A car crash claimed the lives of two people around the age of 20 in the town of Savonlinna on Tuesday evening, according to the Eastern Finland Police Department.

The individuals who died in the collision were the driver and a person seated in the front passenger seat. Three people, also in their twenties, who were in the backseat were hurt in the crash, but police did not have information about the severity of their injuries.

The collision occurred on Tuesday at around 7:40pm on Savonlinnantie.

According to police, the vehicle veered off the road into the oncoming lane of traffic and crashed into a tree at high speed. The collision took place on a section of road between two intersections that lead to Savonlinna's Meikkoniemi and Mertala neighbourhoods.

The Eastern Finland Police Department's Jouni Väisänen, chief investigator of the crash, said the vehicle was driving at a considerable speed before the accident, according to current information.

The posted speed limit on that stretch of road is 60km/h.

It was raining and the road was wet at the time of the crash, according to police.

"The investigation is in the very early stages. We will continue to investigate the events," Väisänen said.
