Dragons of the Lost Meridian

@marlsbys-dragons / marlsbys-dragons.tumblr.com

You have entered a wretched hive of reblogs and villainy masquerading as a Writeblr/Worldbuilding blog —|||\\\///|||— My name is Meridian Morgan Marlsby, and that may or may not be true. You can call me Meridian, Meri or Grimsy for short. —|||\\\///|||— I am: Queer Nonbinary Gendernon-Newtonian Transgender Polyamorous Bisexual Demiromantic Saturnic An aspiring author A Worldbuilder A complete nerd A USAmerican (somewhat reluctantly) and (cause I know this can be important) 24 years old —|||\\\///|||— At this point I'm not really producing original stuff, but when I do it'll probably be about books, writing, various fandoms, tabletop gaming, video games some politics, Worldbuilding, and LGBTQAI+ stuff. I don't really vibe with DNIs, so I'll just say TERFs and MAPs fuck allllll the way off and leave it at that
Writeblr/Blog Re-Re-Re-Introduction

—<=|||\\\///|||=>—

Hello! First off, new blog name! I am now Marlsbys-Dragons! (Just uh, just imagine that there’s an ‘ between “by” and “s” lol). I was formerly Willow-Grimoire and before that MperialScribe, in case anyone is confused to see me in your followed/follower list.

And if you happen to catch this post in the maybe 5 minutes between me posting it and actually getting my name changed, congrats!

Now, for the actual introduction!

I am known, pseudonymously, as Meridian Morgan Marlsby. Please feel free to call me Meridian, Meri, or Grimsy (from the prior username above). You can refer to my blog description for other personal information! I’m making this intro basically because I want to try and get back/more into writing, and I hope getting all of my concepts together in one place right at the front of my blog, and showing I've got work done on them will encourage both me to write and other people to ask me questions!

I have a lot of different concepts, and I’m gonna try to get summaries of all of them on here, and eventually I’m also gonna try to get more in-depth posts for each of them. The original plan was to try and do kinda brief glimpses at my various stories, but goshdarn it I’m verbose and this has turned into a full-on brainstorming project, so expect summaries in a variety of lengths and styles below the cut, lol.

If you are interested in stories involving themes of queerness (especially nonbinary- and trans-ness), hard-ish magic, detailed Worldbuilding, unique (hopefully) creature design, political intrigue, genre-bending and (insert other thing that’s cool about my concepts), all of which are 100% unwritten (no, really, I’m serious, I haven’t written anything other than Worldbuilding notes, aren’t you excited!?) read on below!

*goes to Coachella in a white linen suit like an antebellum lawyer, sweating profusely and dabbing at my forehead with a handkerchief* now, I’m no fancy scientist, but would you folk know where a simple gentleman such as myself could obtain some acid? Now, I’m no big city lawyer, but could any of you fine youths point a country boy such as myself in the direction of some fucking acid?

never forget that it is more profitable for capitalism if you perform kindness rather than being genuinely kind

Ooooh.

Okay, so.

I'm not quite sure what Josie means here. I get the vibe, I think but.

I think that kindness, and goodness, are not attributes people have but endeavours people undertake.

No person is Good or Kind; rather people consistently practice kindness and goodness. Moment to moment, day to day, one has to choose to do the good thing, the kind thing, even when one is tired and angry and miserable.

And the thing is, sometimes you will fail.

Sometimes you will do the cruel thing instead of the kind thing, because you were tired and angry and miserable, and the challenge of turning the other cheek, of offering your hand, of holding your tongue, was simply too fucking great for you to meet that day.

Because you are not a Kind Person. Nobody is. That's not how this works. You are, I hope, a person who tries to do kind things, and good things, and if you are both diligent and fortunate, then perhaps you succeed most of the time. And people will think of you as being kind and good, because that is how you behave.

But that doesn't make you kind like it's a trait like being short or thin or bald, it just makes you a person who does kind things more often than not.

sort of?

the main thing i was thinking is that capitalism thrives on the working class being isolated. capitalism doesn’t want us to have third spaces because they don’t want us to have community because community leads to solidarity and solidarity empowers the dissenting.

capitalism wants kindness to be performative because it should be just enough to maintain the social contracts of a well functioning society but shallow enough that community cannot form.

think about the relationships that people have with their neighbors in an apartment complex. those aren’t communities.

think about the relationships that people have with the corporate co-workers. corporations thrive on trying to force third spaces in work environments through things like having happy hours and promoting “company culture”.

capitalism doesn’t want you to have any kind of community if you can’t afford it.

real community requires genuine kindness and that’s why capitalism doesn’t want us to be genuinely kind.

Nobody seems inclined to shut the fuck up on their own so I made this handy graphic that I might just start rudely appending to my random life update posts. Everyone feel free to use it on your own posts.

Fucking wild to be teaching about Rosa Parks at the same time as a trans woman in Florida does an act of civil disobedience to use a women's restroom in the state capitol

As far as I know, she is the first woman arrested bc of this law. The law requires that the trans person be warned to leave the bathroom by a state official, and then if they stay they are guilty of trespassing after a warning.

So like, me, my gf, others just piss and nobody asks or tells, but this young woman sent a statement about the law to over 100 FL lawmakers so they would know she was coming, the cops were ready for her, she brought a reporter and went in anyway and spent the night in a men's jail. She is out on bail, and is hoping this will inspire change of the law. But if found guilty, and the law is upheld as constitutional, then she could spend up to 60 days in a mens county jail.

hey what's up with the "!" in fandoms? i.e. "fat!" just curious thaxxx

I have asked this myself in the past and never gotten an answer.

Maybe today will be the day we are both finally enlightened.

woodsgotweird said: man i just jumped on the bandwagon because i am a sheep. i have no idea where it came from and i ask myself this question all the time

Maybe someone made a typo and it just got out of hand?

I kinda feel like panic!at the disco started the whole exclamation point thing and then it caught on around the internet, but maybe they got it from somewhere else, IDK.

The world may never know…

Maybe it’s something mathematical?

I’ve been in fandom since *about* when Panic! formed and the adjective!character thing was already going strong, pretty sure it predates them.

It’s a way of referring to particular variations of (usually) a character — dark! Will, junkie!Sherlock, et cetera. I have suspected for a while that it originated from some archive system that didn’t accommodate spaces in its tags, so to make common interpretations/versions of the characters searchable, people started jamming the words together with an infix.

(Lately I’ve seen people use the ! notation when the suffix isn’t the full name, but is actually the second part of a common fandom portmanteau. This bothers me a lot but it happens, so it’s worth being aware of.)

“Bang paths” (! is called a “bang"when not used for emphasis) were the first addressing scheme for email, before modern automatic routing was set up. If you wanted to write a mail to the Steve here in Engineering, you just wrote “Steve” in the to: field and the computer sent it to the local account named Steve. But if it was Steve over in the physics department you wrote it to phys!Steve; the computer sent it to the “phys” computer, which sent it in turn to the Steve account. To get Steve in the Art department over at NYU, you wrote NYU!art!Steve- your computer sends it to the NYU gateway computer sends it to the “art” computer sends it to the Steve account. Etc. (“Bang"s were just chosen because they were on the keyboard, not too visually noisy, and not used for a huge lot already).

It became pretty standard jargon, as I understand, to disambiguate when writing to other humans. First phys!Steve vs the Steve right next to you, just like you were taking to the machine, then getting looser (as jargon does) to reference, say, bearded!Steve vs bald!Steve.

So I’m guessing alternate character version tags probably came from that.

100% born of bang paths. fandom has be floating around on the internet for six seconds longer than there has been an internet so early users just used the jargon associated with the medium and since it’s a handy shorthand, we keep it.

Absolutely from the bang paths–saw people using them in early online fandom back in 1993 for referring to things.

I had been doing it for a very, very long time but never actually knew the actual name for it. This is exciting! I like learning things.

jan smit looking at jan smit looking at rocks

fyi, Jan Smit is the paleontologist who originally noticed high levels of iridium in the Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary sediments (now known as the K-Pg Boundary) and hypothesized the Giant Asteroid Impact Theory as the reason dinosaurs went extinct!

and as far as I know he's still out there, looking at rocks.

hey op good news

Hey if you own a business I need you to repeat after me:

  • I will not let my web developer manage my domain registration.
  • My domains are my responsibility and they cannot be handed to a contractor.
  • If I do not control my domains, I do not control my website.
  • If my domain is paid for on somebody else's credit card, it isn't really mine.
  • I will read every contract carefully and abide by its terms.
  • If the terms of a contract are not agreeable to me, I will amend them until the contractor and I both agree to and are aware of the terms.
  • I will pay my contractors in a timely fashion.
  • I will not burn bridges with my contractors.
  • I will pay for domain registration myself, and will never grant anyone else complete control over my domain.
  • I will not let my web developer manage my domain registration.

If you need your car fixed and you call a mechanic you are mechanically illiterate, any idiot can drop a gas tank.

If you need your clothes altered and you call a tailor you are textilely illiterate, any idiot can take in a sleeve.

If you need a your bathroom fixed and you call a plumber, you are piping illiterate, any idiot can replace a toilet.

If you want a lasagna and you don't make it from scratch you are culinarily illiterate, any idiot can make a lasagna.

If you need to pay your taxes and you have to use an app you are financially illiterate, any idiot can fill out a form.

If you need a logo created and you don't make it yourself you are graphically illiterate, any idiot can draw a picture.

Shut the fuck up. People are busy. Not everyone has the time or inclination to become "technically literate" enough to build and maintain a website. I work with dozens of people more technically literate than I am, and not a single one of them went beyond wordpress/shopify/a developer to set up their own websites.

You are not an idiot if you choose not to cultivate specific skills or if some skills are not a priority in your life.

"any idiot can set up cpanel" lmao I just know this person watched one (1) YouTube tutorial and is now serving a static site from an unsecured public s3 bucket that's somehow still vulnerable to Heartbleed.

If you're talking about cpanel you are not "technically literate", you're using a nice clickops UI that a technically literate person built for you. There's no shame in that but don't condescend to other people about it.

And yeah, even learning how to register a domain and set up cpanel takes a level of expertise that most people don't have, and at that point you've learned just enough to get you and your unlucky colleagues in big trouble with an accidental misconfiguration. Messing around with a little personal project is different from building something that serves customer needs securely.

This is a fantastic point because YES, most people can learn to do basic car maintenance, but you don't want the person flying the airplane and the person FIXING the airplane to be the same person because you want to make sure that both of those jobs are being done by experts.

Creating secure websites for enterprise environments, or for professions subject to a high degree of privacy regulation that handle sensitive data, or that will be storing customer information is something that requires expertise beyond what you can pick up by tinkering and are a fantastic reason to call a professional to do the job for you.

(But you should still be the one that your domain is registered to.)

The Porn Guy aka The Nice Guy aka The Canadian side of Pornhub aka SFW Pornhub’s REAL NAME is Ryan Creamer. No joke, that is legit his real name.

Also this.

Which led him to this.

Bless this man.

I can appreciate him and the service he’s providing independently of the shitshow that is the platform he’s hosted on.

He remains just as funny and weird on other platforms dw

By the way, the topic he was presenting was

‘Can I get an Honorary Degree if I Just Ask Really Nicely’

What’s the answer?

The answer is “no”, with the side note of “when asking a list of random colleges for an honorary degree, be sure to research them better, because a white guy who got famous on pornhub accidentally asking a black women’s college to give him a degree for doing nothing gets awkward really fast”

yknow what would be a fucked up phone feature

No, I don't. Please, proceed.

if whenever you plugged it in you had to manually enable charging mode and there was no built in way to automate it

That would be fucked up.

yknow what would be more fucked up

Football field full of viruses.

Abraham Lincoln teeth sculpture.

Really big vampire.

Inside-out Sweden.

if they added automatic charging mode but paywalled it

Yeah that's pretty fucked up.

Weakling. You will not survive the winter.
