What's being called a "social credit score" is in reality a variety of rewards programs run by banks and private companies, not unlike the apps you can use in the US to scan your receipts to get cash back at gas stations. A handful of city governments experimented with integrating such rewards programs at a city-wide level, but none of these plans really went anywhere and none have expanded beyond that. There is no nationwide social credit score in China, period.
The US does have a credit score, that's absolutely vital for owning a home or a car. It's just based on your ability to stay in debt. Much better.
