Hindustan Republic Association

• The Hindustan Republican Association was once called as Hindustan


Republican Socialist Association (HSRA).
• It was a revolutionary organization that operated more aggressively on the
indian subcontinet between 1928 and 1931 to overthow the British using
military combat.
• Hindustan Socialist Republican Association
(HSRA) was a revolutionary party set up by
Ram Prasad Bismil and his associates.
• To fight against British colonial rule in India
and achieve independence for the country.
RAM PRASAD BISMIL
• Date of birth: 11 June 1987
• Date of Death: 19 December 1927 (30 yrs)
• Birth Place: Shahjahanpur
• Cause of Death: Execution by hanging during
participation in the Indian Independence
Movement.
• Profession: Freedom fighter, Poet, Writer.
• Popular for Being one of the founders of HSRA,
and for involving in the Mainpuri Conspiracy in
1918
BACKGROUND OF HSRA
• The non-cooperation movement of 1920 resulted in the widespread
mobilization of Indians against British authority.
• Though it began as a nonviolent movement, it gradually developed
into violence.
• Following the Chauri Chaura incident, Gandhi stopped the
movement to prevent more bloodshed.
• This disappointed many of the Nationalists who doesn't like the
theory of non violence.
• They had the confidence that the British can be thrown out of the
country only by the way of non violence.
FORMATION OF HSRA
• The HRA was drafted by Bismil in 1923 at Allahabad with the blessing
of Lala Har Dayal.
• Other prominent members of the party were Sachindra Nath Sanyal and
Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee.
• The HRA formed centers at, Allahabad, Agra, Kanpur, Varanasi,
Lucknow, Shahjahanpur, and Saharanpur.
• It also had bomb manufacturing units at Calcutta and Deogarh.
• A manifesto for the party was written by Sanyal titled 'Revolutionary'.
• It inspired the youth of the country to join the party and take part in the
struggle.
• It demanded universal suffrage.
• The pamphlets were distributed in many cities in northern india.
Goals of HSRA

• To build a "Federal Republic of the United States of


India by an organised and military revolution.
• To bring freedom for India from Britishers.
Activities of the HSRA

• They conducted many robberies and raids in order to raise the funds to
acquire arms and weapons.
• Kakori Conspiracy ( Train Robbery)
• Simon Commission
• Contribution of Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat singh, etc.,
• Chandrasekhar Azad also involved in this Assosciation.
KAKORI CONSPIRCACY
• Planned by Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan
• The target was the guard cabin, carrying money collected from various
railway stations to be deposited in Lucknow.
• Though no passengers were targeted by the revolutionaries, one passenger
named Ahmed Ali was killed in the crossfire between the guards and
revolutionaries.
Simon Commission
• The Indian Statutory Commission also known as Simon Commison',
was a group of seven Members of Parliament under the chairmanship
of Sir John Simon (later, 1st Viscount Simon). The commission
arrived in British India in 1928 to study constitutional reform in
Britain's largest and most important possession.
• To enquire into the working of the
act and to suggest further reforms
in the system of administration.
Bhagath Singh
• Bhagat Singh (Born on August 24, 1908) shot another police officer
John Saunders in a case of mistaken identity. They had intended to
shoot Scott. However, the HSRA still claimed that revenge had been
exacted.
• Bhagath sing was arrested, and hanged out in 1931.
Chandra Shekar Azad
• Born: July 23, 1906 India
• Died: February 27, 1931 (aged 24) Prayagraj
India
• Role In: Kakori Conspiracy
• Azad was drawn into the Indian national
movement at a young age.
• He was betrayed to the police, who surrounded
him as soon as he entered the park. A gun battle
ensued, in which two police officers were
wounded, and Azad was fatally shot.
Conclusion
• In 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged to death for
it.
• In 1929, the HSRA also bombed a train carrying the then viceroy of
India, Lord Irwin.
• Azad was also killed by the police in a shootout at Allahabad in 1931.
• After 1931, most leaders of the party had been killed or imprisoned. The
party disintegrated as there was no leadership.
• After the death of many revolutionarist like Lala Lajpat Rai,
Bhagath singh, B K Dutt this association finally came to an end.
