I'd just like to clarify some things about Senator Cory Booker's marathon Senate speech in protest of the present administration and everything they are doing to the American people.
Senator Booker was NOT allowed to sit down, eat, or use the bathroom during his speech. Sitting or leaving the room to use the bathroom would be considered yielding the floor. Eating would have interfered with his speaking and the person who has the senate floor must continue to speak, except when listening to questions that they will then answer.
He only took occasional sips of water.
The person who previously held the record for longest speech on the Senate floor did have bathroom breaks and also did things like read from the encyclopedia.
Senator Booker did not do that. His speech was to point out the damage that this administration is doing and he stayed on that subject.
Senator Booker's speech did reach many people. It wasn't a silly stunt that was done so that he could take the record for longest speech. He wanted to show the country that democrats will do something to bring attention to the problems we are facing. That democrats are listening to them.
Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours and 4 minutes to "make good trouble."

He trained himself to give this speech by practicing and then implementing limits on food and water intake leading up to this. He cut out food for days, then cut out water the day before.
He then went to do an appearance on Maddow after yielding.

A concerning new study released Monday by the Federal Bureau of Prisons found that the nation’s poverty is growing faster than officials can build prisons. “The data shows that the number of people becoming destitute is currently outstripping our ability to set up new correctional facilities to imprison them,” said agency director Colette Peters, adding that unnecessary red tape, stringent regulations, and irksome health and safety standards are preventing the government from building more cells at the 11.5% growth rate necessary to match the rising number of people who need all their rights taken away.

“Like many who don’t have the socioeconomic privilege of really choosing their occupation, my father’s calling to work (read: hustle) was not about what he would do; it was about how he would do it, and by what means of selfhood. He says he wanted to be an attorney. But underneath this, he desires a safety and security for others that he did not sense as a child. He’s always been a wooer, but deeper still, he is a seer of people. He sees people in such a manner that they crave nearness to him. While he wanted to be an attorney, he never expected to be. He found his own way to live into these callings in him.
It can be difficult for me now to belong to rooms where people’s chief idea of discerning their calling is deciding what job they’ll choose. I’ve spent the past eight years working in Christian spaces within academia, often among people whose primary sense of calling is whether they were meant to be an engineer or a physicist. Defensively, I’ve found myself silently asking, Do you think you’re the only ones God has “called”? What of the vast majority of the world, which does not have the liberty of making such a discernment? Do the little Black boys running the streets not have callings? And I have never heard a college student tell me they “feel called” to work at McDonald’s. I remain very suspicious of this.
How boring to spend the whole of my vocational energy trying to figure out if I am choosing the right work. It is of much greater interest to me to talk about how I’m going to do the work with integrity. How am I going to protect dignity as I work? And what truths are calling out to me as I work?
You may think we are called to holy things that involve praying on your knees and going to church, and maybe we are. But I haven’t known God to regulate holiness. I think they injected it into every bit of everything. And I imagine they are very concerned with every element of life, including our work. And why wouldn’t they be?
As a writer, I have to think that God cares deeply about the words on this page. If it’s true that God made the whole world with the simple utterance of words, I think it’s very possible they would allow for a sacred power in mine, and that this would allow me to commune with the divine in some mysterious way, and even that the craft and work of writing would have something to say about how the world hangs together, something to say about the divine. I could say the same about nearly every job or scheme. About math. Look at the equations in the leaves and the shells: God was the first mathematician. About art. Look at that sunset, the curve of your lips: God was the first artist. And not only does God care about washing floors with excellence, Christians tell the story of a God who got on his hands and knees one night and washed filth from feet. Excellence may be a part of calling, but work itself is a meeting place for the divine as we experience a God who labors alongside us.
Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “Even if it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go on out and sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures; sweep streets like Handel and Beethoven composed music; sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry; sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.’ ” I wonder what God would say about my father’s penitentiary joints. Maybe he would’ve grabbed his face and told him to walk away, to take all the holy hustle stirring within him and use it for goodness and beauty in the world. Or maybe he was standing there over my father’s shoulder, telling him to quit playing and pack that thing right."

This book of highly accessible, personal, narrative theology has been a tremendous source of strength for me this year. I highly recommend everyone read it, even those who aren't Christian or religious at all. It's incredibly personal so that differences in religion matter less and less while human and divine connections matter more.

Cory Booker is reading letters from his constituents and tearing up repeatedly and it’s making me cry.
Yes -- in case anyone thought their calls and letters don't matter, Cory Booker has launched a protest marathon speech on the Senate floor and is reading letters directly from his constituents. Their voices and words gave him something to share on the Senate floor directly from the American people.
I intend to call my senators tomorrow and let them know that I've heard about this, and will be sending them letters as well so THEY can speak up for their constituents, because I expect them to speak up.
as of this morning, tues. 4/1/25, the speech is still going, with booker only stopping to take questions from democrats. here is a link to a NYT article about it, in which they quote him as saying:
“In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy and even our aspirations as a people for — from our highest offices — a sense of common decency…These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such.”
