Less a quasi-political soapbox movie than a genuinely political illustration of increasingly limited access to the soapbox. On the surface, the screenplay pushes some yawningly literal/liberal ideas about corporate ideology and regulatory capture, but this collection of Big Speeches is much more compellingly and cynically oriented around the idea of rhetorical capture. Caveh the intuitionist meets his match, and can't will him into submission. He seems almost angrily jealous when Will Oldham admits to being on speaking terms with the sun and moon.
Highly watchable, because I kept waiting for the detachment to fissure, or break. But there's a difference between restraint and withholding, and my sense here is that Coppola just didn't want to get her hands dirty. Deliberate, specific, drained of affect but not mood...still, the movie always reminds us that it's smarter than any person onscreen. The refusal of loud and declasse reality-show aesthetics doesn't pretend to offer clarity in its place, just knowingness.
