Sebastian turned in a slow circle, his head back and face tilted up toward the ivy-tangled dome that arched high above him. Light from some nebulous, magical source lit the back of thick, verdant leaves; dust motes danced through the air here and there like little flakes of gold. Together, they gave the room a warm-yet-fresh feel, like honey and mint.
“You mean to tell me that you’ve had this for the last three years and just now thought to tell us about it?” He lowered his head and gave his red-headed companion a stern look. “Really, Elowyn Cadogan, do Ominis and I know you at all?”
She had the decency to look a little sheepish.
But then Sebastian watched her characteristic stubbornness take hold as she put her hands on her hips and stared him down from over the back of a worn, yellow leather sofa. “The whole purpose of all this” - she lifted a hand and gestured to the stone floor, wooden arches, warm colors, and plush seats all around the three of them - “was for me to have a place for privacy and study, particularly in my first year here. It’s not as if you and Ominis haven’t had the Undercroft to your own selves this entire time.”
“This place smells much nicer than the Undercroft, I’ll give you that,” Ominis murmured, an almost playful half-smile tugging up one corner of his mouth.
He lifted his face up toward the light - Sebastian assumed that his friend could feel the warmth of it - and breathed in deep. “You have a lot of plants in here, don’t you, Ellie?”
“This place practically screams ‘Hufflepuff,’” Sebastian snorted before Ellie could respond. “All cozy…and warm…and nice.”
“And what’s wrong with ‘cozy, warm, and nice’?” Ellie sniffed. “If you want ‘gloomy underwater cavern,’ you can go back to your common room. Although,” she paused, and the sudden mischievousness in her turquoise-hued eyes made Sebastian wary, “if you want to complain about my cheery Hufflepuff decor, I just might have a room in here that’s more suitable to your tastes.” She giggled, and Sebastian narrowed his eyes at her. “I should warn you, though, it smells like a bog.”
