What fascinates me is how art and literature become the philosopher’s stone that alchemizes passing moments into timeless monuments — crystallizing the ephemeral into the eternal, turning the personal into the universal.
a lover dancing for her beloved amidst the hemlocks could have flickered and died with the passing of both of them, had it not been crystallized and immortalized through the labors of a loving hand and an obedient pen
From a letter to Christopher Tolkien 11 July 1972 (by J. R. R. Tolkien) I have at last got busy about Mummy's grave. …. The inscription I should like is: EDITH MARY TOLKIEN 1889-1971 Lúthien : brief and jejune, except for Lúthien, which says for me more than a multitude of words: for she was (and knew she was) my Lúthien. July 13. Say what you feel, without reservation, about this addition. I began this under the stress of great emotion & regret – and in any case I am afflicted from time to time (increasingly) with an overwhelming sense of bereavement. I need advice. Yet I hope none of my children will feel that the use of this name is a sentimental fancy. It is at any rate not comparable to the quoting of pet names in obituaries. I never called Edith Lúthien – but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief pan of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing – and dance. But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos.

Willem Arondéus (22 August 1894 – 1 July 1943) was a Dutch artist and author who joined the Dutch anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II. He participated in the bombing of the Amsterdam public records office to hinder the Nazi German effort to identify Dutch Jews and others wanted by the Gestapo. Arondéus was caught and executed soon after his arrest. Yad Vashem recognized Arondéus as Righteous Among the Nations.
Their attack, which took place on 27 March 1943, was partially successful, and they managed to destroy 800,000 identity cards, and retrieve 600 blank cards and 50,000 guilders. The building was blown up and no one was caught on the night of the attack. However, due to an unknown betrayer, Arondéus was arrested on 1 April 1943. Arondéus refused to give up the rest of his team.
Arondéus was openly gay before the war and defiantly asserted his sexuality before his execution. His final words were:
"Tell the people that homosexuals are not by definition weak."

He was also a pretty great artist

not to be sentimental, but speaking of regulars, i don’t think any comment has made me want to work harder than one from my favourite group of regulars at the diner, a group of retired teachers from central mass, and on my last shift with them, they all wished me well with my studies, and one lady said, so sincere and without a trace of malice, “i hope we never see you again.” i cried when i got off that shift. there’s nothing wrong with service work, it’s hard work, it’s honest work, and i do find joy in it. but it isn’t what i want for myself either. and so when i hate my life and i hate what i’m doing and i hate the pressure, i think about those ladies that i waited on and how much they wanted me to go on and do great things. and i don’t think i’ll ever get close to greatness but i can at least damn well try. wouldn’t want to disappoint my regulars after all
i kinda wish i could actually turn on accents at will instead of just slipping into it whenever i’m talking with someone that has a different accent to me
my mom was being passive aggressive about something my brother did, and refused to tell me what exactly happened so i texted him in case he’d like gotten hurt or something.
turns out, he lost his car keys while at school and called her freaking out but someone had turned them in to the front desk so everything was fine.
this was three weeks ago, and my mother is still hung up on this.
like how dare he call her for help and support when he actually needed it and not after the issue had been solved 🙃
while classism and class struggle is an important part of svsss, if less obvious as a theme than it is in mdzs, i think it would be incorrect to say that luo binghe accusing shen jiu of abuse was accepted based (specifically) on classism (specifically against shen jiu). in pidw, the other characters, accept for yue qingyuan, think that shen jiu is a rich noble, or one of the two. while shen jiu does suffer so many setbacks and traumas due to his background as a slave and a street rat, the reason why people so easily accept luo binghe's accusations towards shen jiu is because shen jiu was an outwardly miserable and cruel person to everyone in his life. also i think (but i don't know, so correct me if i am wrong) that it's canon that most of the other characters already knew shen jiu was abusing his disciples. classism and sect politics are why no one did anything before luo binghe came back from the dead. when it was just disciples being abused, and mostly a disciple with no family behind him, there was no reason to bother interveening. but when the leader of huan hua palace and emperor of the demon realm accuses his former shizun (who they all already hated anyway bc he was awful to them too), then it would be poor politics not to believe and support him.
“Shizun speaks as if he hasn’t already resolved himself to keep them,” Luo Binghe said, well-familiar by then with the subtle ways in which his Empress’s innermost desires (the ones he often refused to acknowledge even to himself) manifested.
Chapter 2 of Empress Shizun and the case of too many fucking children is up!

why are dudes in fanfic always getting hit with freight train orgasms. why not an orient express orgasm, classy and romantic. where are the shinkansen train orgasms? his orgasm hit him like the TGV atlantique breaking the passenger rail speed record. like the shanghai maglev, his orgasm was a feat of engineering but something of a commercial disappointment.
Don’t tell me delayed orgasms aren’t a thing

they changed the tour on me suddenly, i thought it was going to be of the new exhibition, but nope it was for the museum as a whole and specifically the temporary exhibition on art deco because the people on the tour were art deco specialists - not a big issue in theory, but when the director was introducing me she was like "and gwen is an expert in art deco bindings, she can answer any of your questions about that" and ahhhhhhhhhhhh nooooooo no i am not omg omg omg if it had been 16th century bindings, or 19th century bindings, or especially art nouveau bindings then sure, i'm still not an expert but i can admit i probably know more than your average person on the street. but art deco???? i only knew the name of one of the binders off the top of my head and other than that i had to waffle by explaining the material composition of the different bindings on exhibit, which i would feel fine about, if the director hadn't set the bar so high by calling me "an expert" in front of actual specialists omg why would she do that to me crying
