Needful Things 1993
This was so much fun. A delightfully hammy morality play full of simmering grudges stoked hilariously by the magnificent Max Von Sydow into a carnivalesque, explosive bloodbath. Great performances all around including Ed Harris whose stooge arcs gloriously into raving madness and as always the delightful Amanda Plummer soars.
I don't think you *need* to have worked a Christmas in retail to appreciate this apocalyptic takedown of materialism and greed but it (alongside a tolerance for the gruesome and a twisted sense of humour) would probably help.

All the Real Girls 2003
I was in exactly the right mood to see this. Some of the scenes felt a little disjointed from one to the next, which took some getting used to. As the movie went on though these interruptions to the flow felt like a good choice, with each scene depicting alternating characters standing a little way apart from each other, trying to respond honestly to each other and struggling or often missing completely. A painfully accurate and sincere (if imperfect) portrait of a particular, formative kind of love.

There Will Be Blood 2007
Perhaps the 4th/ 5th rewatch, and I'm blown away every single time.
Daniel Day Lewis's performance is exhilarating from the first moment to the last. The insane soundtrack is perfection. Alongside the key performers, soft expressions on the faces of minor characters are captured perfectly and glow uncertainly throughout this bleak masterpiece; perhaps in counterpoint to the furiosity that permeates every second of DDL time I find myself hyper-aware of those.
Brokenhearted men starved of comfort sit around a fire…
