Noah was halfway home from work when a black car skidded up beside him on the sidewalk, splashing rainwater in its wake.
The window rolled down. Noah flinched—then froze, recognizing the face behind the glass.
Ezra’s voice was low and urgent. They were already reaching across the seat, unlocking the door.
Noah didn’t ask questions. He climbed in, grateful for the escape—but the look on Ezra’s face chilled him more than the rain ever could.
“Look, I didn’t like what happened earlier. And I could tell it’s been pissing you off—the way Reid kept disrespecting you—”
“I don’t—” Noah stammered to cut them off. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
Ezra pressed on. “No, no. Just listen to me, okay.”
They didn’t wait a moment longer before peeling out from the sidewalk back into the road.
“I couldn’t stand the way he talked to you. The insults. The disrespect.” Ezra’s lip curled. “So, I did something about it. I was only sticking up for you. You know we’re both in this together.”
Noah blinked. “He’s what?”
“Ohhh, I see where this is going. You whine and complain about him all day, and when I make the problem go away—and you had nothing to do with it, by the way—suddenly you’re ungrateful? Suddenly I’m the bad guy?”
“I don’t want this!” Noah cried, shaking now. “I didn’t ask for this!”
“Hey. Hey. Noah. ” Ezra’s voice dropped. “Listen to me.”
They kept their eyes on the road. “What’s done is done. Let’s not turn on each other—we’ll just make it sloppy.”
A stretch of silence passed between them.
Noah’s hand drifted shakily to his coat pocket, pulling out his phone. The screen lit up with his location still tracking, pulsing. His thumb hovered—then tapped to disable it. It wasn’t much, but it was something.
If anyone came looking, he wouldn’t be followed here. Maybe that would buy him time. Or maybe it wouldn’t.
He tucked the phone away with trembling fingers.
“Now c’mon. Cheer up. You wanted this, you clearly did. Even if you don’t realize it yet.”
“Trust me.” Ezra’s voice rose—louder, stern. Unrelenting.
“You just—” They took a breath, steadying their tone. “You just have to trust me. I’m just looking out for you. This is what’s best for the both of us.”
Noah only sat in stunned silence, praying that what was happening wasn’t real. Terrified that it was, and that he was now caught in something he couldn’t undo.
He’d put up with enough of Ezra’s schemes before, but kidnapping? That was a whole new level of hell. A gateway to something they couldn’t come back from.
It made Noah’s stomach crawl.
And poor Reid—oh god, was he unconscious? Sure, he’d hated the guy but Noah had never agreed to this.
He glanced back into the backseat. It was empty. Whatever was in the trunk, it was silent.
“Whatever this sudden attitude is, you’re going to have to snap out of it. I’m gonna need your help getting him inside. We’ll be there soon.”
“Be where??” Noah snapped. “You just kidnapped a person! What the hell are you gonna do with him?”
Ezra smiled. “That’s the best part. Whatever we want, Noah.”
Noah didn’t respond. Couldn’t. His whole body had gone still, except for the trembling in his hands. Whatever Ezra had planned, Noah was part of it now—whether he liked it or not.
Noah gripped his phone from inside his coat, withdrawing it on instinct—some half-formed defense mechanism. The location was already off. He’d disabled it without thinking, like his body knew what kind of night this would be before he did.
Now he stared at the glowing screen, thumb trembling over nothing. A single tear landed on the glass.
No one would know where he was. No one would be coming.
And what was he supposed to do—call the police mid-crime? Report a kidnapper from inside the kidnapper’s car? That was the fastest way to end up in the trunk alongside Reid.
He turned the screen off and held the phone tight, like it might still save him somehow.
Ezra kept driving, finally pulling into a dark driveway.
“Where is here?” Noah pleaded again.
“You’ll find out soon. Just help me get him inside.”
Noah stared at them, trying not to cry.
“And since you have clearly forgotten,” Ezra smiled. “The word you’re looking for is thank you.”
