“Car picnic?” Bucky tilted his head, “then you just have to sit and enjoy the view.”

“I’ll try,” Clint repeated, biting his lip and watching Bucky as he started making a simple pancake batter.

“Hey,” Bucky said, offering a soft smile with the bowl and whisk in his hands. “I promise we’ll do something nice tonight, okay? Even if you don’t feel up to going out.”

So he picked a DVD at random, shoved his coffee table over, and stood in the newly cleared space, ready to huff and puff and sweat.
And then the phone rang, the landline in the kitchen that he insisted on having because cell phones could be unreliable—and he'd been right, look at what had happened with the Owl recently. He hit stop on the remote so fast it was a wonder the DVD player didn't spit the DVD out at him for his enthusiasm.

14 What makes you happiest? New fic comments, kudos, bookmarks, user subscribers, story subscribers, or Tumblr asks?

Oh, comments by far! Probably Tumblr asks would be equal, but I've never gotten one of those out of the blue. Bookmarks and subscriptions, I rarely notice because I don't look at my stats page much, though I will sometimes do a bookmark search to see new ones. Kudos are nice, but I will be honest that they don't stick in my brain much, whereas comments are much more memorable overall.

15 Does anyone you know in real life know you write fanfiction?

At least two people! One is an old friend who is also into fanfic as a hobby. (Hi, @iapetusneume !) And the other is my spouse. I decided pretty early on that it would be hard to hide my reading/writing fanfic from him, and when I told him, he was just kind of like, "Yes, I knew this. I am on the internet enough to recognize AO3's logo on your phone screen." So, uh, I definitely correctly called my inability to hide it. XD

23 What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

Ohhh, Matt and Foggy on a game show. I know most of the time this sort of idea in fics is for dating game shows like The Bachelor or something, but I think a more traditional game show would be a lot of fun. If I wanted to do something very shippy, I'd have Matt and Foggy go on The Newlywed Game where they aren't married but are pretending they are because they want to win the prize. In this one, I imagine the prize is like some office equipment or something that they need but can't afford, similar to how back in the day game shows used to offer like a washer and dryer set as a prize.

If I wanted something less explicitly shippy but still with both of them, I'd have them go on a show as a pair, like how Wheel of Fortune will do Best Friends Week. And my ideas for just one of them are things like hotshot lawyer 616!Matt getting to do any sort of celebrity show, maybe Match Game or Celebrity Jeopardy!.

I think there's just a lot of fun ways you could take them on a game show!

2 (Which of your fics is your pride and joy?)

Has to be I Love You So Matcha. I put a lot of effort into making it something that could (I hope) slide into canon and developing my personal headcanons for Matt + tea and bridging the gap between Matt and Foggy being friends for years to them initiating a romantic relationship, and I'm going to toot my own horn because I think I accomplished what I set out to do very neatly.

17 (What is something you recently felt proud of in your writing?)

I've figured out some things in many of my WIPs recently for how I want to proceed, which is always a good feeling, haha.

19 (How do you get over writer’s block?)

Mostly, I try working on something else for a while. And when I go back to the fic I've been struggling with, if enough time has passed, then I've forgotten a lot of what I've written and can read with new eyes and things seem less difficult to tackle, LOL.

5 What’s something you learned while researching a fic?

Hmm, have I ever learned something while researching a fic? (I joke, I'm sure I have but can I remember anything? LOL, no.) I know I'll try to look up little details like what would a radio from the 1950s look like or what sorts of liquid level indicators are out there. And there's some things that I've tried to look up that have defied me, like what would getting a law degree look like in 1960.

10 Is there a character or ship you'd love to write for, but haven't yet?

Anything with Mike! I don't know who specifically, but I'd love to write some Mike fic(s) at some point if I can get the ideas to coalesce into something coherent.

31 What fic meant the most to you to write?

Maybe Why They Changed It I Can't Say because at that point in time I really felt like I had lost my ability to write. Not that I didn't have ideas, but I rarely could bring myself to put them down and even when I did start something, I couldn't take myself past the first paragraph. (All my works written between 2008-2022 were written for the Yuletide fic exchange, so the impetus to write those was because of the event rather than my own intrinsic motivation. And I do love those fics and what I wrote! But they are also a sign of how there was nothing I finished for myself in those 15 years.)

Anywho, which is all to say that "Why They Changed It I Can't Say" is very dear to my heart because it marks the start of me re-finding my own love for writing.

Hmmm, all of my WIPs that I feel like I'm making good progress on are bringing me joy, haha. I worked on the aromantic!Matt fic, the Foggy/Matt/Kirsten fic, my Mushishi AU, and an oddball little thing I started about a clockwork Daredevil. All are going well!

The ones making me look in dread are the ones I haven't worked on recently, LOL. Maybe my podfic for "I Thought You Were Blind" which I haven't recorded anything for in a hot minute because I've not had the voice/energy and now I'm like. I should get back to it, but what if I misjudge my voice/energy readiness and then it ends up being a bad time.

Ooh, the Foggy/Matt/Kirsten fic maybe. I thought of a detail I really wanted to include somewhere and found a place to add it in that works. Also writing happy Matt/Kirsten is a lot of fun in general. They're cute! They flirt! They enjoy each other's company! They're both absolutely smitten!

WIP Folder Game

  • Aro!Matt: A 7 things fic (5+1+1) about Matt being aromantic and him and Foggy becoming qpr partners.
  • Beauty and the Beast Season 1 AU: An AU set during season 1 where a spell turns Matt into a Beast and also Foggy gets to know Daredevil and he can't figure out why he can't help either of these men turn back into a human.
  • Arranged Dragon Marriage fic: Foggy and Matt are dragons, and dragons have a marriage arranged for them by the government when they become an adult. This fic is mostly just covering the first meeting/wedding.
  • Inside Baseball fic: I really think Matt should be a Sports Guy, aka conversant in NY sporting news, and the idea behind this is to take like specific comic issues and add offpage moments that are Matt and/or Foggy and the relevant baseball news for the day but in context of their evolving history? I am probably explaining this poorly, but I will be excited if I ever manage to pull it off.
  • The One Where Jack Gets the Bob Fraser Treatment: I have long wished that "Character Gets the Bob Fraser Treatment" was an actual pan-fandom trope and not, like, something that exists only in my head. Character that is dead in canon comes back as a ghost to offer commentary/sass the main character: it could be soooo good. This was me trying to turn my trope into reality, but it's also gotten angstier than I expected. (Thanks, Matt.)
  • Moirails fic: In a world where moirails exist as a concept but not the other Homestuck romances because I didn't feel like dealing with that, Foggy and Matt try to be moirails but fail a lot until they work stuff out.
  • Mushishi AU: AU where the accident gave Matt the ability to sense mushi, and the Hand and the Chaste are fighting over mushi rather than demons. Slightly derailed at the moment because I realized I really want this to be Elektra's story, but I can't figure out where to start or where I want to go. Still love it lots.
  • The Noir fic: Technically a crossover with Nero Wolfe because really, there should be more DD/Nero Wolfe crossovers and especially DD Noir/Nero Wolfe crossovers. And this way I get to insert Fritz/Saul as a ship, a.k.a. my beloved ship that no one else ships.
  • Runner!Marci fic: I want it to be like Marci-centric post DD Season 3 with her finding joy in something that had been tainted for her? I have an idea and a Vision, it's the getting there that will be interesting.
  • Sculptor Fic: Despite the name, the sculpting's mostly a MacGuffin. But I really love this one because I want to write my own happy ending for Foggy, Matt, and Kirsten at the end of Waid's run.
  • The Bus fic: This one's silly! Matt takes the bus! He has a bad time! But with lots of silly shenanigans like giant crabs and outer space and going to bus-jail.

I have done many things in the past week and a half. :3c

I have written two double drabbles, Trick-or-Treat and The Beauty Part, both Foggy/Matt with podfic versions also available.

The round robin fic I wrote with many pals Every Sunday Forever (If That's What It Takes) has been completed, cleaned up, and posted! \o/ Aromantic Foggy&Matt goodness as they're stuck in a time loop. (Pals :D @42donotpanic @auofgoldandfantasies Kimmy Marv @fanboy-sloth @stripedscribe )

I also did much podding (for me) during the @voiceteam Mystery Box event!

Podfic of Cornflower Blue by @inkforhumanhands a very nifty Fisk/Wesley fic going into Wesley's backstory.

Podfic of Safer Up High by @42donotpanic a Clint/Phil fic dealing with major character death and suicide that is very moving and that Panic read and to which I added music. The challenge was to add sfx or music that did not fit the tone of the original work, and I had a ton of fun working with Panic to put together something that is a bit different from my usual.

Podfic of Every Sunday Forever (If That's What It Takes) Yes! Me, @42donotpanic @stripedscribe and @ravenmold round-podded the round robin fic! I am super proud of both our fic and our pod. :D :D :D

Oral Not!Fic (Redacted) Radio Station which was a massive effort headed by @42donotpanic and has something like 15 contributors, of which I got to voice Host 1. Very fun! Come check out all the latest superhero news in our radio show!

So, yah, 3 fics (1 much much longer than the other 2, haha) and 6 audio fanworks I was involved in. Busy start to the beginning of 2025, but also lots of chaotic fun! ^^

you know that tumblr post that goes "I don't want my fantasy media to be realistic, I want it to be convincing"?

I think a corollary to this is I don't want my fandom experiences to be unique, I want them to be sincere

That's why I enjoy reading the same tropes over and over again. Those authors are writing those stories from a genuine love of both the tropes and the characters.

It's why I enjoy 17 gif sets about the same 3-second interaction on screen. Each one of those sets was pulled and recoloured and captioned and adjusted because each one of those gif makers wanted to capture that moment and celebrate it.

It's why every "I'm glad you enjoyed it" reply makes me smile when I get one on a comment I left. Because I know replying to comments is hard and kind of awkward, but I also know that the author really *is* glad and I'm happy that I could let them know I enjoyed their work.

I love things that are new, sure. But I also love things that have been done a million times already because I know the person doing it loves that thing too. I love the love they're showing. I love the genuine joy and celebration and community it fills me with.

Writing Reflection

In general, I'm super happy with my year. I wrote several things, I like them all, I feel like I have some really fun stuff in this year's catalogue. For next year, I want to try to continue on how I have been doing. I'd like to do some creative work daily, whether that's fic writing or podficcing, but beyond that I want to give myself the freedom to explore where I want to go. This is supposed to be my fun hobby, and I don't want to stress myself out by telling myself I have to do this or I have to work on that.

The Cards Without Fear: Now Available for Pre-Order!

The Cards Without Fear is a collaborative fan project put together by the "Avocados in Love" Discord, who wanted to create a unique set of trading cards that gave all their favorite characters their due.
