Imo, one of the MOST rebellious things Peeta ever did was camouflage himself during the first Games. From the beginning, that boy knew the Capitol's agenda (see: the convo on the roof) and was determined not to serve it. He also knew he was too injured to be of further help to Katniss. There could only be one victor, and his days (hours?) were numbered. So what did Peeta Mellark, male tribute from District 12, do in his final moments? He removed himself from the plot. He dug himself an unmarked grave and laid in it. He told the Capitol, "You can take my life but you CANNOT have my death." He literally and figuratively faded into the background of the Games. By camouflaging himself into invisibility, Peeta ensured his death would be the least cinematic in Hunger Games history, thus eliminating any use the Capitol could have had for it. In a way, he beat the Powers that Be at their own game. No wonder Seneca had no choice but to cheat change the rules.

"So that day, in music assembly, the teacher asked who knew the valley song. Your hand shot right up in the air. She stood you up on a stool and had you sing it for us. And I swear, every bird outside the windows fell silent. [...] And right when your song ended, I knew—just like your mother—I was a goner.” [Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins]
i love katniss and peeta so much. as individuals. as a couple. i love them an abnormal amount 😭
dandelions deserve more respect than they get
you say “weeds” I say “widespread non-native edible plant and early-blooming pollinator resource that is not considered invasive because it behaves politely and does not cause deleterious ecological consequences”
there is something special about a baker's son who grew up in a household where fresh meat was a rarity who fell in love with a hunter's daughter who could rarely afford the bakery's bread.
and now they are in love. after the war. with plenty of time to hunt. and plenty of time to bake.
so that they can spoil each other silly.
Still not over how Katniss is supposed to be helping Peeta with his confusion over their relationship and after telling him she thinks of him as an ally she goes on to imply that she’s slept in the same bed as him often enough to know how he likes the windows open, eaten breakfast with him often enough to know how he likes his tea, and watched him get dressed enough to know how he does his shoelaces up.
And okay, there’s a less intimate way to interpret her knowing all those things, but does he know that???
Something about being seen and known … 😭
Now with the new perspective from Sunset on the Reaping, Katniss and Peeta really were driving Snow insane with how they were acting during the Quell. Peeta with the volunteering to die protecting Katniss and saying they were married with a baby, Katniss freaking out when Peeta hit the force field and saying she needed him. It’s like two birds taking turns pecking someone into a spiral.
Peeta on the beach telling Katniss to take everything from him including his life so she could go home to 12 and to her family and Katniss saying she didn't want any of that if it meant living without him and them kissing passionately for several minutes meanwhile Snow's watching this from his bedroom like
katniss’ father being named burdock when burdock and dandelions are in the same plant family and she connects peeta with dandelions and to her it symbolizes hope and safety 🥹🥹🥹 i can’t do this anymore
i find it really interesting that the only female characters in the hunger games books who receive no semblance of sympathy from the narrative at all are coin and... mrs. mellark.
katniss feels pity for both glimmer and clove when they die. she realizes that enobaria deserves to live on along with the rest of the surviving victors.
this just shows how much katniss adores peeta. she's beyond compassionate, even to people who have tried to kill her, but hurting peeta is where she draws the line. hurting peeta makes you as bad as a cold wannabe dictator. so real, so true.
something about Katniss and Peeta being meant to be enemies, meant to kill each other, and though they subvert the expectation of the Games, the obligation to kill each other is still there; the berries are an unspoken pact yet to be broken or fulfilled; no one else is allowed to take their lives except the other, in a strange, twisted way; Peeta is faced with the choice of what to do about the starving girl by his house and chooses not to let her die, when he could have; Katniss verbally forbids Peeta to die in the cave; Katniss feels she must stab Peeta with the syringe to prevent him being taken by the Capitol; even Snow and Coin seem to recognize this, sending Peeta to try and kill Katniss; Boggs commands Katniss to kill Peeta; Katniss won’t let Peeta slip into his own mind, but opens herself up to him killing her in the sewers; he refuses to let her take the nightlock pill; and she waits for him after the war; there is an implicit lack of permission to die; there is an implicit holding of the other’s life in your hands; and what’s even more delicious is that Coriolanus and Lucy Gray have no such unspoken obligation of circumstance; his job is to keep her alive, and yet he tries (succeeds?) to kill her, and does eradicate her memory … it’s so compelling
some everlark + haymitch + buttercup silliness i drew for a friend's bday!
guys i can't. i talk about the cave scene being bad (and it is) but occasionally i remember you love me. real not real. scene and oh my god. what the actual fuck where they thinking. no, what the fuck was going on that set. the book is very explicit about passion and hunger in that moment. it doesn't need to be a sex scene (but it is) but to not even show them kissing???? anything other than that awful awful awful limp bored awkward cuddling (should i even call it cuddling??? they are just lying there waiting to die) that implies literally nothing passionate about the nature of their relationship.
On the occasion of the dandelions beginning to erupt once again in my area, I’m posting the last two in my series of Art Nouveau designs (here are the others), this one by M.P. Verneuil, from Plants and Their Application to Ornament (1895-96).
everlark has the silliest “we’re trying so hard to be a situationship but unfortunately we have been symbolically married since we were eleven” thing going on
katniss, probably: sure, we sleep in the same bed and kiss and i would rather die than live without him, but like that’s not even that big of a deal. best friends do that all the time… i mean, not me and my best friend, but in general, y’know
"I don't wanna bother you"
Have you considered that this is how your presence feels?
