in modern aus i see people having suibian and bichen as like pets, but what if it was just their laptops. wwx and jc have matching laptops and wen chao gets wen zhuliu to throw jc’s laptop in a river and wwx just like changes his password and wallpaper and is like dope i found your laptop. jc is like wow! i dont remember having so many memes on my laptop but my laptops back! lwj is on a quest to find out why wwx is doing his entire thesis in the notes app on his phone. wei ying come to the it department with me and all that.

I read it and am extremely squicked.

You do not know what squicks other people. "Squick" is not a category of elements, it is a description of a reaction.

Squick is literally a personal thing, you literally cannot know what squicks another person.

Same goes for triggers, by the way. You can't guarantee something is trigger-free because literally anything can be a trigger because the human brain can be weird like that sometimes.

No no, actually there's a perfect way to write an absolutely squick free fanfic! Plenty of writers do it successfully every day!

Okay, for anyone ACTUALLY unsure and wanting to learn: "squick" is an old fandom term. It means something that grosses you out or makes you deeply uncomfortable, but doesn't give you as intense negative reactions as a trigger. They are incredibly personal, though often times, just like with triggers, you can tag relatively common squicks.

For me, mpreg is a squick. It makes me deeply uncomfortable, but it doesn't send me into a panic spiral, a deep depression, or make me angry like reading about eye trauma does.

My cousins in Lannister, ‘squick’ didn’t even originate in fandom.

Also useful to note that ‘squick’ is specifically used to mean “this isn’t for me, personally” without adding a moral judgement to it. A simple easy way to say ‘no, thank you but you do you’. Unlike ‘cringe’ which has negative connotations. Squicks are also more than just uncomfortable.

Daddy kink makes me uncomfortable

First known usage of "squick" was in 1991. It's not some new term that was made up for this post.

It's a portmanteau of Squeamish and Ick.

Modern parlance would translate it as "A thing that gives me the ick"

For my name it was a nickname I was giving back in middleschool! One of our teacher had a system where we worked with 'wifi' eachtime we talked in class we lost a bar of the "wifi" (was a weird joke and we never held count on that) All the kids usually joked if they needed 'wifi' , they would borrow mine if they wanted to talk more. (I was incredibly shy in middle school, I only talked to like 3 people at school;^;)

They called me Ms. Wifi because of that. I just thought it would be funny if I put 'miss' instead of 'ms' because of my terrible actual wifi connection I have at home lol.

Actually, when I was creating this blog I wanted to use my Ao3 nickname (Caren_a) but I couldn't use the "_" and I got disappointed because I didn't want numbers and Carena and Caren-a were already taken 🫠

So I resuscitated an old nickname that simply comes from a French drink that I really like, the kir. But the "i" was lame and the name was too short. So yeah, that's how it became kyrkyr. End of the story.

My tumblr name is my Ao3 name bc I made a new tumblr for my Ao3. For some reason invisible girl came to mind because sometimes I’ve felt invisible in life plus I’ve been a secret lurker on Ao3 for YEARS and never had an account so it felt apropos. But then I thought of the incredibles and I was like I can’t do that. I have a tendency to replace the word “girl” with “squirrel” when I sing along to music so invisible squirrel it was.

My tumblr name is the same as my ao3 name, which I made in 2020. I had been listening to Lady by the Sea by Stephen Sanchez at the time and it was one of my favorites. But Ladybythesea was taken on ao3 already so I spelled it ladie which is an inside joke I have with my sisters. That ultimately gave me away when @invisiblesquirrel started reading shiita fanfic.

My Tumblr name comes from my AO3 name, and my username story isn't particularly thrilling. I wrote my first fanfic and then made the horrifying discovery that I would have to come up with a username to post it to AO3. I brainstormed several options. I was into My Hero Academia at the time, and I really like Kirishima, a.k.a. Red Riot (who took his name from Crimson Riot). So, I decided to substitute in my own favorite color, which is how I arrived at Green Riot as a pen name.

Looking back, I'm glad I didn't go with a name specific to the fandom I was writing for at the time, as I have hopped fandoms multiple times since then (while still adoring my original fandom!). I think i picked a pretty good nickname for myself, as I am, indeed, something of a riot.
