it
is, nothing else.
For example in visual arts, their forms are drawing,
painting, sculpture and architecture. In music, it pertains to
the structure of a musical composition such as opera and
serenade.
SULIT © 2021
143
Content
It is what the artwork is all about. The content contains the
subject matter that carries the message of the work. If form
is the embodiment of the work, then the content is its
substance.
For example in music, the content refers to the principal and
recognizable melody of the composition. It is something
stated, developed and repeated in the duration of the piece.
144
SULIT © 2021
Context
It refers to the varied situations in which the works have been
produced or interpreted.
There are two kinds of context in arts: the primary and secondary.
Primary context is the personal type, it concerns in the sentiments
of the artist such as his beliefs, values, interests, attitudes and
emotions. While the Secondary context refers to the place and
period in which the artist has made his work like the environment,
religious and philosophical convictions, climate and geography in
which the work is made and his purpose in creating the artwork.
This is the various circumstances in which works of art are
145
produced and/or interpreted.
SULIT © 2021
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
146
SULIT © 2021
Design is the overall structure of an art form. It is the means by
which artists indicate and demonstrate the ideas and feelings they
wish to convey. The principles of design are also called the
organization of the elements. They help the people make sense of
our environment, and make it aesthetically pleasing and interesting
at the same time.
These principles are tools for organizing the elements of art to
produce a unified and harmonious design, composition, or
performance.
147
SULIT © 2021
Here are some principles of design found in the arts:
Harmony
This refers to the wholeness of the design, the pleasing
arrangement of parts, and the agreement between parts of a
composition, resulting in a united whole. The harmony is present if
each element of art plays a vital role in the artworks.
For example, in music, harmony is the combination of musical
notes simultaneously played to produce music.
148
SULIT © 2021
Variety
It pertains to the assortment or diversity of a work of art. We can
see variety on all our surroundings.
Flowers as an example, comes in different colors, shapes, and scent
because every flower varies from one another.
Variations are produced so that the monotony and uniformity in the
environment are prevented.
149
SULIT © 2021
Rhythm
It is the regular, repeated pattern in the elements of art. It is a flow,
or feeling of movement, achieved by the distribution of visual
units or sound units in time.
The rhythm or beat is natural in the universe. It exists in the human
heartbeat and in the cycle of night and day.
150
SULIT © 2021
Proportion
It is the relationship of a work of art from one another. A well-
proportioned shape is pleasing to the eye.
In a stage setting, the backdrop and the props must be appropriate
to the performers without outshining them so they do not steal the
audience’s attention.
151
SULIT © 2021
Movement
This is the fundamental principle in choreography and the theater
arts. Movement is a way to convey feelings and emotions.
It is the means by which dancers make use of their bodies to
express an inner condition.
The actors express their lines through facial expressions, gestures,
and body language as they move on stage.
152
SULIT © 2021
Emphasis and Subordination
Emphasis is the principle that gives importance or dominance to a
unit or an area. In opposite with subordination, it gives less
importance to a unit or area.
For example, in the performing arts the actors and dancers are
often placed in front center of the stage while the supporting cast
stay on the sides or in the background. In visual design, the
element may stand out by itself or attract attention because of its
size, position, or usage of elements.
