Wow, this one was a lot of things I didn't expect, and it was absolutely a brilliant surprise. I went into it expecting a Bond-type thriller, but what I ended up getting was a Conclave-esque gossip movie for adults — but filtered through British spy movies instead of Catholicism.
And just like Conclave, the sheer star power helped carry me through what I imagine most people turn to reality TV for. Got a fair few laughs out of me, this one, and my initial misgivings about a complete lack of setup gave way to a lot of enjoyment in the end.
My fandom of Edward G. Robinson continues, I think one of the best villainous actors I've seen in any era. Claire Trevor does a pretty great job as well.
I thought they could've done a bit more to make Bogart's character work, maybe it comes off better in the stage play version of this story.
And as with some of the stage play adaptations I've seen, I think the cinematography makes the source material a bit too obvious at times, and suffers for it — but overall I thought the film comes together quite well in the end.
This is such a fascinating movie. On its face, a reasonably straightforward romance film about two fighting lovers, but the way the film goes back on itself, breaks the fourth wall and recurs over and over again it becomes something much bigger than that. In a weird way, I think that recursive nature and the higher-than-life ideals fit the two characters amazingly, so it really only works *because* of that. Quite enjoyable on the whole.
Throughout this film the one thing I couldn't get off my mind was a Captain America: Civil War style social media campaign where people would tweet '#TeamLawrence' '#TeamBellini' etc. Would have done really well I think.
Anyway, great film. I think the nuances of it are probably lost on a non-Catholic, but still a great reflection on faith and the things we do to justify it.
