A young person died in a severe car crash in Tampere on Saturday evening, police have confirmed. The crash occurred just before 9pm, with four young people in the vehicle at the time.
The car veered off the road near Kalkun Kehätie and Kolmihaarankatu, landing in a wooded area after failing to go around a roundabout. Detective Chief Inspector Jani Ortamala of the Central Finland Police stated that the vehicle appeared to have been travelling at high speed.
The driver was breathalysed, and the incident is being investigated as a suspected case of drink driving, as well as aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, involuntary manslaughter and causing injury. Further tests will determine the driver's blood alcohol content.
"We're still investigating what substances were in the driver's system," Ortamala said, adding that the exact cause of the accident should become clearer in the coming week.
One of the passengers, all of whom were under 20 years old, died at the scene. The other three passengers were transported to the hospital, but their conditions remain unknown.
The crash was first reported by Tampere-based newspaper Aamulehti.
