i really do love those military jackets with embroidery that resembles a gilded ribcage they serve sooooooo much thanatological cunt it's unreal. the memento mori of it all. the bastardised martyrdom. the self-fulfilling prophecy of dressing yourself in silver and gold evoking the final, fragile shield between the most vital, vulnerable parts of you and annihilation, just to go to a place where the objective is to hack it to pieces as cruelly and efficiently as possible until you resemble nothing more than ground meat trodden into the dust you came from. fuck the military for real and forever but they went harder with horrifically ironic self-deceiving propaganda than anyone ever has or will. give it up for the old lie everyone!

On any other expedition, Hekarro would have leapt at the chance for such exotic hunts from the outset; but this was not any other expedition, and with such a large, multi-clan force, he’d felt it prudent to stay and unite the soldiers instead of unnecessarily chasing after machines. The cave-in, and its aftermath, complicate things.

Comet has a lot of the bite taken out of war and peace's misogyny (a gender politics of hélène kuragina "reclaiming" slut, for example) and I think if I were putting it on I could easily take advantage of that to make Anatole a dyke. Anatole being a man and having that privilege is REALLY important in WAP but I think in the comet fantasia space the Natasha gay awakening plotline that lesbian Anatole would create would be worth it and fairly coherent within comets framing of Anatole as like. Handsome but somewhat ostracized from society + why he cannot legitimately/legally marry natasha. Comet's version of hélène paves a lot of the way for this being "the queen of society" but also. Like that. Indicating a pretty fast and loose engagement with sexual gender politics. Which is just one of comet's quirks. Dolokhov is a dyke in this too btw but that's just bc I think it's hot.
