This wannabe Andrea Arnold dissertation on childhood trauma almost had me in the first half. I was engaged, captivated & disgusted but that all fizzled out once the actual film revealed its true colours.

Shallow & confusing with a sprinkle of shock factor, which might have gone a long way if I wasn’t enduring what felt like the longest 2 hours of my life.

Joseph Quinns batty crease might be enough for many but not me. I need more from my movies to be truly won over.

Maybe this film was intentionally a mess 🤔.

    An upsetting watch at times.

The illusion of one continuous take works well here especially as it’s largely character based. Making each episode feel more like one grand scene as opposed to a series of set pieces (with the exception of the first episode which probably has the most visual flare).

Despite not being a pleasant watch today as an adult, I still hold a special place in my heart for this film. Both its intent & role in inspiring me to write as a child, have had lasting impacts.

Sure it’s a bit of a textbook white saviour cliche, the dialogue is all super cheesy & the structure is borderline choppy fairytale fluff.

But at its core, it’s a good teacher who genuinely cares for the kids she teaches trying her best whilst her goofy husband remains incredibly unsupportive. Not groundbreaking but a little heartwarming.

The real life events that inspired the film are also worth looking into.

This film feels like the unearthing of a suppressed childhood memory. Think fear in being your true self & following your heart instead of living with the reality of your situation post not having taken that leap of faith when it mattered most.

Life can become mundane existing in the constant comfort zone & it’s scary when you feel purpose is within reach yet ultimately you choose to go without.

Some Donnie Darko vibes in this, the way everything just unravels in…
