Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 last week, was discharged from a Helsinki hospital on Wednesday after a nearly two-day stay.

He said his Covid symptoms were diminishing, but he was now dealing with a case of pneumonia.

The 73-year-old president announced the development in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

"Covid subsided — pneumonia struck. Less than a couple of days in the Meilahti [Hospital]; inflammation numbers have gone down, and my fever has gone down by three degrees," he wrote.

The president praised the care he received at the hospital, which he described as effective, professional and friendly.

"Many people comforted me that I was getting the best care available in the world, and they were right. Thank you to all of the pros at Meilahti Hospital! I will continue recuperating at home," Niinistö's post read.

The Office of the President said that Niinistö would continue to work remotely — from the president's official residence in Mäntyniemi, Helsinki — as he recovers from pneumonia, and that he was doing relatively well.

Niinistö announced on Tuesday that he would be unable to attend Wednesday's main Veterans' Day commemoration event in person due to his Covid status.

However, he thanked the country's war veterans in a tweet on Wednesday morning, saying that their sacrifices would not be forgotten and wishing them a happy National Veterans' Day.

Niinistö and his wife Jenni Haukio thanked veterans as well as the women who served in the Lotta Svärd auxiliary organisation.
