Coming Soon...

My sincerest apologies that I haven't posted in forever! The last month, which is usually supposed to be really slow for me since summer camps are over...was not! I had small conference in September that I was over, and then I got myself into all kinds of blanket sewing projects that filled my 'craft, blog, cook, etc' time. I am currently in the middle of a two week long Chinese conference. The few weeks before Thanksgiving were a race to get everything ready. Then I was in California with my family for a week for Thanksgiving (while Rand was in El Salvador for a dental excursion). I arrived home on Saturday, November 28th. I had just enough time to attend the annual BYU vs. Utah rivalry game, and then do final prep for the conference. Sunday, the following day, consisted of a number of trips to the airport to pick up the participants (with interpreter in tow...because, oh yeah, they don't speak English).
Ever since then it's been non-stop 'go, go, go'!

I finally had a break to catch up on some of what is going on in all of your lives (those in the blogging world!) This conference is over this weekend (after some more death-defying drives in this snowstorm to the airport, stories to follow!) and then I will begin my 'catch-up' for the blog. You know, some updates on our lives the last few months
(birthdays, my Cali trip, Rand's trip to El Salvador, etc.)

Again, sorry to be such a flake (no offense to my Flake Family friends),
but I will be back in a week...I promise!

CALIFORN-I-A

Every August, for as long as I can possibly remember, my mom has taken a trip to Utah for Education Week at BYU. This was her vacation every year.
At first it began as a trip for her to take with some of her best friends.
They would meet up at Ed Week every summer and leave their hubbies at home with the kids.

Then the kids got older and were able to attend themselves...and we did.
It soon became a family vacation for everyone in the families.
The adults would attend classes together and so would the kids.

Then I lived here and worked here.
Employees at BYU oft times dread the 'take-over' of campus and Provo that happens for one week every August. It's crazier than any other week in the year
(Women's Conference may be the one exception).
But I still loved it because it was a week that my parents and brother came for a visit!

Last year I didn't think my parents would come due to my mom's health, but she was determined. She came with my dad and she attended a few classes here and there.

That wasn't the case this year. I knew they weren't going to make it,
so Rand and I planned a trip to Cali instead.
It was a good week to do it because it happened to be the first week
that my mom would be on dialysis.

For those who don't know, my mom is currently on the donor list for a kidney transplant.
She was born with only one good kidney and the other never developed.
After a life time of wear and tear, it's finally time.
We've been aware this day was coming for about 5 years or so now, but it finally arrived.

It was so good to be at home and I'm especially glad that I could be there that week as she went through all of this. I wish I lived closer so I could go with her to some of her dialysis treatments since my brother and dad just simply can't take that much time off work each week (3 days a week for 2 hours each session). And little kids aren't allowed, so my sister-in-law is
out too due to my nephews.

So, back to our trip: it was fun to go home!
I LOVED seeing my family. Aside from my oldest brothers family, younger brother and a few cousins, all my family and extended family (both sides) live in the Sacramento area.
So going home to California affords me being able to see everyone!

The first day there I was able to attend a bridal shower for my cousin David's fiance, Ashley.
In doing so I got to see tons of my cousins (which is always a blast!)
Unfortunately...no camera with me at it. :o(

I also got to see my Grandma (mom's mom).
Rand and I drove to her home and picked her up for a visit with my mom at our house.
My mom had just had her small surgery to have her tubes put in for her dialysis treatments.
You can see where they were inserted in the picture below.

The night before the tubes were put in we made a family trip out to my cousins new business.
It's called 'Brain Freeze' and it's a frozen yogurt place in Lincoln.
If you are out there...check it out, it's some good stuff.

We met up with my cousin Erin and her hubby (one of my best friends growing up) Justin.
My nephew Hyrum was wired that night and all he wanted was for people to go on walks with him to the fountain, or for Rand to continuously throw him in the air.
Another highlight to the trip: seeing my nephews!
I don't see these two nearly enough since they are in Cali.
Most the time they were happy to be around us...
But on a few occasions it turned out more like this:
But anytime Grandpa is around, Hyrum is in heaven!
He loves my dad so much. For a while my parents were watching him a few days a week when Lacey and Shaun were both working. Hyrum would walk through the door calling for Grandpa.
Sometimes my dad would be in his office working with the door locked so he wouldn't be disturbed, and Hyrum would sit outside the door begging Grandpa to open it. ha ha.
I spent a few late nights working on these blankets for Hyrum and Efraim.
I had made a blanket for my other brothers kids and thought it was time I did one for them too.
But I couldn't do it while they were there, so I would stay up
super late some night (3 AM) working on them.

But they turned out great!
Hyrum LOVES Handy-Manny.
He is obsessed with fixing things and using tools (like father like son).
It made the theme for his blanket easy to decide.
Hyrum is still too young to care, so I just chose some 'boy' colors.
I think Efraim is a happy customer!
Hyrum is just happy as long as he has a tool in his hand!
If you notice, he is 'sawing' his blanket.
(and yes, Handy Manny is on in the background!)
Hyrum's other favorite person: Rand.
This kid has so much energy, and I think Rand is a good person for that.
He came in the house looking for Rand to play with everyday.
This day we took Rand to him.
We also took a trip as a family to the Sacramento Temple to do a session.
Always a must on a trip home.

I love this picture.
Besides the temple itself...this tree is my favorite thing there.
It is so fitting for this temple because these trees are all over back home.

As soon as I knew we'd be heading to Cali during warm weather
(a first since our wedding reception),
I've been planning our trip to Great America!

I found a cheap ticket deal on-line for $25 a person and roped my brother and his friend into going with us. It was a blast...as usual.
As always, the first and last (and a few in-between) ride we went on was 'Top Gun'.
They now call it 'Flight Deck', but that's just silly. It will always be Top Gun to me.
(That's like calling Candlestick Park by some other name...not happening!)

I'd been telling Rand about a few of these rides and how awesome they were.
I think (and by that I mean 'know') he doubted me on this.
But Top Gun pulled through for me...he loved it.
If it wasn't a 'risk of loss'...I'm sure he'd be wearing his maverick glasses during the ride!

Kev and Weston ready for takeoff!

For those who haven't been on the ride...here's a little taste of it!
It was hard to keep the camera steady, but after a few attempts I finally got it!
p.s. This is a ride you want to do from the very front or the very back...middle seats don't cut it!

You just get to a point in the day were you are sick of walking...the sky tram is the only way to get from point A to point B at that time.
(I know, the sunglasses are huge. But they were only $5!)
This is the new Survivor ride (new since I'd been there).
It was actually a pretty fun ride and we went on it a couple times.
The 'wheel' spins as the ride goes back and forth on the track.
Action shots.
You sit on a seat (like a bike seat) and a harness come up against your back to lock you in.
Be careful, if you aren't ready for it...it can come as a kidney shot (ask Rand).

Had to do the Rip Roaring Rapids as well!
I think Kev took the brunt of it.
We decided to stop at the games center so Rand and I could play a little air hockey.
We NEVER pass up a chance to play!

Weston decided to first try out his strength with the arm wrestling.
I think those machines are there to make guys feel better! ha ha.
Then it was time to get down to business!
Our games get a little out of control.
Typical game includes: trash talking (of course), the puck flying off the table AT LEAST once, and possible sliding of the losing players paddle across the table at the end of the game.

This game had two of those: trash talking and flying pucks. In fact, Rand almost nailed a little boy walking by. You should have seen his face as the puck flew across in front of him!
Alas...Heavenly Father took control of this competitive, trash talking couple!
When things were at their highest intensity with a tie score...the game turned off!
Cruel...yes!
Necessary for a continued day of fun...probably.
(Seriously though...it's not the first time we've had this happen! It happens often. One night we played air hockey, QB football challenge and basketball shoot-out challenge and
tied on all of them! How is that possible?!)

We weren't able to go on the 'Invertigo' ride because it had just broke down the week before with people on it. They were stuck for like 4 or 5 hours, suspended in the air and had to be rescued by fire crews. Fun ride...but glad I didn't have to deal with the thought of it happening again.

I always told Rand how much bigger Great America is than Lagoon in Utah. Though I do think it is a little bigger, it wasn't as big as I remember it being when I was younger.
But location wise (Cali vs. Utah), I still say it wins! :o)

It was tons of fun to be in Cali.
We also went kayaking at Natomas, but no camera!
It was beautiful too. I'll remember next time!
This is another 'must' when I go home during warm weather.

I can't wait until my next trip out there were I get to see more of my family...
including this little chunkster!

Fondant Cakes!

In August I took the fondant/tiered cake decorating class.
I have mixed feelings about fondant. Over-all, I really like it.
Especially having a much better tasting recipe that I can make myself
rather than buying the gross store-bought stuff. And it is pretty forgiving in my opinion. However, it does take a little more time than normal for me
(especially if you need pieces to stiffen),
and time is what I never feel like I have enough of.

Anyway...we made two cakes in the class. Here is what I was able to finish while in class for the first cake (sorry, the picture loaded sideways!):

But being the perfectionist I am, I had to go home and do more to it and experiment
with some of the pearl dust that gives it that shine.

I was pretty happy with it in the end.
I'd probably do the bows on top a little different next time, but it worked.
And over-all it tasted pretty good.
Definitely sugary.

Our second cake was supposed to be a tiered cake.
Again, I have this OCD-ness about me that has to create some grand idea.
Let's just say that I left class the last day with nothing but two iced cakes!

Two days later after working on it at home after work,
and I finally had a finished product!

It wasn't exactly the idea I first had in mind. I had to alter my ideas as I went along.
And if I had to do it again, I would have done the bow very differently.
Apparently you need to give the fondant much more time to harden
or else it will quickly collapse and lose it's shape!

But after working on it for multiple days, I was just happy to have it done!
There is still one more class I'd like to take that is all on fondant and gum paste,
but it's not offered anytime soon and I need a break anyway!

Cirque du Soleil

Rand had been wanting to go and see a Cirque du Soleil show for a while. They came to town and Rand's parents were nice enough to get us some tickets as early birthday presents!
It was a fun show and the things those people can do are amazing!
I think I just sat there shocked at some of the things they were pulling off.

It was a nice date out for us in the middle of a crazy busy summer.

BYU Summer Ballroom Camps

Well, my busiest week of the summer finally came and seemed to pass by just as quickly!
This camp takes so much preparation because it does not run like any other camp we have all summer (mainly because it involved adults). You might think that the kids camps involve more work...but I can assure you that this camp is by far the most work of them all!

But the camp is always a blast, I meet wonderful people from all over,
and the professional dancers are always great to work with!

This is basically were I spend my days during the camp: manning the information tables.

Next are pictures of me with all the professional instructors that we had at the camp.
Again, they were so great to work with.

This is Christian Perry.
If you watch DWTS, he's been on there a number of times as a choreographer and guest dancer.
He also did the "Khaki's Swing" commercial for Gap a long time ago (among other things).
I still stand by my statement from last summer: he resembles a tan Nicholas Cage.
Urs and Agnes. They were here for 2 weeks because they worked both Adult and Youth Ballroom camps. Urs is German and Agnes is Polish.
There dance numbers at the banquets were AMAZING!
Pierre and Mireille.
The cutest couple!
They are from Canada and have the sense of humor to match.
Such a great couple and I was shocked to see how well they still fly across the dance floor!
Thomas and Isabella.
These two have more energy than you could find ANYWHERE!
Rumor has it it's all the caffeine (mainly for Thomas).
They are both from Poland.
They had the most energized performance at the banquet.
Tomas and JT.
Two of the nicest people I've ever met. Very kind, very gracious!
JT is just this ball of spunkiness and
Tomas...well, he's always voted 'best looking instructor' by the girls in the office.
Tomas is also Polish and JT is from the good 'ole US of A.
After a FUN FILLED Adult Ballroom camp, the next week began the Youth Ballroom camp.
I'm able to breath a little easier this week while my student planner, Amy,
steps in and handles alot of it!

This is me with Jonathan and Anna.
They are frequent dancers on DWTS.
They are both hilarious and very down to earth, and you can see how much
fun they have in together in their marriage.
I was able to drive them to the airport that morning they left and they were just so chill.
I seriously can't believe how much they travel every year...INSANE.
Amy and I with both couples at the Youth Ballroom Banquet.
All the professionals are so gracious in taking SO MANY pictures at the end of the
banquet with all the participants who request them.

And Agnes was nice enough to give me her flowers at the end of Youth Ballroom because they were headed to another event and she couldn't take them with her.
Time to start preparing for next year already!
If you want to learn how to ballroom dance from some great professionals,
come on out!

The Spudman Triathlon

On July 25th Rand and I competed in the Spudman Triathlon in Burley, ID.

This was my second time doing this triathlon and Rand's first.
Last time I did this triathlon (3 years ago), I trained about 5 days a week for over 2 months prior to the race.

This year, since I am in far worse shape than I was 3 years ago,
I decided to train just a handful of times!
NOT WISE!

Basically I had only a few goals going into this race:
1. Don't drown (always my #1 goal)
2. Finish the race
3. Don't walk during the run

I'm happy to say I accomplished all three goals. One day I'll set a time goal too! haha!

It was definitely fun to have Rand competing with me this year.
His parents all came up with us to watch and cheer us on.

Here we are finding a good spot to leave our running gear for the bike-to-run transition
the night before the race.
Setting up our bikes the night before as well.
Always important to remember where you put your stuff or your transition times are horrible!
A few minutes before Rand's heat began.
Once they are in the water, it's hard to know who it who since most everyone is in wetsuits and wearing the same color cap.
Rand's mom found me after the swim as I was heading out on the bike portion.
Rand at the bike-to-run transition.
Here Rand is running into the finish line.
It's definitely nice to finish on a downhill!
Here I am coming in to the finish (in the middle).
I had been running with the girl in front of me towards the end, but my knees were killing me (lack of proper training) so she went ahead for the last quarter mile.
But the competitive side of me always kicks in and we crossed the finish line at the same time.
Here we are SO happy for the race to be over!
Rand finished 16th in his division (out of 94) with a time of 2:21:30
I can't wait to see what he pulls off when he legitimately trains for a race!

I finished with a time of 2:55:55
I can't tell you my actual placement because there were girls in my category who
started with an earlier heat, therefore shaving 20 minutes off their time.
I think I officially finished in the top 1/3.

My time three years ago was 2:54:48 (I finished 22nd out of 63).
So my time this year was very comparable to 3 years ago.
I wonder how I did that considering I am in MUCH worse shape and trained less.
Let me assure you...the pain I felt after the race this year was the difference!

And of course, what better to throw into your body after a big race than something like this:
Seriously, for some reason after a big race this is all your body craves!
And we feel it only necessary to reward our bodies for finishing such a feat. :o)

After the race we drove back to Utah.
My sister-in-law Lacey was visiting her family and we decided to stop by and see her.
It was my first time seeing my new nephew Efraim,
and it had been about 7 months since seeing his big brother Hyrum.

They were so excited to see us as you can see in the following pictures!

Oh well!
Loved holding Efraim while he was asleep, and it was definitely good to see Lacey!

Besides, we made a trip out to see my family in August and we got
plenty of fun time with these kiddos!
More on that later!

The saddest thing about this triathlon (which is my favorite one) is that I won't be able to do it next year due to my work schedule. This year the race was the day before the start of my biggest camp (how I pulled off doing it was insane).
But next year it is the Saturday after that same camp. Seeing as how the camp ends around midnight, I don't think I'll make it up in time for that race (nor would I have the energy!)
