ABSTRACT
This research study explores the factors influencing program course
selection among General Academic Strand (GAS) students in college. The study
uses a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative surveys and
qualitative interviews. Results show that GAS students' course selection is
influenced by personal interests, perceived career opportunities, parental
expectations, peer influence, and academic performance. Personal interests are
the primary motivator, while perceived career prospects and parental and peer
influence are significant. The study emphasizes the importance of career
guidance and counseling services in supporting GAS students in their program
course selection. This research contributes to existing literature on educational
and career decision-making processes, offering valuable insights into the unique
experiences and perspectives of GAS students in selecting their college majors.
INTRODUCTION
Graduating high school students are bound to choose which college
courses to pursue. They are faced with the dilemma of deciding on future career
paths. Some students in the twenty-first century are confused and tortured by the
prospect of not knowing which course to take. They are troubled by the prospect of
deciding on a path that will determine their future. The process of choosing a
course naturally begins at a young age (Maguire & Lay, 1981). Choosing a course
for school is an important decision that students must make. It is a decision that
has an impact on the student's future. However, it is still a difficult decision that
the students must make. When deciding on a path, there are numerous variables to
consider in order to make an informed decision.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. The objective of this research is to identify the aspect on taking the


General Academic Strand (GAS)

2. To identify the key factors that GAS student consider when


choosing their program courses.

3. To identify the challenges and barriers that GAS students


encounter during the course selection process.
METHODOLOGY
The design of this research was qualitative research. It was utilized to pick
up comprehension of basic reasons, suppositions, and inspirations. This qualitative
study will use the survey-questionnaire to gather information about the insights of
the General Academic Strand Students in Selecting Program Courses in College. The
participants of this research were selected from the institution "Malindig Institute
Foundation Inc.". Participants of this study were from grade 11 to 12 General
Academic Strand (GAS) Students. These participants were went through survey-
questionnaire. They were contemplate their career path giving the required data for
the study.

1. What is your reason for taking the General Academic Strand (GAS) in Senior
High School?

According to the GAS student, 62 % of them taking the General Academic


Strand (GAS) in Senior High School are not fully decided on what course they may
take or choose in college. While, 19% of the respondents answered that this strand
will prepare them in college, to explore and to achieve their personal goals and
interest. Moreover, 7% of the respondents answered that they have no choice and
available strand last year. However, 3% of the respondents answered that this strand
is related to the course they may take in college. And lastly, 8% of the respondents
answered that they are challenging their self and due to the influence of peer.

2. Did your GAS experience help you in making decision for taking your college
courses? How?

Through all of the respondents, 100% of them agree that thier GAS
experience helps them to make a decision for what are the courses that may take in
college. They explained that, this strand has an advantage when you are not fully
decided to the course you want to take in college. They added that they have a lot of
options when it comes in choosing a course in college. And it helps them to to
enhance their abilities and skills.

3. What are the challenges you encounter in planning a college course?
Based on the respondents, 46% of them encountered the challenges like
doubting when it comes in decision making for what course they may choose in
college. While, 8% of the respondents answered that the challenges they encountered
is to maintain their grades that has a big role to be qualified to the course they want.
Morever, 11% of the respondents answered that financial problem is the one of the
challenges they encountered when they are planning. However, 24% of the
respondents answered that they encounter a lot of challenges when they are
planning. And 4% of the respondent answered that they don't encounter challenges.
Lastly, 7% of the respondents did not answer the question.

4. How did you go searching the different courses in college that interested you?

31% of the respondents answered that the course they will choose in college
is based on their wants even at that time,based on their skills and they have a lot of
interest to pursue that career path. While, 8% of the respondents answered that the
way they search to choose that course are the number of subject they will study
when it comes in college. Moreover, 26% of the respondents answered that they
search or ask for their parents, friend, relatives and even ahead college students.
However, 8% of the respondents searching on online by using their gadgets to know
more about the course he/she want to take in college. And lastly, 27% of the
respondents did not answered the following questions.

5. What factor influenced your decision in choosing a program courses in
college?
Out of all respondents, 35% of them answered that the factors influenced
him/her decision to choose that particular course in college are their self-decision
and the intensive interested to that matter and no one force them to choose it.
Moreover, 27% of the respondents answered that the factors influenced them to
choose that are the decision of their parents, guardian, relatives, and family because
based on there interpretation that particular people guide and help them. However,
11% of the respondents answered that the factors influenced them are their ability,
goals, financial consideration, and their passion that may lead them to the goals that
want to achieve. Lastly, 27% of the respondents didn't answered that particular
question.

6. Did you consult with everyone (e.g., parents, guidance counselor, peers)
before deciding on a course? What role did they option play in your decision?

Through all the perception of the respondents, 77% of the respondents


answered that they consult with everyone especially their parents and relative
because they have a big role to that decision making and be a guide and supporter of
what their child want to be. Moreover, 19% of the particular respondents answered
that they didn't consult their parents or anyone else and they based on their own
choice and decision. And 4% of the respondents didn't answered the questions.

7. What would advise you can give to the future Senior High School students in
choosing their Senior High Strand?
As answered by the respondents, 46% suggest to the upcoming Senior High
School students that choose wisely what strand you want to and related to the course
that you will take in college. They may also added that you may evaluate which
strand align best with their goals and passion to avoid misleading action and be
seriously to the strand they may choose. However,42% of the particular respondents
give an advice to the upcoming Senior High School students that choose what are
their want, more interested to pursue and suited to the course you will take in
college. Additionally, 8% of the respondents recommended the General Academic
Strand (GAS) to choose of the upcoming Senior High School students. Lastly, 4% of
the respondents didn't answered the question.
CONCLUSION
Based on the gathered data, the insight gained from researching the
program course selection process of General Academic Strand (GAS) students in
college, highlights several important factors. Firstly, the majority of GAS students
consider their personal interests, skills, and aptitudes when choosing a program
course. They strive to align their academic pursuits with their passions to ensure a
fulfilling and rewarding college experience. Additionally, students take into account
future career prospects and market demand, aiming to select courses that offer
promising job opportunities and long-term stability. Furthermore, the influence of
family and peers plays a significant role in their decision-making process, as they
seek guidance and advice from trusted individuals.
CONCLUSION

Lastly, the availability of resources, such as scholarships, financial


assistance, and educational facilities, also factors into their choice of program
course. Overall, GAS students approach their program course selection with a
holistic perspective, considering personal interests, career prospects, social
influences, and available resources to make an informed decision that best suits their
aspirations and goals.
RECOMMENDATION
For Students
 As a student, selecting a course in college must need to reflect the interests and
passions. Think about the subjects that makes enjoyable and the areas of
knowledge needed. This will help to identify the potential fields of study that
align with personal preferences.

 Search the job market and career prospects for the program courses that needs to
be considered. Look into the demand for professionals in those fields, the
potential for growth and advancement, and the salary expectations. It's important
to choose a program course that offers promising career opportunities to ensure a
successful future.
RECOMMENDATION
For Teachers and Parents
 Encourage GAS students to engage in self-reflection and assess their interests,
strengths, and goals. This includes identifying their passions, skills, and areas of
curiosity. They can take career assessments or seek guidance from career
counselors to gain more clarity.

 Advise GAS students to conduct thorough research on various program courses


available in college. They should explore the course curricula, career
opportunities, job prospects, and potential industries related to those courses.
Encourage them to attend college fairs, visit college campuses, and speak with
current students and professionals in their areas of interest.
RECOMMENDATION
For Teachers and Parents
 Help GAS students understand their aptitude and abilities in specific subjects or
fields. If they excel in particular subjects such as mathematics, sciences, or
humanities, they can consider programs that build upon those strengths. It's
important for students to choose courses that align with their academic
capabilities and allow them to thrive.

 Encourage GAS students to seek guidance from teachers, mentors, parents, and
professionals in the field. They can provide valuable insights, share their
experiences, and offer advice based on their expertise. College counselors or
advisors can also provide assistance in selecting program courses that align with
the students' interests and aspirations.
RECOMMENDATION
For Teachers and Parents

 Guide GAS students to consider the future prospects and job market demand for
the program courses they are interested in. It's important for students to choose
courses that have potential job opportunities and growth in the industry.
However, they should also balance their interests and passions with the
practicality of the job market.
