Honestly buffy is so fucking funny like here is boyfriend number 1. He is a centuries old vampire plagued with catholic guilt who becomes an unhinged killer if he has sex. This is my boyfriend number 3. He is also a centuries old vampire who got tests and experiments done on him and he's in love with me. What about boyfriend number 2 you ask? Well he was from Iowa.
Folks, backup your Tumblrs, for real this time
To be clear, I don't have any news about any impending doom. But I've heard a bit more about what's going on with staff after the layoff of last week, and there are even less people than I thought still working here.
I don't think even the current staff know what's going to happen, but honestly, I don't see how the high ups could even pretend to intend to keep this place open while virtually unstaffed.
And of course, if the most despicable thing happens, you can find me at @javi@goblin.band from any fediverse platform 🤷
for reference, OP is a former employee of Tumblr who tries to keep up to date with tumblr’s inner workings. please back your blogs up.
In your blog settings you have the ability to initiate a blog export, and this will generate a backup for your blog.
Fair warning though, if you've been on the platform for a long time this archive is likely to be quite hefty in file size. This blog I have had for 5 years with 22k posts, and the export from tumblr came to be 48GB. My previous blog I made in 2011 and has 95k posts, so needless to say I did not use tumblr's built in export to back that one up.
If you want more control over exactly what you back up from your blog, I recommend that you use tumblr-utils instead. It allows you to backup specific tags, post types, and to ignore posts that you did not create (reblogs where you've added a comment count as a post you created, to be clear).
To use it:
now in the window that opens it should show the current path, and you can type "py -2 .\tumblr_backup.py [your options] [your blog name]" and hit enter. Example:
Backing up just my original posts from this blog with this command came to 632MB rather than 48GB, and also gave me the option to save my posts in JSON format which will be useful for converting my posts to a new format for self hosting.
On that note I'm currently looking into figuring out a simple (and ideally free) way of self hosting a static site blog that utilises activitypub, and also converting my old posts to re-host on said blog.
This post series by maho.dev on implementing activitypub with any static site is my primary source of guidance atm if you also want to try figure that out yourself, as well as having an explanation for why you'd even want to do this if you don't already know
but if tumblr goes down before I get things sorted and write up a post about it then i'll be reporting back on it via my bsky, mastodon, and toyhouse accounts
if you dont have an account on any of these I'll also be sharing an update via my personal site's RSS feed, link of which includes an explanation of what RSS is and some feed readers you can use, I highly recommend checking it out as getting a feed reader is going to be the best way you can stay connected with people if they scatter across the internet!
tldr: download tumblr-utils to backup your blog more efficiently, introduce yourself to RSS and get a feed reader to stay connected with people, consider saving mine so you can find out how to self host your blog later if tumblr goes down
You know, I don’t think that character deaths really get me. Yeah, they’re sad, yeah I cry, yeah I will forever miss that character and of course make a fix-it fanfic. But that’s not what gets me.
It’s the character deaths that aren’t character deaths, but more like character development. Sure, it’s great and all, but sometimes you miss the first season. The season when the main character was young and wide eyed with their friends or family or whatever, and the threats were big but not too big. You don’t realize how much you miss it until you’re on the last season of the show and everything’s different. That main character you knew from the beginning is dead, in their place is a hardened warrior who’s never going to be able to get back to that little newbie they once were. The original group has disbanded or died or left, or they’re just as dead as the main character—you’ll never get that first season of themselves back.
And then when you go and rewatch that first season, all I can think of is the eyes of the main character in the last season versus their eyes in the first season.
Hey OP? What the FUCK does this mean?
decay exists as an extant form of life
That’s a terrifying answer, have a nice day
THE ORIGINAL?!?!!!!!!!!;!!!!!!!!???
I wear loud dangly belt chains and accessories for the same reason some people put a bell around their cat's neck. Doesn't keep me from decimating the local bird population but trains me to be more stealthy about it. And if they ever come off it's like Rock Lee's ankle weights - good luck having any idea where the fuck I am at any given time.
Two things can be true simultaneously. For example:
1) You are allowed to like or dislike whatever characters you choose in a TV show. You're allowed to have whatever opinions feel right for you.
2) Anybody who does not like Rose Marion Tyler has opinions that are suspect and cannot be trusted.

Let's talk about one of my favorite underrated Voyager moments, which is also incidentally my favorite bit of acting from Robert Beltran in the entire series. Bless the director who noticed what his face was doing and pointed a camera at it, and bless the editor who put the reaction shot in the final cut.
Because look at his face. Truly look at it and marvel at his magnificent series of micro-expressions. Janeway makes a dick joke on the bridge while threatening a hostile opponent and Chakotay goes on an entire damn journey.
I'm sure opinions will differ, but I'm seeing:
If he wasn't unfailingly loyal to her by the end of the first episode of season one and harboring a big dumb crush on her by the end of episode two, this moment definitely would have done the trick.
I think there are two types of people in this context: some can hide their feelings and reactions, others can't. I see KM as the kind of person who could smile beautifully at you at the height of her hatred for you. And I see RB as a guy who if he's pissed off (or any other type of emotion), you'll know it.
They're both great actors, but it's just the nature of a person, no matter how good they are at acting, sometimes a person will let their real feelings show through looks, micro-expressions, etc.
Ironically, in this regard, Janeway is like Kate and Chakotay is like Robert.
why is this post completely broken in every way imaginable
Broken notes… deactivated account… removed image….
Finally, we have them all.
In addition: OP’s name is just… gone. No “[insert username]-deactivated[insert a bunch of numbers]” as is the standard for deactivated blogs.
Just the world “deactivated.” Look upon their post, ye mighty, and despair.
It’ll be almost impossible to find this post unless it wanders across your dash.
It also only has 1 note. Truly a broken post
