this has got to the THE dumbest argument against self diagnosis I've ever heard "someone I don't know thought they had an anxiety disorder but they didn't so that's why no one should diagnose themselves with anything ever"

I diagnosed myself with ADD/ADHD, social anxiety disorder, depression, autism, Tourette's Syndrome, dyslexia, and executive dysfunction. and guess what?

I was right.

now does this suddenly mean whatever illness, disorder, or neurodivergency you think you might have you actually do? no.

I also thought I might have BPD and/or ASPD but I was led astray by symtomps of mental illnesses that I actually do have

self diagnosis is not something that is always right BUT it can lead you towards the right answer.

its not like professional diagnoses is always right either

Breaking: The government has agreed to rescind DHS and ICE rules barring international students attending online universities from staying in the U.S., per a hearing this afternoon in Harvard and MIT’s lawsuit against the agencies.

ICE will revert back to the guidance it issued in March that allows students taking online courses to reside in the United States on F-1 visas.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS - PLEASE SHARE!!!!

The only decent way to use white privilege

transcription of tweet thread (x)

A few months ago, I put myself between a man of color and two police officers who were harassing him. I was able to do this calmly and automatically because my mother trained me how to do it and I've spent years thinking about how to react if I had to use my whiteness this way.
The first thing I did: I pulled out my phone. I made sure the officers SAW me pull out my phone. I made sure they saw me turn on the voice recording.
The next thing: I calmly but firmly contradicted the officers. They insisted that they had gotten a call saying that this man was following people trying to get them to sign petitions. I told them I had been there for a half hour and he had not done anything of the sort.
The officers then tried to get me to be quiet. I said that I would be quiet, but that their reports were wrong, they were not listening to an eyewitness, and I was not moving from this spot until they left this man alone.
I then made a VERY BIG SHOW of taking down these officers names and badge numbers on my phone. I made sure the one next to me could see that I had texted this information to someone (my mom). I'm talking craning my neck to look at their badges, tilting my phone to show the screen
Then, I just fixed the one across with me with a stare. The bitchiest, don't fuck with me, I'm a femme white lady stare I could summon. And I did not stop staring or move from that spot until they left. And they did leave.
And then I gave the guy my phone number just in case and I called activist friends up in the community and made sure people were in the parking lot in case the cops came back so he could continue his petition work in peace.
You've got to be prepared. Keep your phone charged and in easy access. Know where your recording apps are. Who will you text badge numbers to so there's a record? Go through it in your head until it feels as natural as holding your keys between your fingers in a parking lot.
This is the work we must do. Those officers never would've touched me. I was never in danger for a moment. Use the enormous privilege you have for good if a time comes where you need to step up and be an actual shield.
And a final thing, remember: this is not about YOUR anger. Your anger has no place here. Your job is to be calm and never escalate a situation the officers are looking for a chance to escalate. Because you won't be the one they will escalate on. The person of color will be.
Your job is to remind the officers that white ladies can be a damn nuisance. And a lot of paperwork. And what if this one is related to somebody important? What if this one writes letters to the editor? She's texting someone my badge number, is this really worth it?

“My privilege will try to make me complicit by default.”

This really hit home, so I’m posting it for others to see.

[Image description: A photoset of a white vlogger in front of a bookshelf filled with DVDs, with the captions: "How is it my responsibility, or even my place, to apologize for the actions of my ancestors? Because they did it in my name. They did it for the prosperity of their descendants. But I don’t want any benefits conferred through slavery. I know it’s impossible for me to shed every single advantage that my ancestry affords me, but the least I could do is examine it. Be critical of it, to be as proactive as possible when it comes to the whole ‘not being complicit in historical atrocities’ thing. As a person of considerable privilege, I consider it my responsibility because my privilege will try to make me complicit by default.“]

It’s not that other nations don’t want to welcome Americans, they just can’t. The point of a passport is that a sovereign power vouches for its bearer, but America can’t vouch for the health of their citizens at all.
At the same time, you can’t trust Americans. Americans have poor hygiene (low masking rate) and at least 40% of the population can’t be trusted to even believe that COVID-19 exists, let alone to take it seriously. They’re likely to refuse testing, not report symptoms, break quarantine [3][4][5], and generally NOT follow rules. Americans have a toxic combination of ignorance and arrogance that makes them unwelcome travelers.
The most reliable projections are saying 200,000 dead and 50 million infected by election day in November. Even these projections struggle to account for completely irrational federal actions like denigrating masks, pushing to reopen early, and pushing students back into schools.

I think the funniest thing in the world is that orthodontists spend years putting ppls teeth into the “right” position and then after all work and money and grief they hand a 14 year old this horrible little retainer and they’re like “now you must wear this every night or else your teeth will go back” and this little 14 year old who has intimately lived through the strife and pain of all this work says “sure thing” and immediately loses it and never looks back

I don’t know a single adult who kept track of their post-braces retainer for more than 6 months

I’m so glad this wasn’t just me.

can we stop mocking people who hissed at others/bared their teeth as a warning in their childhood years? it’s not funny to call them freaks. i did that. because nothing else was EVER. respected. i could tell them to stop and they wouldn’t, literally only hissing/trying to bite got ANY freedom.

and guess what! i’m autistic. i didn’t learn the ‘proper’ ways to respond to things until much later. and a lot of kids who do that are neurodivergent and have NEVER been given respect. you mocking them isn’t gonna help shit all.

next time you think of it as cringey, maybe take a step back and think about what you’ve done to earn a reaction like that. because reactions like that are used to express fear and discomfort in animals. and you probably haven’t listened to ANY of the signs before that.

He just shit on your whole life, bitch.

Ok so for those of you who are also bad with following social cues and don’t get how he destroyed her

The gifs are from Project Runway, and the woman is a judge who is supposed to be offering useful critique regarding what the man has made. In the first gif, she insults the colour of the lace, and offers no useful advice, like a proper critique should. She’s supposed to be helping him, and is instead using her authority to insult him. In the second gif, he thanks her, which calls out the fact that she was supposed to give advice and didn’t, and that she is now in the wrong. In the third gif, she’s assumed that he’s arrogant, and attempts drives in the insult by pointing out she wasn’t complementing him, but instead sets herself up to get rekt. In the fourth gif, he points out that he didn’t take it as a compliment, thus subtly calling her out on the fact that she wasn’t delivering the critique she was supposed to give, and was instead being a bitch for the sake of being a bitch, and also making it clear that SHE KNEW she wasn’t doing her job. All in a way where he can’t be called on being rude to a judge.

The fifth gif is her realising just how much she’s fucked herself over.

Feminist fantasy is funny sometimes in how much it wants to shit on femininity for no goddamned reason. Like the whole “skirts are tools of the patriarchy made to cripple women into immobility, breeches are much better” thing.

(Let’s get it straight: Most societies over history have defaulted to skirts for everyone because you don’t have to take anything off to relieve yourself, you just have to squat down or lift your skirts and go. The main advantage of bifurcated garments is they make it easier to ride horses. But Western men wear pants so women wearing pants has become ~the universal symbol of gender equality~)

The book I’m reading literally just had its medievalesque heroine declare that peasant women wear breeches to work in the field because “You can’t swing a scythe in a skirt!”

Hm yes story checks out

peasant women definitely never did farm labour in skirts

skirts definitely mean you’re weak and fragile and can’t accomplish anything

skirts are definitely bad and will keep you from truly living life

no skirts for anyone, that’s definitely the moral of the story here

Now, a skirt that's too long will be harder to work in--skirts brushing the floor may look elegant, but is also a tripping hazard--but that is not a problem with skirts in general, it's a problem with that particular skirt not being suited to being worked in. Skirts are very practical. You can hike them up if you're hot or need more freedom to maneuver (this is called "girding your loins"). If you need to carry something, you can lift up your hem and make a pouch just like the person in yellow in the bottom picture above. If you need to handle something hot, a skirt generally has enough material you can hold it out from your body to use as a hot pad. (Tight skirts were only used by people who didn't need to work/move until the invention of elastic fabric.)

Long skirts were markers of class almost as much as gender. Both men and women in the European middle ages wore extravagantly long garments to indicate both “I’m so rich I can afford THIS MUCH fabric” and “I don’t walk in the mud, I pay servants to do that for me.”

Skirt hiking: Definitely a Thing. (Janet’s tied her kirtle green/above the knee and not below...)

it’s a long shot, but i really really really hope these social distancing, self-isolation protocols make people reconsider our justice system. people are struggling with staying in the comfort of their own homes for a few weeks, with all their shit, food delivery options and internet access. and of course, it IS a struggle, i am not diminishing that! but hopefully this sheds a light on just how inhumane it is to put someone in a cell for 25+ years. hopefully it hints at how solitary confinement is actual, literal torture. anyway abolish prisons.

also just as a note, the first federal prisoner died of covid19-related complications in the US recently: a man serving a 27-year sentence for nonviolent drug crimes.

based on the fact this post hasn’t even broken 300 notes and ive already gotten about 8 replies saying some variation of “but some people deserve state sanctioned torture!!!” i can see i was correct. even this experience won’t encourage compassion in everyone.

hey, this just in: the state shouldn’t be allowed to torture anyone. full stop. no matter what. the fact that this is considered too radical is uhhhh making me wanna go back to bed for 12 hours.
