Perhaps this is a weakness of the pure deathmatch model. If instead the robots had some nominal task to complete (e.g. there are a number of boxes in the arena and you win if you can move them all to your side) but where violently disabling the opponent was an encouraged way to further that goal maybe you would get more diverse strategies.
