Some of the highest rates will be levied on smaller countries, with goods from the southern African nation of Lesotho facing 50%, while Vietnam and Cambodia will be hit with 46% and 49% respectively

Turns out all that was needed to fix the US economy was to tarrif all the imports from Lesotho and St Pierre & Miquelon flooding the country and crushing local industry [2 Apr 25]

i sure hope that i don't drop my sacred abyssal egg that delicately contains all of the entrapped evil of the previous era, that would be like rilly bad

me: catches you in my arms and twirls around with you giggling and laughing!!!

the sacred egg: completely safe on the desk in its ornate stand

mostly inevitable meteor: (hurtling towards my study at 320,000 km/h but just barely gets redirected by the subtle gravity of a passing blue moon)

the decorative egg swindler: (breaking into the neighbors instead because he sees my sister's old car parked in the drive way, they were lovers ten years ago but broke up on good terms)

airplane of stunning destiny: (runs out of fuel due to a clerical mistake and begins plumetting towards my house, but the grizzled pilot manages to pull a hairpin maneuver that allows the plane to perfectly coast for 3 more minutes before crashing & exploding in a nearby farmstead)

evil spirits of grand possession: (whispering wickedly) our powers are significantly weakened by the membrane of this egg but after ages of studying this prison, it is becoming evident that therw is a slight imperfection in the binding seal.. we may have just enough power to sway the will of small vermin

starving mouse of particular tastes: (scurries out of a crack in the wall, eyes lock onto the egg but gets entirely distracted by the scent of a bowl of cherries coming from the next room)

maid of utmost devotion: (sweeping around the desk with a feather duster and isnt paying full attention because it's watching us play out of the corner of its eyes, yet it doesn't make a mistake at all)

me: (suddenly hits the egg with a hammer because I'm bored)

many scps are smth like The Ghost That Is an Allegory for Trauma wherein the rules and mechanics of the ghost's existence never come up because it is an allegory for trauma & then all the discussion and secondary documents are people trying to taxonomize the ghost as a Triple S Code Atlantis Reality-X Phenomenon or whatever

many scps are smth like What If That Other Aspect of SCP Lore from 10 Years Ago was Less Racist & a certain type of reader acts like you've come to their house and shot them

I posted this in the tags but I’ll just post it explicitly here. Please go read SCP 6140 if you haven’t. It’s a fantastic commentary on the deeply orientalist nature of most SCPs surrounding the canon’s “Daevite” civilization. Hell, it outright uses the term orientalist in reference to that writing. I can’t recommend it enough

wait do y'all know about Dusty Springfield's Panamanian-Filipina ex-GF who wrote a shit ton of her songs or do I need to put yall on.

Do you enjoy Dusty Springfield's "No Stranger Am I"? Maybe a little bit of "Morning" to start your day right? How many of you are a fan of the theme song from the hit TV Show & Movie, What We Do In The Shadows? If your answer to any of these was "Hell yeah! She's talking about me!": You might already be a fan of Norma Tanega's work!

Talkin' Tanega

Norma Tanega was born to a Panamanian Mother & Filipino Father in California, 1939. A painter & singer-songwriter, Tanega was showcasing her paintings as early as the age of 16. After obtaining her Master's Degree in Fine Art's from CGU in 1962, Norma packed up her trusty guitar & her brilliant mind and took off to backpack across Europe before looking to settle down in what she called "the the center of the art world" in New York City. A outspoken opposer of the Vietnam War who largely performed in Greenwich with her guitar, it was on the East Coast that Norma was discovered during her tenure as a Camp counselor. Soon after, she released her first album "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" (1966). "You're Dead", a song about her struggle in the NYC Music Scene, was later popularized by its use as a theme song for What We Do In The Shadows.

No Stranger Am I

When the titular song of her first album grew popular in England, Norma was asked to perform it on television in 1966, leading to her introduction to Dusty Springfield, who was rehearsing her own performance for the program at the time. Enraptured by the hard work that went into Dusty's rehearsal, the two of them immediately hit it off in the dark moments between rehearsals. Nonetheless, Norma's promotional trip came to an end when she eventually had to return to New York City.

However, Dusty didn't stop there. After allegedly racking up her phone bill in order to call Norma at her New York home, Dusty eventually paid a visit to the US herself in order to see Norma once more. It was during this summer trip that many consider their relationship to have started, which culminated in Tanega moving back to England with Springfield, where the pair lived together for 5 years. It was over the course of this relationship that Norma Tanega ended up writing about several songs that showed up on Dusty's B-Sides, acting in a composing capacity as opposed to performing, including: "No Stranger Am I" (A Tanega Song covered by Springfield), "The Colour of Your Eyes", "Morning" & more, as well as several songs Norma has been uncredited for to this day. Their relationship lasted for nearly 6 years (many reporting its deterioration starting as early as 1970), before eventually falling apart upon Tanega's return to the United States.

Don't Think It Will Hurt If You Smile

During her time in the UK, Tanega was signed to an English Division of RCA records, where she produced her follow-up album, Don't Think It Will Hurt If You Smile (1971). The album, produced during her time with Dusty (who was alleged to be the subjects of many of the love songs), was often described as potentially largely appealing to Springfield's fan-base in both style & content. Despite being set up for success, Norma settled back in California after having to return for family matters, and was unable to promote her album, leading to an underwhelming reception at the time. She began teaching music & English as a Second Language in 1972 in California, with a reignited passion for painting and other artistic pursuits. However, her passion for music could never be fully abandoned, having performed with many artists for new projects throughout the 90's & 00's, including hybridVigor, Latin Lizards & Baboonz. Having rereleased her second album 40 years later, Norma had this to say about the albums title:

"The album title means just what it says and it is more important in 2011 with all the world in turmoil -- the Middle East revolutions -- the economic situation around the world and the terrible events in Japan. I believe in music, art, and love. Doesn't everyone?"

on the other end the copyright argument against ai art is just so bad. I hate how that's the most common one people use, like I'm sorry but an interpretation of copyright law that classifies images made with generative ai as "plagiarism" or "theft" would be a worst-case scenario for everyone except the walt disney corporation

arguments against ai art that are defensible positions:

  • the output usually does not look good and I want to stop seeing it
  • the ways in which the output can be "off" are often unsettling in a way that causes some people mental distress
  • a lot of ai art services charge money to access open-source software, so none of that money goes to the original developers who made the code their service is using
  • a lot of ai art services prioritize the output looking "nice" over the output actually matching what the user asked for, making them really hard to use for actually generating art
  • most ai art services are web-based things that run on one big centralized server that processes all the user requests, but this is really wasteful when anyone with a decent gaming pc could just run the software themself without contributing to how much water that central server needs for cooling
  • freelance artists and stock photographers don't make a lot of money so it's unethical to make a service that automates their jobs (the problem is capitalism)
  • if someone theoretically spends a long time prompt engineering to try to get it to generate a specific idea they have and can't get it to work and then they decide to commission a freelance artist instead, they might try to communicate their idea to the artist in the same way they used for the image generative ai, which for the freelance artist would be just about the most annoying possible client they could ever have to deal with

arguments against ai art that I regularly see people make:

  • art is supposed to be hard to create so the concept of a thing that generates images based on a simple prompt is inherently bad no matter what
  • ai art is bad for the environment (this is technically true, but it's also not a great argument. all internet-based services are bad for the environment to some extent. it is bad how much water big tech companies spend, but they were already doing that. this isn't a problem specific to ai art.)
  • it's unethical to download images from the internet without the copyright holders' permission (image generative ai models do not and cannot redistribute their training data. if they're made correctly it is not possible to extract any specific training image from the model, only images that look similar to images across the whole dataset. that's the whole point of the training process)
  • it's "theft" to make an image in an art style "owned" by someone else (imagine if this was actually a law. now imagine what a company like disney would do in this scenario. how would this turn out for small independent artists?)
  • recombining small pieces of individual images from the internet to make a new image is not sufficiently transformative and should be considered copyright infringement (this is not how ai image generation works, but even if it was this really should not be considered copyright infringement. you don't want youtube poops to be made illegal, do you?)

I don't really care if it's legally theft to take the work of an artist and then turn that into a "style" for your generative AI without the permission of said artist. Be it because they are dead or because they didn't consent. I just think it's a very depressing and gross thing to see. Especially as many artists struggle to make a living. And yeah the root cause is capitalism, but that doesn't exactly absolve AI from being the latest tool that capital is using to trample artists.

well. I do care if it's legally theft or not. it's important that it isn't. making an ai model of someone's art style without their permission is weird but it's not like, stealing. there isn't a thing that the artist had before that they now do not have. even though that can be an unethical thing to do, it's not "theft" in any meaningful sense

A lot of the worst behavior tme people exhibit towards tma people is compacted by ableism, the whole idea of a lolcow is to harm autistic/neurodivergent trans women until we freak out in one way or another so they can say we deserved the harassment

Traumatized in Ireland While my Family is Facing Death and Starvation in Gaza

Note: Vetted by:

1. @el-shab-hussein and @nabulsi # 151 on the spreadsheet of Vetted Gaza Fundraisers List]

I contemplate the happy faces of people around me here in Ireland and reminisce about the happy normal life my family and I had before the war. A life that turned into a distant memory for us and was replaced by an unending series of horrible nightmares.

Unlike my family in Gaza, people here have access to drinking water, all types of food, electricity, and a roof over their heads. Above all, they are safe, and I cannot help but wonder if they genuinely do appreciate these blessings in their lives enough.

People seem relaxed and laughing wholeheartedly around me in Ireland. I wish I could laugh too, but I am crushed way beyond recovery on the inside. I was evacuated by my Irish college after five months of living the horrors of war in Gaza. I hope you will never know what it feels like to live in constant fear and worry and be horrified by the most sickening and scary nightmares every single night while you are far away from your family in such circumstances.

When did my people in Gaza cease to be human beings worthy and deserving of a normal life? Has it become normal now for my family in Gaza to be starved and killed while the whole world is watching the genocide? If that is the case, then you will have to excuse me if I seek every avenue to bring them to Ireland and start a new normal life like all people here around me.

I was assured by the Irish Reugee Council (IRC) and lawyers in Ireland that there is hope I can reunite with my family in Ireland. In difficult times, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. For me and my family, you are literally our light and hope for a better life.
