Smart construction and cinematography from Soderbergh, but Presence is hard to enjoy when Koepp writes three out of the five main characters so deeply unlikeable, including the eventual villain - who is so comically over the top that it's hard to take seriously.

What a bunch of easy to despise and yet somehow lovable yuppie dweebs!

This is the kind of thing that in other hands would result in a bloated ten episode miniseries. Instead we get the tight, original storytelling we used to expect from a time at the movies.

Schoenbrun uses the language of the WB, Nickelodeon and creepypasta to tell a deeply affecting story about what it means to be true to ourselves. Specifically a unique story about trans and queer identity and dysphoria, ISTTVG may feel pitch black, but ultimately reminds the audience that it's never too late to be the real you. I could call this reminiscent of Lynch or Cronenberg, but what Jane has created feels entirely new and marks an exciting leap forward from a major voice.
