SURGES

WHAT IS ELECTRICAL
SURGE?
- surges of electrical power that are higher than
normal.
- are brief overvoltage spikes or disturbances of a
power waveform that can damage, degrade, or
destroy electronic equipment within any home,
commercial building, or industrial and manufacturing
facilities. Transients can reach amplitudes of tens of
thousands of volts. Most equipment is designed to
handle minor variations in their standard operating
voltage. However, surges can be very damaging to
nearly all equipment.
HOW DO POWER
SURGE HAPPENS?

1.interruption in the flow of electricity followed by a

short
2. increased delivery of power is interrupted when
electricity is sent flowing back into the system
3.sudden increase of voltage is sent through a
power system from internal or external forces
4

WHAT CAUSES POWER SURGE?

• Electrical overload
• Faulty wiring
• Lightning strike
• Blackout
5

ELECTRICAL OVERLOAD
• can occur when too
much power is drawn
from a single circuit
• Power surges are
common following
electrical overloads
as the overwhelmed
single circuit can
receive a massive
current and
subsequent voltage
6

FAULTY WIRING

- is a potential
internal cause of
power surges,
which are more
likely to happen
with damaged or
exposed
electrical wires.
7

LIGHTNING STRIKE

- Lightning damage
usually results from a
direct strike on power
lines, which produces a
large voltage
- creates a tremendous
spike in voltage, which
in turn causes a
significant power surge
8

POWER OUTAGE/
BLACKOUT
- typically occur due to large-
scale power grid failure, and
while the lack of electricity
doesn’t usually cause any
issues, the return to
connection often can.
- this power surge has the
potential to damage any
plugged-in appliances and
HOW CAN POWER
SURGE BE PREVENTED?

- Internal surges can be prevented

by making sure your device are not
overloading circuit.
- external power surges are sometimes
unavoidable, you can still prevent
them from causing damage by
unplugging your devices and
appliances during severe storms.
HOW OFTEN DO POWER
SURGE HAPPENS?

- Power surges occur very often

- Homes can go years without
experiencing any significant surges,
which are typically caused by lightning
or faulty wiring.

SIGNS OF UPCOMING
POWER SURGE
• Flickering, • Smoke coming
buzzing or from outlets
dimming lights • Warm or
• Frayed wiring vibrating
• Discoloration or outlets
scorching of • Burning smell
outlets or areas or odd, sharp
surrounding odors near
wires outlets
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO
AFTER A POWER SURGE?
- Reset, unplug, and repower all
electronic devices. Do this before
resetting your circuit breakers if a
power outage has occurred after the
surge.
- Assess your home for any damages by
inspecting your appliances,
electronics, and power outlets.
- Check your HVAC system for
SURGE PROTECTORS
-surge protectors are devices that protect
electrical appliances from voltage spike
ARE SURGE PROTECTORS
NECESSARY?
-without a surge protector, a sudden voltage spike
and accompanying power surge could damage
your television, computer, or other plugged-in
device.

-power surge doesn’t completely ruin your

electronics but it can shorten their life’s pan, clear
stored data, or otherwise harm devices and
appliances.
TYPE’S SURGE PROTECTORS
Primary Type Surge Protectors
• type of surge protector that is installed where power
lines enter the building. These devices are extremely
important, as they can protect a building's inner wiring
from power surges, as well as appliances on the inside.

Secondary Type Surge Protectors

• They are small, and designed to be plugged into
electrical outlets. Secondary type surge protectors
are less powerful than primary surge protectors, but
also more convenient, portable, and easy to use.
Power Strips
• Power strips are a type of secondary surge protector.
A power strip can be plugged into any electrical
outlet. What makes power strips unique is the fact
that they come with multiple outlets that multiple
appliances can plug into.
• (However, not all power strip are surge protector,
and older power strips offer very little protection
Uninterrupted Power Supply Surge Protectors
from power surges.)
• This type of surge protector can come in many varieties
and styles. They can even be power strips, but are just
as likely to be a different type, such as one with only
one outlet.
HOW MUCH SURGE PROTECTION
DO YOU NEED?

-In determining how much protection you need, take

into consideration the value of the equipment you want
to protect.
(If your device has higher value, you should consider
higher joule ratings)
