Commendable for its portrayal of the FBI and Chicago PDs determination to stamp out any resistance to economic and racial hierarchies. Suffers from unimaginative cinematography and the sidelining of Hampton’s greatest achievement—the feat that resulted in a phone book thick FBI file before he could legally drink alcohol— building a rainbow coalition that was united under a redistributive agenda. Thus, the film is unable to effectively explain the FBI’s hatred of Hampton.

Beautiful cinematography, otherwise a film hamstrung by poor pacing and writing. The landscape scenes of Amami-Oshima are a welcome respite between the plodding, mechanical dialogue.
