Although the final layer of reality was very short as a final plot twist sequence, it actually implies what is underneath, what is unsaid about the couple’s relationship. In any case this film is nothing like a Dostoevsky novel. Similar to what Bresson did in Pickpockets (a reinterpretation of crime and punishment)
In the sense that Dostoevsky is about radical love, which is not really about sexual desires as such. Here in the film it is still very much love in a vulgar sense. It is about FALLING in (and out of) love, not love in its totality.

In the film the monologue said: “For a moment we thought we owned the building forever”, which is a very valid point. This moment of radical imagination should not be trivialized as a daydream. If everyone stops paying rent tomorrow, we might really end up owning all buildings. A daydream as such will be actualized once it becomes collective.
