Finland has quietly made a major arms deal with the United States, reports Helsingin Sanomat. The deal involves missiles designed to home in on radiation sources, enhancing the capabilities of its new F-35 fighter jets.
The cutting-edge weapons system is unlike anything previously used by the Defence Forces, according to HS, and it's so advanced that even the United States, its seller, is only now beginning to deploy it themselves.
While the Ministry of Defence has not revealed the cost of the new missiles, it is public information in the US that Congress authorised the sale of up to 150 missiles to Finland a year ago, for 500 million dollars.
Two years ago, the Air Force announced the acquisition of 64 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II multi-role fighters in an 8.4-billion-euro deal with the US manufacturer.

Hej då!
Hufvudstadsbladet readers and Ikea's Swedish-speaking customers in Finland are outraged by its decision to remove Swedish-language product signs in stores.
The Swedish furniture giant told HBL that product descriptions are increasingly moving online, which is why the Swedish-language product tags have been phased out in Finland.
Responding to the criticism, an Ikea spokesperson admitted that it was a mistake to bid the Swedish tags farewell (or hejdå in Swedish) — but not the Finnish ones — before the new digital tools were ready.
Jonas Holmqvist, a service marketing expert, told HBL that Ikea's policy in Finland negatively contrasts against its language policies in other multilingual countries like Spain, Belgium and Switzerland, where it has chosen to serve all linguistic minorities.
Beaver moon
Iltalehti tells skywatchers that the year's final supermoon will rise in the night sky on Friday evening. November's full moon is called the Beaver Moon.
A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth. It can appear as much as 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than a typical full moon.
The next supermoon will not be visible until October 2025.
