Speed limits on the nation's roads will be reduced for the winter season this week, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency announced on Monday.

The main changeover day for speed limits is Thursday 26 October, but regional Ely centres can make adjustments as early as Monday depending on weather conditions.

Speed limits will drop to 80km/h on trunk roads and to between 100km/h and 120km/h on motorways.

The higher limit on motorways can be extended until the end of November if weather conditions permit. For example, the 120 km/h limit may remain in place during daylight hours in good driving conditions well into November.

The return to summer speed limits typically occurs in early April, as the days lengthen and road conditions improve.

Winter tyres should be used according to weather or driving conditions from 1 November until 31 March. Studded tyres are permitted during this period, and they may also be used outside the season if warranted by weather or road conditions.

During the period from November to March, summer tyres may be used if the local road conditions are not slippery or at risk of becoming slippery. In individual cases, road traffic authorities determine whether the conditions require winter tyres. Responsibility falls on the driver to ensure that the vehicle is fitted with winter tyres in winter conditions.

This article was updated at 12:08 on 24.10 to reflect that the 1 December mandatory requirement for winter tyres in no longer in effect.
