New Avatar Day!

New avatars used to be reserved for Mondays, but I am a rule-breaker by nature, so I’m making today New Avatar Day!  And there’s nothing those stuffed shirts at city hall can do about it*!  I LIVE for the danger of it all - and the women.  Ah yes - the women.

(The guitar?   Sadly…it’s not mine.  It’s a Gretsch Billy Bo Jupiter I photographed recently on sale at The Guitar Shop, in Port Credit, Ontario (West of Toronto, Canada).  Don’t look for it there though..it’s already been sold)

* Well we are talking about TORONTO city hall, so they may not actually be wearing shirts at all.  I heard that smoking crack in a shirt isn’t as much fun.

I stuck an Allparts ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge with brass saddles in place of the stock “nashville” bridge on my newest guitar, a (used) 2005 Flying V.  I just like the way an ABR-1 looks vs. a Nashville TOM.

I like strawberries too, but I bought 5 pounds of them at the local market - they are in season at the moment and so quite inexpensive.  But 5 pounds of strawberries???  What was I thinking?!?  It’s too much for me alone!  I don’t want them to go bad, so I’m trying to eat as many as possible ASAP!  I have eaten SO MANY that I fear I may actually turn into a strawberry myself!

I was poking around the extensive parts wall at my friend Peter’s guitar shop (Mojo Music of Oakville, Ontario, Canada), and I found a lovely Allparts ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic with brass saddles for cheap.

I grudgingly admit that the Nashville TOM bridge is technically a “better” design than the old ABR-1design - it’s wider, so allows more adjustment for intonation, and the adjustment screws are sealed into the bridge assembly…so they won’t fall out all over the place if you happen to invert the bridge while the strings are off!   But, I think the ABR-1 wins hands down from an aesthetic perspective.  The Nashville is bland.  The ABR-1 is beautiful…especially with brass saddles!

Photo #1 shows the stock “Nashville” bridge on my new Flying V…and the others show the ABR-1 after I installed it.

In fact…I may just convert all my other Gibsons with “Nashville” bridges to ABR-1s over the next few months.  Even my Nighthawk!  :D

Nothing is “wrong” with the Starla…

Hey all:  this is just a follow-up to my post from earlier today where I accused the PRS Starla of being the “Edsel of Guitars”!  For those who were not alive in 1950’s (which I think is pretty much ALL of us…even old guys like me aren’t THAT old!), the Edsel was a fancy new car introduced by Ford that, for whatever reason, did NOT get accepted by the public, and even though it was a nice enough car, it utterly failed to sell, and was soon discontinued.  There is more to the story, but you can read that here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edsel

My friend Kyle (http://hauntedtraphouse.tumblr.com/) wanted to know what was wrong with Starlas…why had I cast aspersions of the Edsel on them?  And of course, my answer is “NOTHING” is wrong with Starlas!  I, in fact, LOVE the Starla.  I don’t only own “a” Starla myself…I own TWO Starlas!

BUT, the guitar-buying world does not seem to agree with me about this guitar… Starlas just do NOT seem to sell for some reason. At least not where I live.

Recently I tried to sell one of my Starlas for $1500 on Kijiji.  Keep in mind the “new” retail price of a Starla is around $1800.  The one I was selling is MINT…like brand new, just out of the box, mint.    $1500 was a reasonable…hell a VERY reasonable asking price.  But after 2 weeks I got no bites.  Not even an offer.   So, I lowered the asking price to $1250.  And I got…Nothing. Not one response or offer!  So after a couple of months of getting zero response, I lowered it to $1100.  AND STILL GOT NOTHING!

After three or four months listed on Kijij and Craigslist, with only one or two lowball offers received (one guy offered $600 for it!  After I stopped laughing I hunted him down and punched him in the nose!)  I took it off the market.  There is no way I am letting a mint condition 1800 dollar guitar go for less than 1100!

Also: I am the only person I know that has a Starla (let alone TWO Starlas!).  I have never seen a single one being played anywhere by anyone except in photos on Internets and even then I have only seen one or two players with them.

Also Also: ALL of the Starlas in the local shops near my home have been there for 18 to 24 months without selling!  The retail prices started out in the $1800 range, and over the course of the last 18 months or so kept going down until they bottomed out at around $1500.  But even then these guitars did not sell, and now the prices have been put back up to 1800!  I guess, like me, the stores are thinking “if no one’s going to buy it, they might as well not buy it for $1800!”  My point is that the stores have all tried reducing prices and yet, like me, they STILL cannot sell a Starla!

So: what is wrong with the Starla?  IMO, nothing.  I love them.  In the market’s opinion…well I can’t answer that one.  But they just do NOT sell.  It is definitely the “Edsel” of the guitar world!

PS: Here is the one I was trying (and failing!) to sell!  If you live in the Toronto area, and want this guitar at the bargain-basement price of $1100…please message me!  ;D

It currently sports a Fender six saddle ‘vintage’ style bridge. This Telecaster gets a lot of use these days when playing with Jet Weston and his Atomic Ranch hands.

I had a 1988 version of this very guitar (not a lefty though..) and it was gorgeous!  Like an imbecile I sold it..and I have regretted it ever since.

PS: Do yourself a favour and check out this guy…Mark’s Guitars.  I think he is fairly new to Tumblr…but from what I have seen so far he has an AMAZING collection.  And they are all lefties!  :)

Alabama Shakes - Hold On

This tune consists of just 2 chords.  Yeah, 2 chords and a sh*tload of soul!

I swear when I heard this for the first time, within a few seconds I had ordered the disc from Amazon!  And yes, before you say anything, I STILL buy CDs…!  :D

Many thanks to spigool for turning me on to this band!  Merci beaucoup! :)

I have had a great experience in the past 4 days!  The greatness is directly proportional to the amount of time I have spent playing this beautiful little Martin 00-18V, which I traded my Larrivee D-05 for 4 days ago!   As I write this post,  it is April 2nd, 2012, 8:16 pm in Toronto, Canada.

In my life I have owned a few dozen guitars.  Most of these have been electric guitars, but I have had 4 or 5 acoustics over the years too.  But I never really enjoyed playing the acoustics…mostly because they either were too big for me (as you know, I LOVE small guitars!) but also because they did not sound that good…at least not up to my own expectation!

This guitar changes everything.  It is FANTASTIC.  I could not have hoped for anything more in a guitar, and since I bought it I have played more acoustic guitar in 4 days than I had in the previous 4 years!  :D

How about this for some affordable pre-CBS Fender?  It’s a 1955 Fender Stringmaster triple neck steel!  I think the idea was that each neck could be in a different tuning so the layer could switch between them during a show rather than having to pause to change the tuning…

This instrument is straight out of the Golden Age of Fender!  When it was built in 1955 the Stratocaster had only been out for 1 year (and it still had a single ply, 8 screw pick guard, maple neck and 2 tone sunburst!).  The Les Paul for only 3 years in ‘55 and the “granddaddy” of solid-body electric guitars (the Fender Telecaster/Broadcaster/Nocaster) had only appeared ~5 years earlier! A good portion of Leo Fender’s business before the Tele and Strat had been in amplifiers and lap steels.

Here is my 1990 Rickenbacker 325V59 in Mapleglo.  It is really small…so I like it on that level.  However, the short scale makes the strings feel really loose and spongy when tuned to standard pitch.  I have actually put .012’s on it to try and make up for some of the tension lost becasue of the short scale.  It doesn’t really work though.  :(

On the plus side, all you have to do is plug this in and you instantly sound like the early Beatles! :D

I have been playing the PRS non-stop since yesterday.  I forgot how much I liked it!  It’s about 7 pounds (nice and light!), and has split-able humbuckers and lovely bird inlays.

The fun thing about having a fairly large collection of guitars is that every now and then you pick up an instrument you have not played in a few weeks or months…and it’s almost like getting a new guitar all over again!

Les Paul Gold Tops are some of the most beautiful guitars ever made.  They are physically stunning.  But they’re way too heavy for my taste.  I’ll stick with my 6.1 pound Epiphone Casino, thanks!

I cal this one “Stereo Starlas”  :D

  • Left: 2010 PRS Starla, stock with Bigsby, frost blue metallic.
  • Right: 2011 PRS Starla, custom order (stop bar instead of Bigsby), charcoal.

These are seriously cool guitars…but I don’t need two of ‘em, so the blue one is up for sale!  If you or anyone you know in the Toronto area is looking for a vary versatile PRS, send 'em my way!
