Billy Elliot 2000
Radical film challenges both norms of gender expectation & wrestles with toxic masculinity in a way that never feels preachy.
Instead Billy Elliot is a grounded film set to the backdrop of a struggling 80s union picket line. The characters all feel layered in subtly as though not to undermine the audience, so all their individual arcs are only clear if you’ve been paying attention.
This makes for really satisfying cinema as everything comes together for the films emotional climax.

An upsetting watch at times.
The illusion of one continuous take works well here especially as it’s largely character based. Making each episode feel more like one grand scene as opposed to a series of set pieces (with the exception of the first episode which probably has the most visual flare).

Lost in Translation 2003
I think it’s possible to create a sense of cultural dislocation without relegating Japan & Japanese people to a 1 dimensional & at times offensive walking stereotype.
I recognise many people are drawn to this films melancholic, more slow, mood centric approach when depicting isolation & complete disconnection. Credit to Sofia on that front, but there’s really nothing interesting going on here for me to truly understand the overwhelming appeal of this movie.
I was never bored, just irritated.
The whole white people in Japan thing just doesn’t do it for me personally.
