If you’re going to make your twist transphobic, at least don’t use a tired cliched trope. Dreck.
A bewilderingly misguided film that seems willfully disconnected from reality. It fails on every level, from story and themes to character arcs to the technical aspects (directing, editing). Oh, and product placement so blatant that entire scenes could be spliced out unedited and used as commercials for Starbucks or IHOP.
This is a movie that wants me to empathize with Sean Penn and make me think he really is the best caretaker for his child, but even the supposedly villainous…
Better than I expected! A sagging middle third and a dedication to returning to the same “adopted family” well Gunn has used before (with diminishing returns) keeps this film from being great; still, it’s functional, has a few good laughs and is forgettably enjoyable, which is a big step up from its predecessor being unforgettably awful.
