Displacement

x=x-
Example 1:

Starting frpm the church, a procession has to

take the following route: 50 m, north; 40 m,
east; and 60 m, north. To go back, it has to
follow the same route but in the opposite
direction. (a) What is the total distance traveled?
(b) What is the total displacement?
Speed and Velocity

Average speed:
= Note:
Instantaneous speed: v=
=
Example 1:

Vania walks to her school 360 m away at a

constant speed of 3.0 m/s. ten secons later, her
brother Angelito follows at a constant speed of
4.0m/s. (a) How long will it take for Angelito to
overtake Vania? (b) How far is Vania from school
when overtaken by Angelito?
Example 2:

Lean and Mickey who are 150 m apart start

walking toward each other at 3.0 m/s and 5.0
m/s, respectively. (a) How long will it take for
them to meet? (b) Find the corresponding
distance traveled by each.
Example 3:

• A lady passenger steps on one end af a moving

sidewalk in an airport tertminal. The sidewalk
is 50.0 m long and is moving at 1.25 m/s. Find
the time taken by the lady to reach the other
end of the sidewalk. (a) if the lady is standing
still and (b) if she walks at 1.50 m/s relative to
the moving sidewalk and in the same direction
as the sidewalk.
Example 4:

Refer to the same moving sidewalk in Sample

Problen 3. How long will it take a passenger
walking st 1.0 ms relative to the sidewalk, in the
opposite direction, to reach the other end of the
sidewalk?
Acceleration

=
Instantaneous acceleration: Note:
= v=
Example 1:

The position of an object as a function of time t

is given by ) (a) Give the velocity and the
acceleration as a function of time. (b) Find the
velocity and the acceleration at t=2.0s.
Example 2:

Derive the equation of velocity and acceleration

given that position and a are the initional
velocity and constant acceleration, respectively.
Find the position, velocity, and the acceleration
of the object at t=4.0s.

Example 2:
Angelito is driving at 6.0 m/s when a traffic
enforcer signals that he should speed up. He
then steps on the gas pedal and acceleraned
unifomly to a speed 15 m/s in 4.5 s. Find the
total distance Angelito traveled. Assume
Angelito’s reaction time is 0.15s.
Example 2:
At the instant the traffic light goes geen, a car
waiting at the intensection starts ahead with an
acceleration of 2.5 m/.At the same instant, a bus
coming from behid moving a 12.0 m/s passes
the car. When and where will the car catch up
with tha bus?
FREE FALL
Example 1:
Jason hits a volleyball so that it moves with an
initial velocity of 6.0 m/s straight upward. If the
volleybal starts from 2.0 m above the floor, how
long will it be in the air before it strikes the
floor?
Example 1:
A stone is trown vertically up with the initial
velocity of 4.9 m/s from the top of the building
that is 52 m high. On its way down, it misses the
top of the building and goes straight to the
ground. Find (a) the maximum height relative to
the ground, (b) its time of flight or the total time
it is in the air, and (c) its velocity just before it
reaches the ground
Example 2:
A boy thew a bull verticaly upward. It returned
so his hand after 9.8 s. (a) What was the ball's
initial speed? (b) With what speed did it return
to the boy's hand? (c) How high did it go?
Example 3:
A photographer inside a helicaper descending
vertically at 15 m/s at an altitude of 55 m
accidentally drops his camera. How log will it
take the camera to reach the ground?
