The Brutalist 2024
Guy Pearce stole the show for me, but I genuinely thought all the performances were good, even Joe Alwyn turned the ship around at the end. The score is the most memorable I've heard since Dune and does some heavy lifting for the more dramatic moments. This is a very well-crafted film and it got my gears turning about what separates a great movie from a good one.
A great film is one that is more than the sum of…

Strange Days 1995
Long-haired Ralph Fiennes and Angela Basset at her most bad ass. Cyberpunk noir thriller. Possibly the most 90s film I’ve ever seen. On paper this was my jam and I wasn’t disappointed, especially with the action and POV film making here. It’s nice for crowds to actually feel crowded, something you don’t see much now.

Dune 2021
Outstanding production design and music, it was a stunning experience to see Arrakis realized with such scale and perfection. Rebecca Ferguson also crushed it as Lady Jessica, I should really check out more of her films. I will say if you haven’t read the book, I’m not sure how much sense this would make and you certainly wouldn’t be able to keep track who everyone is and their motivations.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning 2023
The highs definitely didn’t hit that of Fallout and there were some parts I found a little tough to sit through, just so much dense exposition… it made it a little difficult to follow. Still some incredible action set pieces like always, tons of callbacks and such variety!
A little disappointed most of the crew was sidelined in favor of more Atwell, I do not think we needed to see quite so many minutes of chase scenes. Give me more mission planning and comedic relief. I’m still excited to see what they bring for part 2, particularly with the McGuffin sticking around for another film.
